I've been wanting this for years! I feel like Nintendo could be a much better steward of Sega than Sammy. Wonder if there'd be a better chance of pulling some of the old Sega developers back into the fold as well... Imagine Miyamoto and Yuji Naka or Yu Suzuki working on a game together! Granted, it may not work out having two big name developers working together on a single project... but imagine what they could do together.

I've been saying that Nintendo should buy Sega ever since Sega's restructuring. I think it would be great for both companies. With Nintendo's watchful eye, we would have consistently good Sonic games. Not to mention that Nintendo would have a monopoly on a good chunk of video gaming's most revered IPs. I don't know HipHopGamer enough to know how reliable his information is. I guess we'll have to just wait it out, but it sure would be interesting if it did happen.

Omg yes! If Nintendo buys Sega, this could be a VERY good deal! So much good IP!

There's nothing I'd rather see happen in this industry than the joining of my favorite game company and my former second favorite game company. They have a lot of great IP that would fit in just perfectly at Nintendo.

I doubt Sammy would sell even if Nintendo wanted to buy. Man, they sure botched the handling of that company.

Sega Namco would have probably been pretty good too...

this would be cool. We could finally see Guardian Heroes, Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, Virtual On, Virtua Fighter and other non-Nintendo console franchises show up on Nintendo consoles.

But it doesnt seem realistic, at all.

This would be a dream come true. Too bad it's probably BS... :-(

The quote - if said as he said it - is political fluff for, "We maybe tried to buy them out once, but they're asking for way too much."

In other words, won't be happening.

I was just discussing this with a friend. I really think that it could happen.

He would have talked to NoA reps who know jack shovel about these kinds of things and are the masters of coming up with neutral responses that mean nothing.

Nintendo MIGHT do it one day, if Sega goes bust and they can buy them out for a low price, or at least buy some of there IP's, but I don't think that time is now.

I would support this move, but I don't buy it.

...No one remembers the HipHopGamer that posted irrelevant Sony fanboy bullshit on Nintendo-related articles? He's just spewing more bullshit as usual.

Nothing personal but how would this guy know anything about such a topic?

I don't buy the rumor but I do give it a bit of credibility in the fact I do believe Nintendo is aiming to get a stranglehold of the Japanese market and purchasing Sega would give them access to a lot of valuable IPs that are relevant both in Japan and outside of it.

Also the Sega brand could be their version of Buena Vista. What I mean is Disney uses Buena Vista when they want to put out something more mature and not Disney like. Nintendo could do the same with Sega if they ever decided they wanted to develop a mature titles. Nintendo makes a mature game and publishes as Sega so they protect the Nintendo brand but still put it under a brand that is know and familiar to a lot of gamers.

I have big doubts about the reliability of this source.

With that said, Nintendo buying Sega makes a ton of sense, and is something I've wanted to see happen for years. As mentioned Sega has dozens of great IP's, and many of their games are a perfect fit for Nintendo systems as we've seen in the past. Nintendo and Sega are both known for unique games with big personality, they'd be a good match. Also, Nintendo is looking to cater to more hardcore gamers as well, and Sega's IP's would definitely help a lot in the matter. Keeping the Sega name (and publishing all the mature content under that label) would also eliminate the problem I've been sensing of Nintendo balancing between staying family-friendly and at the same time looking to have/publish more mature content on their systems. Sega also has a tremendous backlog of classic games, which would be a perfect match for Nintendo Virtual Console now that they're reinventing the whole system, and would be a big selling point if they were exclusive to Nintendo. I'm not at all sure Nintendo needs Sammy though, so if they can acquire Sega without Sammy I say get the deal done! It only makes sense for everyone.

Just to get this out there for anyone who doesn't know who HHG is or why we should believe anything he says, he has revealed news before any big sites. It was him that revealed Kratos was in Mortal Kombat, or that Sony was making PlayStation All-Stars, the Halo 1 HD remake and he was dropping hints about the Wii U before it was officially revealed.

At one point he did have an account on GoNintendo, but I remember people being rude to him. What I don't remember was whether or not he did or said anything to deserve it. He definitely came off as a Sony fanboy though, so that was probably it. If you watch his videos now though he gives credit where it is due as far as Wii U and defending ZombiU in all the hate it gets from critics.

CC, thanks for the insight. It is sad that people would treat him wrong just because he had a preference to another console over another.

That being said, and to add to your first statement: HHG is actually well respected in the gaming industry. Plus, he is a genuinely nice guy who cares about all video games. This is the type of person whom should be celebrated in the community, but instead you get people saying really negative things about him. That is the sad and ugly side of gaming that makes me want to throw up.

Even if HHG's info turns out to be nothing more than a wish, it is still an interesting discussion. He brings up some valid points about how it will turn out as a win for Nintendo, which I never took into consideration. I would love to see Nintendo bring Sonic in-house.

Nintendo passed up the chance to buy Sega in 2004, because they didn't want to pay $3B+ to get them (Sega was head over heels in debt).

So it was down to Microsoft and Sammy to buy Sega.
Thankfully Sammy won out for being Japanese and Microsoft went home with tears.

If anything Microsoft will be the one to buy a major Japanese developer before Nintendo.

@ *referring to bold*

Yeah, it's best that we get 'all' points of view from all sides. We can't just leave out pieces of the puzzle with all this negativity and hate.

I don't know if I would say "thankfully." Sammy has done nothing but harm the company from a creativy standpoint. A Microsoft acquisition could have been just as bad, if Rareware is any indication, but you never know. It could have also been a mutually beneficial decision, and Microsoft couldn't have done a worse job than Sammy on preserving Sega IP. I'm willing to bet they would have taken better care of the Sonic franchise, for sure, and would probably have taken more risks overall.

It turns out the Sega division is current one of the only things operating at a profit at Sega Sammy Holdings, so that is why I doubt they would ever let them go.
