Coming from the latest issue of Game Informer...
- dozens of levels across one world map, like Super Mario World
- map can be panned around and explored at any time
- game features an auto-scrolling, Boost Rush mode for more of a challenge
- multiple branching paths that let you pick which way to go
- this is much more than the tradition level choosing, which usually gives you only two paths to choose from
- Game Informer spotted 7 worlds: Acorn Plains, Sparkling Waters (tropical), Frosted Glacier, Layer Cake Desert (complete with melting desserts), areas similar to Forest of Illusion and Sky World and a world surround by a tornado
- mid-world fortresses guarded by Boom-Boom
- end-level castles guarded by Koopalings
- Super Acorn power-up makes you a flying squirrel
- Bowser kidnaps Peach once again
More screens here (thanks FourSwords!)

anybody else notice the second picture? The way mini mario us facing. I don't think he's jumping, I think he's running up the wall. I don't remember him looking like that when he jumped in the other NSMB games
@MoldyClay:
1) Yeah, we have to give them credit for making Bowser smaller in the story.
2) Because its SOOOO easy to make "new" bosses, right? And I like how you pretend to know how every battle will play out. Larry could be using a guitar that shoots cows and Lemmy could be a Lakitu throwing Mechakoopas, anything can happen.
3) "The reason it was exciting to have them back in NSMBW was because they had disappeared for years. Some people were excited about the return in NSMB2, but for the most part it was like "Oh, we just had you not that long ago" and with this it's "Wait, we JUST had you"."
So in other words, people only give a crap about things when they aren't seen, and then when they start reappearing, no one wants it anymore.
I wonder how people will react to Wario being in the next 3 2D/3D games.
4) "Nintendo's just riding on nostalgia"
No crap, I though pretty much everyone read "New Super Mario Bros." and took it as a modern look at the SMB series. Hell, that would actually make sense, we could actually call NSMB2 the modern Lost Levels but with easier difficulty.
And in case you weren't paying attention, the ways to defeat them =/= the boss battle. Are you going to say Roy's fight in NSMB2 is the same as Ludwig's fight in NSMB2?
5) "Nobody's ignoring the awesome parts."
So they're just blowing the "negative" parts out of proportion? Yeah, I expected that from the fanbase, actually.
Welcome to the internet my friend ^^
Other than that, I get it it's extremely tricky to find the good balance when developing a 2D mario game. Some people out there want novelty, and some others want tradition. The first category consists in specialists who post comments and reviews on the internet. They are passionate people but are so arrogant that they don't realise they represent nothing but a VERY small portion of the targetted audience. The other category is everyone else and they're looking for familiar elements and a proven formula. If you change too many elements in the game, they're not gonna buy it. Simple as that. And they're the one who give out tons of cash, not the first category. But still, the first category are the people who will eventually review your game, so they should be pleased as well.
Tricky indeed...
I personnaly thought NSMB2 was too similar to NSMBWii and decided I will buy it when it's cheaper. This game though looks like it's hitting the sweet spot between novelty and tradition. Just like NSMBWii did before, and I'm still playing that brilliant game.
I absolutely detest tiny Mario. I hate how he controls, I hate how hes played in like 2 levels but randomly other levels require the power up you have to acquire in other levels by getting it and then beating the level with it. It and giant Mario are trash power ups, how can they not bring back the cape? How can they just flat out not copy Super Mario World?
What kind of game you're looking/playing?
1) There was never a problem with having to get Mini Mario to get secret. Maybe you're not hitting any blocks at all.
2) Mega Mario's trash? Just lol there.
3) What the hell do you think the Flying Squirrel power-up is? Superball Mario?
4) Yeah, there's obviously no SMW influence here at all! Except for, Yoshi, Baby Yoshi, food themed worlds, one giant overworld, actually named worlds, and general artstyle!
Game just seems better and better. :3 And I love that the Koopalings are back again, but I really hope their battles are a little better...
Also, Mini Mario can run on (certain?) walls now? Awesome~
More hyped for this than I was for NSMB2, but I'm not expecting anything super exciting. Especially with the return of the same ol' bosses.
I like how that one guy is shovel on everyone's opinion.
I for one would like to see Nintendo get creative with the things they already have, since people seem to have them critically acclaimed for their creativity. Yet, it hasn't shown in the longest.
You really aren't paying attention, are you?
Yeah, turning a mode where you place blocks to help players in levels to a mode where you speedrun through every level autoscrolling wise, and making Baby Yoshis useful isn't "creative" with what they got.
Ugh.
They didn't change that. Boost Mode is a separate mode altogether. Pretty sure that function still exists in the game.
@MoldyClay
They're his kids and so they're kind of important characters within the 2D Mario series so get used to seeing them. I like them so it doesn't bother me in the slightest, but then again, i'm one of those guys who doesn't look for reasons to complain, whine, b!tch, piss, moan etc. either so yeah.
So the "cool thing" to do now is to b*tch about how the Koopalings are back again? First it was how this game "looked the same" when it clearly doesn't and now people are complaining about the return of a group of bosses that are actually cool? Give me a freaking break.
Downloadable game at best.
"Bowser kidnaps Peach once again"
Spoilers!
You are guys are ridiculous. OMG the game has a nice overworld and the backgrounds look like SMW BEST GAME EVAR!!1! Not like the level design matters! Just for giggles, someday I want Nintendo to release a terrible 2D Mario like NSMB DS, but with even more baby levels and even more broken items, but with SMW art style and overworld map, and I will watch all you people go on about how amazing it is and I will laugh at these so called "gamers"!
How are they being ridiculous? Maybe they already assume Nintendo is going to be making sure the game has good level design anyway, so there's no need to worry about it. The company's never really released games with bad level design in the past.
And the levels in NSMB are no easier than in older Mario games. You get more lives and power ups sure, but the designs themselves are much harder to much of an extent. Do people ever realise how easy SMW was? How flat and empty most of the levels were?
Also, as for the Koopalings and being unique, that's a point. No Mario game with them in history has had them all act identical to how they did in the past game. Compare/contrast:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_4x5DssEQE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR7HiPTP-B4
And as fan games and hacks point out, you can do a lot with them. This game uses all Koopalings, but gives them an interesting gimmick each:

