Yes, pretty much all gaming headsets with the standard 3.5mm jack should work.

I haven't tested it out myself, but it might. There was a video posted on launch day of a guy who just plugged in some ear buds and he thought he was able to get the Gamepad mic to work for voice chat but later he realized that there was a small mic on his ear buds.
Here's the comment on his channel as soon as he found out the sound wasn't coming from the Gamepad mic:
I made a mistake... I wish Nintendo would have just made this more clear. The wiiu supports headphones and earbuds with that have built in mics. But the audio doesn't come from the gamepad itself. I didn't realize that my earbuds and headphones had a built in mic. This is still good news because unlike what was reported it doesn't have to be a bulky expensive headset. It can be cheap earbuds that have built in mics. I have seen them on the net for less than 4 dollars.
Just finished the tutorial with our youngest, and this game is very impressive for a digital title. The graphics/art style are absolutely, incredibly, well done. Vibrant colors, effects...online play? Yes. Now adding voice chat after launch? Yes!
What has Nintendo been doing.......NSMBU...NOW WITH LOCAL MULTIPLAYER, again.
*Not saying I'm not looking forward to NSMBU, but when I see these type of games from small developers that have local and online co-op, it really makes me wonder why Nintendo hasn't gotten online multiplayer for a Mario platforming title yet, in SOME fashion.
The mic in the controller is okay but not amazing. I think the problem is that they need the extra speakers to get the clarity of your voice across, either that or you risk having to play the game with the music low and where is the fun in that. We've been using the chat feature as my partner and I don't live together. You can draw on each other which is pretty fun and if you're learning an alphabet it's fantastic for testing each other, but the mic isn't great. In fact we've been having skype on at the same time and having fun with the constant echoes between me, the pc and his controller on the other side, plus the 2 tele's. Very very ...sad... fun.
I'll happily use it as an excuse to go look up headsets ...right now!

I THINK you need the licensed ones for voice chat.

I wonder why they can't use the built in mic, it seems so odd.
That game is gorgeous.
