Are we talking about playable choices, drivers, vehicle forms, which platform are we talking about, what?
Me, I go with actual playable choices on the character select. Over all the different platforms, this totals up to 29 actual playable choices. But that doesn’t mean that there are 29 playable choices in all platforms (in fact no single platform has all 29). Some drop down to the low 20′s, some instead have high 20′s.
Why is this? Well some platforms have characters that are unique to that platform. I’m not going to say which, that’s part of the fun of the reveals! Some are SEGA characters, some are not. Don’t bother asking :p - Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett

I thought they said 30, but this just blew my mind. They're going around saying 29 characters, but it's an overall thing.
And I forget if this includes the 3 bonus characters (that real girl, Wreck-It Ralph and someone else).
I remember that rumor from a while ago that Kirby was turned down by Nintendo (which seems silly for his anniversary).
I wouldn't get my hopes up for Mario characters. We could easily have it like last time, with Miis exclusive to Wii (and 3DS), Avatars on 360 and nothing on PS3. And maybe Banjo will return on 360.
In a perfect world, Link would be in the game. It wouldn't make much sense, but he is perfectly set to be in a racing game now, since he has a vehicle for all 3 terrains.
Train for ground.
Loftwing for air.
Boat (or Red Lions) for sea.
The only problem is that there's nothing that would transform the 3 of these things into each other. Specifically, the Loftwing. D:

Considering Mario Kart 7 has less than 20 characters, having low 20's is still more of a selection than that game.
I KNEW ever since they dropped Sega from Sega All Stars, that there would be 3rd party characters
And then Danicka Patrick was announced, followed by Ralph.
Ten bucks on Sony getting Sackboy.
The part that really interests me is when he says

What are some Sega games that are exclusive to Nintendo Platforms?

True, but i was still hoping the game would include the same number of characters the consoles would have. Well at least you're right the games roster should have more optional characters then Mario Kart 7.
As awesome as it would be to have Captain Falcon in the game wouldnt it make more sense to include Diddy Kong? Unless they add Cpt. Falcon in the Wii U version and Diddy Kong in the 3DS version though that seems unlikely.
I get the impression that Miis may not be available. I read a post from S0L that suggested he would have liked to see Miis/Avatars ride NiGHTS/Reala (this was in response to one fan's idea, instead of having the Nightopian/Nightmaren riders), but that there would have been "liscencing issues."
On the Nintendo side, I can think of no better character than Fox McCloud. He could have the land/sea/air thing covered with a modified Landmaster, Arwing, and Blue Marine sub.
After Danica Patrick was announced, all the logic on who will appear went through the sewers.
In any case, I'd love to see Mario, Captain Falcon, Diddy Kong and Kirby (I know Kirby won't happen, though, If that rumor circa the game's announcement is/was true) appearing in the Nintendo-systems versions.
Long as we get Ristar and Vectorman playable...

Hopefully Mario in the Wii U/3DS version, It will let us see Mario in HD as well
Sega didn't make Diddy Kong Racing, they did make F-Zero GX.
Im fully aware Sega didn't make Diddy Kong Racing but i only mentioned him as a guest since the game seems to have some nice inspiration from Diddy Kong Racing.
Mario would make the most sense, considering how buddy-buddy he and Sonic are these days.
i really hope not , mii characters should be enough , well they could add captain falco but no one from the mario kart series . It would be diluting the brand they actually worked hard to establish . Because yeah cod is not the only one that do rely on its mechanics to support its popularity , but obviously that's crazy talk it's just "look cute characters!"
I fear for the series , especially since nintendo totally sacrificed smash bros to namco for a pitiful main tekken games .
Sacrificed because some months after namco bandai is going to release their own with heavy cooperation with either ms or sony and/or a lot of third parties.
Hope the Wii U roster is good then...
