Pachter says Nintendo's comment on 3DS software sales doesn't show full picture

Nintendo just put out a press releasing touting an 89% increase in 3DS software sales. Pachter took to Twitter to offer up his take.

Nintendo press release says 3DS software up 89% in Sept, with no mention that combined 3DS/DS software was down 18%. That's NOT a good trend

Isn't that kind of expected? 3DS software sales rise as DS software sales drop. I guess I'm not looking at things correctly?

The DS hardly has any new software, when you realize that you also realize that the 3DS is doing a great job picking up the slack with an install base 1/7th the size.

I'm on the same page as a few other people. Essentially the overall handheld market for Nintendo is down, while on the other hand the 3DS market is up. This is due to a heavy decrease in the DS market. So he's right. It's a basic idea of making something seem better than it actually is by expressing the good and excluding the bad.

Meanwhile, PS2 games sales are dragging down the PS3

I mean, not to defend Pachter...but that is a little worrisome. DS software sales were so high last year that 3DS software can nearly double and STILL not increase year-over-year? I don't recall DS software being that high last year.

But....that's not the case. The DS market results are irrelevant, because the DS is a legacy platform. Of course sales for that are going to be down. If 3DS sales were down AND DS sales were down, then we'd have a serious problem. As-is right now? No. This is to be expected.

Pachter does not want Nintendo to succeed does he?

RMC clearly read it wrong. Pachter is a certified "super-analyst", therefore is always right.

Nintendo want those purchasing the DS, to instead buy the 3DS. Of course DS software and hardware sales will suffer as time goes on, the DS can't last forever. They also want people to eventually transition from DS to 3DS, and that is obviously happening right now. Granted, it's not happening nearly as quickly as it did in Japan, as DS hardware sales still have a noteworthy presence in the US. 3DS and DS aren't going to grow together, one was made to replace the other. That's just common sense.

@GiriOni

Of course overall handheld sales are gonna be down with the DS on its way out. The 3DS isn't going to immediately replicate DS software sales, and Nintendo doesn't need to worry so hard about beating DS software numbers. As time goes on, and 3DS establishes itself further in the market and key titles are released, software sales will naturally improve. This isn't a big issue. Are we going to bring up every time software numbers fail to surpass records set in the past? There'd be no end if we did. The story here is that 3DS is on the up in the US, that is what matters most.

Uhm.. What new DS software came out in the US in September....?

Something is wrong with Patcher. Seriously.

Well, obviously. The DS is basically dead, of course the sales are going to go down from now on considering how few good games will be released for it.

In other news NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Gameboy, and Gameboy Advance sales are all down 100%. Nintendo is doomed!!!!!!

My god Pachter is such a douchebag. Was it really necessary to run to twitter to spout off about this? The 3DS is not the same as a DS, so why would he feel the need to lump them in together? I bet he won't lump them together next month, when the huge Pokemon sales are in. No he'll forget all about the DS then.

Guys, he's right. If you combine 3DS sales with SNES sales, those also drop overall.

I think this shows the the picture just fine tbh. 3DS has been out about a year and a half and sales have picked up drastically where as the DS has slowed down drastically as its successor has been on the market for a while now.

WOOOOOOOW he is using data for a "discontinued" handheld?

Congratulations Pachter :)

Common sense. It seems to be lacking here.

Pokémon, Pokémon, Pokémon!

Also, around this time (in a consoles life) is where Sony in the past (with the PS1 and PS2) made a KILLING off their aged console.

While I don't agree with lumping them together, at least his statement makes sense. I mean, there are still new games coming out for the DS (specifically, Pokémon), and there will be for at least another 2 years.

Also, some of you guys should read the story before you mark everything down...
