RUMOR - Wii U demo kiosks running Ubuntu

Taken from a Best Buy demo kiosk, it seems like the Wii U unit may actually be for display, with a PC running underneath. Wouldn't that be an interesting find?! I bet Nintendo won't even discuss it. Thanks to Microtic for the heads up!

That would explain the demo selection...

Why would there need to be a PC underneath? ... it's not unheard of for consoles to run other OS's

If there is a PC running underneath, isn't that sort of deceptive to the consumer? I can understand doing that before a console's specs are final for a trade show like E3, but inside a retail store? For shame, Nintendo (assuming this is true).

Then how exactly are they capable of running the rayman legends demo with full game pad functionality considering it's a game built from the ground up for the wiiU?

To build a computer that would run Wii U games would actually be very difficult, because of the generally strange and varied architectures consoles use (to which the Wii U is no exception). It's more likely that the display Wii U's load Ubuntu rather than the regular OS. Kind of like how homebrewers can put Linux on their Wii if they want to, except Nintendo themselves is doing it.

I've looked underneath one of the kiosks myself (it wasn't locked), and all I saw was an external hard-drive. No computer to speak of.

Isn't this one of the reasons it's so hard to emulate the PS2?

There's 2 types of Wii demo kiosks. The basic type can only be updated with new demos by USB stick or a disc inserted into the Wii. The more advanced ones have an actual computer in the unit hooked up to the store's WiFi that's able to download demos directly from Nintendo and transfer them to the Wii U. What we have here is one of the latter ones.

8) Interesting, let's wait until another pic comes out so that we make sure this isn't just a regular PC plugged to the LCD ...

Yet, I want to believe that this is real and that somehow Nintendo is using Ubuntu for something game related. Not that I believe WiiU nor the Gamepad use Ubuntu as the OS, but that this specific demo units work (somehow) with Ubuntu ... at least I can dream about it, right ? :P

If you look into the system's legal contract, you will notice that the system is based off of Linux/Android. Ubuntu is an extension of Linux iirc so... yeah
