See, Nintendo is more hardcore than you believe.
People like to blow this one out of proportion, like Nintendo was supporting prostitution or something, but in Japan everybody lives in close proximity with fairly thin walls. Places like these were good for when you didn't want the neighbors or kids hearing your marital activities.
Gotta pay the bills somehow.

Hahahaha!!! Man, nothing says "we're making babies" quite like a plump plumber wearing overalls and red clothes who can't seem to get into a serious relationship with his woman, whom he has saved a trillion times from an impending doom!
I still crack up every time one of those young or elderly ladies lets you in their house!
