Pachter - Wii U software sales 'abysmal'

The following comes from Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter...

- says Wii U software sales came in $50 million below expectations
- slow software sales for DS and 3DS as well
- Wii U software sales "were abysmal, only Super Mario sold any meaningful units."
- "Wii U hardware was sold out, we checked, so it's a supply issue."

Well since most of the game were also digital downloads, how do we know more people did'nt opted for digital buys over retail? I'm pretty sure that Pachter doesn't have Nintendo's downloadable sales numbers, so how can he possibly know what's selling, or not. Sure retail sales could be lower than expected, but online sales could be more than expected.

Hey... Why does everyone always bash Mexican food. I have it every day without a problem. And I have IBS...

Anyway, on topic... I don't think the sales are that bad. Seeing as some already had a game included with the system. And some games are downloadable.

Game:
Analysts Vs. Shareholders Vs. Developers Melee [DLC Eternal Edition]

Description:
A RTS game with limited action and very little puzzle solving in which players choose to side with one of three bizarre alien races.

The Shareholders:
A race of sneaky, swaggering buffoons. High strength, but low integrity. Ability to convert $$ into HP.

The Analysts:
A shape-shifting race of opportunistic shills. Their guns have unlimited ammo, but they shoot blanks 99% of the time.

The Developers:
A race of mysterious hermits rumored to possess advanced technology. High intellect, high endurance, and high integrity – but they are the size of Mini-Marios, with hands permanently tied behind their backs, and magical muzzles that only allow them to tell the truth to other Developers.

Pachter reminds me of the stock market scene from The Dark Knight Rises.

"Wayne coming back is change. Change is either good or bad. I vote bad."
"On what basis?"
"I flipped a coin."

Worst part of all of this is that in the same article, one analyst gives an all around blame for the game sales decline while Pachter is pointing fingers solely at Nintendo.

This is to be expected, he's being paid big bucks by GameTrailers.com, a site that use to be unbiased about 5 years ago but is pretty much now a Bros gaming site now. And what better way to satisfy these Mountain Dew drinking, Doritos eating ass-holes than to take a stab at Nintendo -_-

Someone tell me which of those 4 things listed were wrong, how so, and then give me a reason this has -22 votes other than "HE DOESN'T PRAISE NINTENDO, BAW".

But okay.

So because everything he says is wrong
- Wii u Software came in $50 million over expectations
- DS and 3DS software sales were better than expected
- Wii U software sales were amazing

Of course software sales are going to be abysmal compared to 360/PS3. Wii U in the US has an install base of less than a million. Pachter is a sensationalist that likes to spin everything into a negative and make things seem worse than they are. And what he predicts, usually the opposite comes true. Truly the anti-Nostradamus of gaming, this man.

Did he say compared to PS360? I really don't think he's that stupid, I'm pretty sure he means the general attatchment rate of software.

This exactly.

Although I would actually agree with one thing the guys said: the fact that he uses the term abysmal implies a negative connotation which is dumb since the console has just been released and of course, third party sales are going to be low since they are ports and competing with a 2D mario.

So the use of the term abysmal is classic Pachter being dumb and adding fuel to the fire.

But other than that, I don't see any problem with what he said.

But I guess negative and Patcher makes for a much more clickable thing. Oh well.

Exactly. People on here constantly complain about Pachter and GoNintendo giving him publicity and whatnot. But if you notice, every Pachter article that gets posted on here generates a minimum of 20 replies, and usually much higher.

According to the article:

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter deemed the November sales results -- a record 12 months of declines -- as "worse than I expected." The culprit, he says, was Wii U software sales, which came in about $50 million below expected........

So Wii U sales didn't meet what Pachter expected. Is that Nintendo's fault or possibly the fault of Pachter being not as good an analyst as he thinks he is???

The article never stated what statistics Pachter used to base his expectations on and I'd love to know his reasoning for software sales predictions on the Wii U.

This guy's job is to do this. Clearly. He is paid to give a negative view of Nintendo. Why does he get so much press?

Is there no other analysts out there? Just this one guy we have to stomach? Really? Its all a scam, paid for by whoever benefits from a negative outlook for japanese gaming...

Hmmmmmm.....

Wow, now we're going to engineer negative words to not MEAN negative things! Very Orwellian. Is that how teachers teach these days in school? Take something and don't accept the face value of it, just take it to mean whatever you want?

2+2=5.

I think we should have a sliding meter of Nintendo doomedness. Perhaps by using Pokemon as an example. Highest point is Arceus, lowest point is Magikarp. What pokemon is Nintendo?

No matter who is right, the thing is, since the 3DS launch, it seems to me that Nintendo has started spacing out their releases more widely, perhaps to try helping 3rd parties to sell more. IMHO that has been backfiring on them. They should forget about 3rd parties. Nintendo alone was responsible for the the DS and Wii success. 3rd parties can bring more variety yes, but Nintendo is now killing their own consoles (3DS and WiiU) with the lack of 1st party support. 3DS for example had a abysmal lineup this holiday. Paper Mario and Professor Layton, no matter how much I like them, are not system sellers. Same with Wii U, the closest of a system seller is NSMU, and even that isn't exactly a killer app in most gamers mind. They also need to come up with new franchises. Last gen hits aren't exactly franchises as they don't seem to work beyond the originals. Case in point, Nintendogs, mediocre sales on the 3DS. And wait until we get Wii Fit U, it is going to be the same, a fraction of the original sales. So they need to put their shovel together, start releasing games more consistently, create new stuff that isn't a fad.

Excuse me but you don't make sense.

I never said such things, I just said abysmal is a negative term, and even if it is true that sales are low this far, it's 100% normal if you just consider the fact that it's been out for a couple of weeks and the fact that third parties are going against a 2D Mario with ports, and also the fact that people never buy more than 1 or maybe 2 games at a system launch. So the use of such a negative word is inapropriate. It can't be a negative thing since it's just something that has to be expected. If you use a negative word you make it sound like it's not a normal phenomenon and if you're an analyst that is supposed to have some kind of credibility, then it is a problem whatever you think. Because you're supposed to provide people with actual information, not with misleading terms that don't even reflect reality.

And please, leave teachers out of this. Believe me it's hard enough to be a teacher these days. People just have a curious and disturbing tendency to blame you for all of the evil in the world and it becomes sort of annoying after a while.
