Looks like Apple has no problem using Nintendo-style designs to advertise their games. As you can see above, the background being used is clearly influenced by Donkey Kong. Perfect way to showcase all the rip-off apps available! Thanks to
Compc for the heads up!
Oh haaaale naw.
I doubt there are any rip-off apps displayed there. The apps in these kind of category display fields are usually hand picked by Apple. In fact, I think it's Matt Casamassina's job now with Apple to make selections for these displays (which may be why there is some retro Donkey Kong homage being shown there). I have no problem with it. If it was an Atari theme (like Space Invaders), would anyone be griping? I for one am happy it's a Nintendo classic getting some display there, it's at least relevant to gaming (which was the whole point).
Nintendo sues = apple dies.
They would have to be showcasing games in order to sue. Not weak touch control hack time wasters.
I personally think Apple is ruining gaming by allowing all this junky, shovelware, throw-away style gaming to become so popular. I think it's ruining the value of the gaming entertainment and improperly displaying what video gaming really is by having so many poor games available. I think in the long run it's going to turn people off of games more than anything else, kind of like when Atari let the same thing happen years back.
But otherwise, I don't really care too much about the DK inspired game page on iOS.
@marsbarrow
Does the barrage of lousy movies every year turn people off of movies?
Does the barrage of lousy books every year turn people off of books?
Does the barrage of lousy television shows every year turn people off of television?
And why don't people take issue with the PC and Windows and Android and web-based Flash? There are plenty (more than anyone can count) of " junky, shovelware, throw-away style" games released on the PC, Android, Windows and on the internet and no one seems to be crying that those games are "ruining the value of the gaming entertainment" and "improperly displaying what video gaming really is."
Nobody is claiming that these lousy movies, books, or television shows will murder and replace the quality work in their respective mediums due to the convenience of everybody owning a pocket film projector or the cheap prices of said disgustingly lousy items. That's the difference here, I think. The same goes for flash games. Flash games are generally higher quality than smart phone apps, but again nobody is out there saying that Steam has to/is going to die because you can play flash games for cheap or free.
First of all they're paying homage to Nintendo by referencing Donkey Kong. Second I have been a devout Nintendo fan since the 80's and still am today but unlike most of you I actually enjoy iOS games. They are in no way "destroying the industry".
There have been some very unique concepts developed that Nintendo could have never though of. But,alas there are those that can't adapt to changing times. Citing touch controls as the main problem which I personally have no issue with. Oh well.
You guys realize who is in charge at games for iOS for the App Store right? Head man is Matt Cassamassina, the Nintendo (and best) IGN Nintendo Guru and alongside him Mark Bozon (WayForward's brother AND IGN Nintendo editor). Also those that have been round long enough to remember Corey Lewis from IGN Nintendo is over there as well doing games for iOS app store. They are big Nintendo fans and it's sad to see great talent working on mobile platforms but if you understand who is behind the curtain it makes more sense.