As does this one:

and hell, you could even do something crazy with them like this:

the Koopalings are no more limited than having new bosses really.
No, I'm referring to how everyone trashes NSMBWii for having bland presentation even though imo it's the best 2D Mario game to date (second best Mario game after Galaxy 2). Their reactions to utterly superficial and secondary element like the SMW-styled backdrops and design of world map just prove that most gamer value style over substance. That is why it would be funny if Nintendo release a terrible 2D Mario but with nice presentation and how everyone will say it is better game than NSMBWii and how it is full of "charm" and "heart".
As for easiness, I agree that World was pretty easy and only reason NSMB might feel easier is because Nintendo was too generous with 1-up and items. And as much as I like World, I don't think it is as good as SMB3 and I feel that NSMBWii is basically SMB3 on steroids so! World had good level design, but there were quite a few average stages. But NSMB DS was terrible, no defending that game!
Damn, kid, you are the definition of missing the point. Can you type again when your brain isn't detached from its skull?
Let me show you why so many people are loving NSMBU.
1) The overworld is finally one giant one again, which gives players a sense of connection in the land. We don't want detached worlds, we want to see the world as one giant adventure, instead of 6/8 separate ones. Not to mention how we got some new themes, like, let's see, Layer Cake Desert?
2) The art in this game is fucking beautiful, more better than NSMBW, and you're grasping at straws if you think otherwise.
3) Heavy SMW inspiration means less SMB3 reference crap. I'm sick of seeing Raccoon and Tanooki Mario and the Super Leaf, give me a freaking Super Acorn.
I'm also pondering what the hell you're spouting when you're saying "Its not like the level design matters!" What so if we don't talk about something we don't know, we don't care about it? Crap logic is crap.
"Their reactions to utterly superficial and secondary element like the SMW-styled backdrops and design of world map"
Yes, having a unified overworld map with tens of secrets, hidden paths, and branching areas is superficial. Yeah, OK, kid.
"I agree that World was pretty easy and only reason NSMB might feel easier is because Nintendo was too generous with 1-up"
Hey look, another kid who thinks lives = difficulty!
^ Exactly.
I still really hope that the Koopalings Battles will be a little more advanced and/or longer. And I also hope there's still at least one completely new Powerup in this game. NSMBW had... 3? Propeller, Ice and Penguin, right?
@DonnyKD
Wow, you're pretty angry!
1. Oh man, we get one big adventure! I don't play games for adventure, I play games for their actual levels and my sense of adventure comes from if the levels are well-designed, not by staring at the overworld. It certainly helps, but it is purely secondary compared to the actual levels. But yeah, OHMAN SMW OVERWORLD GOTYAY!!!1!
2. Yeah okay, where did I say otherwise?
3. Yes I am also happy they are directly referring SMW (though I will be impressed when they actively reference multiple games including spin-offs), but I'm not going to slam $60+ on pre-prder or about to say stuff like "what NSMBWii should have been!" or "best Mario game in a long time!" or "Sigh Nintendo will never beat themself" UNTIL I see (and later, play) some actual levels. Yeah, it's nice for one connected overworld, but that is icing on the cake. Or are you one of those people who spend $60 to stare at the overworld?
Yes, finding some paths and whatnot on the overworld map give me a SUPERFICIAL sense of discovery. It doesn't impact the actual levels in any way. As I said, icing on the cake.
And it seem like my posts went entirely over your head, save a couple parts that you decided to pick on and take out of context because of your need to defend the crap out of NSMB.
Let's see what I said:
"As for easiness[...]only reason NSMB MIGHT FEEL easier is because Nintendo was too generous with 1-up and items."
See, I didn't say lives=difficulty, I said OTHER people who suck at games might feel that because they don't see a game over screen every 5 deaths.
For a guy who thinks he is intelligent and mature adult, you are pretty childish for you age! Also, reported for being obnoxious. Only reply once you properly read my posts and calm down.
Can you even do that? 'Cause if so, I should be flagging everyone but a handful of people if I wanted to...
No but seriously, frivolous flagging is wrong.
i been reading the posts and this guy is sh*tting on everyones opinions let right and centre. i'm afraid to post something should he tear my face off like a raging ape.
@DeAngelo Guillory
"Can you type again when your brain isn't detached from its skull?"
And that's just in response to me. He's said a lot more in this article and others.
@jesse himself
I know right? He's freakin psycho!
So much unneeded arguments. Let's just all agree that I'm the only one that's right. :3
In all seriousness though... the Koopalings have been confirmed, right? So, are there any screens of them? Or do we just have that info?
CALLED IT
