Coming from Two Tribes' Twitter...
It's amazing how small and toy-like the old Wii U Gamepads - the ones with the slide pads - feel when you're used to the final controller. Our older development kits still use those controllers. The new ones come with, what we assume is, the final hardware. We are glad Nintendo listened and changed the design. The resulting controller is much better suited for long game sessions.
I wonder why Nintendo switched from Circle Pads to traditional sticks. I'm glad they did, but I'm trying to figure out what the tipping point was.

They still have older dev kits? I wonder if they'll get new ones soon
I think the tipping point was click-sticks. Can't really do that with circle pads, since they're flat against the surface.
THEY SAID THE GAMEPAD WAS A TOY!!! I HATE THEM SO MUCH NOW!!!!!!
be cool think they were referring to the older model not in general. And the weight and feel not as an insult. :/
I remember Mr. Iwata saying that Nintendo realizes that "circle pads are best suited for handheld devices" during their Nintendo Direct before E3 2012.
We'll never really know, but I have no idea what he could possibly be calling more toy like about the old design.
I've used circle pads, so I know what those feel like.
Grow up. How does that comment even effect you?
I think its more than just the slider pads though. The back of the old gamepads were almost completely flat.
You guys need to fix your sarcasm detectors.
I know Niotnedo was being sued for the thumbsticks on GC, and Classic Controllers. But they won that case a year or so ago. That could be why they went the slide pad route. In case they lost the analog stick case. But once they won they were able to redesign the Gamepad and safely include thumbsticks again. Just a guess really.

I think E3 2011 and the aftermath was the tipping point, not just for the Wii U, but their digital services, their stance on localizing games, their controller design, their online, and many MANY other subjects. The failed excitement for the Wii U from developers and gaming media, the fact the expanded audience couldn't distinguish the system from previous ones, and the fact that so many people wrote in to them with concerns all played a major factor.
When people first got hands on with the Wii, they saw nothing but smiles on peoples faces but when people got hands on with the Wii U, it was very mixed and lukewarm. You know for a fact, they're going to take the criticism to heart and make the changes needed.
Would have loved to tryout the older GamePad to see how it felt to me.
The replies to your comment………LOL. Such FOOLS!
