GameStop to offer $100 trade-in deal for 3DS towards 3DS XL

I was just out with at my local GameStop when a conversation about the 3DS XL came up. Turns out that GameStop will indeed have a special trade-in deal. The details weren't clear, but it sounds like you'll be able to trade in your 3DS and get $100 towards the purchase of a 3DS XL. The store employee said that the deal might only be available during launch weekend.

When asked if customers would be able to transfer their 3DS content to their 3DS XL in store, the employee said it shouldn't be a problem. This is going to be something that's more of a store-by-store basis. If you're friendly and the shop isn't too busy, you should be able to switch content over.

How will you be able to do a System Transfer if the store doesn't have free Wi-Fi access, though? System Transfer requires an Internet connection. It seems like everyone, even RMC and GameStop employees, are forgetting that...

Some people are certainly going to be pretty disappointed when they find out they're not going to be able to transfer their data like they had planned. People need to get the details right.

I'll be keeping my launch 3ds as I am a collector of handhelds. I'm sure it will get some use in the future when I want to trade Pokemon in the Ruby and Sapphire remakes!

Most Gamestops have Wifi, or have areas with Wifi close by.

I was going to take advantage of this deal until I read this:

I hope they decide to do what GAME is doing in some locations (I think it was game)
They will let you take your old 3DS home as they hold $100 and you have a week or so to return it and reclaim your money. As long as Gamestop gives me a way to transfer my content, they can have my old 3DS.

Oh really, so they are now? I wonder if I can get even more for it by selling it myself :)

I have a launch 3DS with original packaging (everything including AR cards) Plus a 3DS case and maybe some games to go with it. How much do you think i can get for it?

Not much for the case. Some games will get more then others. Take a look at how much used games are selling for and you'll get a 4th of that.

The 3DS will only net you $100 regardless if you have the full package.

That an awesome deal. Makes that upgrade more enticing eh? $100 isn't nearly as much of a guilty pleasure as $200.

$100 seems kinda low. Especially since they charge $150 for used 3DS's.

Packaging means nothing to GameStop. It's both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it's good because if you've lost the box the game has the same value when traded in. But, if you take good care of your stuff and give them all original packaging and they don't give you extra credit, it kinda blows. Oh well. That's why Amazon is better :D

For those of you looking to trade their 3ds in this is probably the best deal you are going to find. I just can't see myself paying $250 for something only to sell it for $100 a year later. I would rather just keep it.

Looks like I should probably go out of town to another Gamestop for this. The Gamestop in my hometown is pretty terrible, and they likely wouldn't let me transfer my data.

The guy at my GameStop said they'd know by the Wednesday so this makes sense timing wise. I think it's great. It saves me quite a bit of money. I hate my original 3DS. It creaks and feels super cheap even more so after playing on a Vita and DSi XL I just like the feel of those in my hands better.

To those who still have the launch 3ds, I think those will become collectible at one point since Nintendo began to make the 3ds's with somewhat cheaper materials after the price drop to $170. I'm fine with my 3ds so I may or may not be getting an xl at least for now...

I do know that original packaging does increase the value of any item, especially when sold on sites like Amazon or eBay. I sold my old GBC Pokemon games on Amazon several months ago and they each had original boxes and manuals. I sold them each for $50. Yep...others were getting like $20 to $30 but I got $50 for having the packaging. So yeah...packaging adds value to games and game systems.

Anyway, I'll bet you could sell it for $120 to $140 on Amazon depending on the system's condition.

This pisses me off that gamestop in the states gives $100, and gamestop in canada (ebgames) gives $60.. I would spend $40 in gas to drive from toronto to buffalo just to go to a god damn gamestop to get $100 for my 3ds. I preordered 2 new XL's one for me and one for my daughter, and they want to give me $120 total for 2 of the older 3ds's and I can just drive to the states and they will give me $200? this is fucking rediculous. I want to speak with the manager.
