GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Does Pokemon X/Y tickle your fancy?

A big step for the Pokemon series! Quite a way to start a morning, or in my case, end your day! You guys chat it up about Pokemon X/Y while I slip off to bed. See you in a few, short hours!

Direct link here

Many of us were hoping that the next evolution of the main Pokemon series would be announced. I guess our fingers were crossed tight enough, as Pokemon X/Y are indeed that evolution! The series jumps from colored names to lettered names, bringing Pokemon into a brand-new dimension of fun.

Nintendo's 10-minute Nintendo Direct was a tease most of the time, bringing us through the history of the main Pokemon series. The wait seemed agonizing, but eventually the presentation paid off with a debut in-game trailer for Pokemon X/Y. As mentioned above, the biggest evolution that we see in this trailer is the jump of the series into full 3D.

Right up there with that announcement is the fact that Pokemon X/Y is going to have a simultaneous worldwide launch. North America, Europe, Japan...we're all getting the game in October 2013. We may not have it the same day as one another, but October will indeed be launch month worldwide. Talk about a major localization effort unlike any Nintendo has taken on before!

Who knew that a 10 minute presentation could be so exciting?! At least, I hope that's the feeling you're experiencing after this Nintendo Direct. Leave a comment and let us know what you think! Did you like what you saw? Are you pumped for Oct. 2013? Are you already counting down the days?

I dunno is it the art style, the camera angle, the animations or just the graphics themselves but the game looks horrendous. It looks like they took a DS game and pulled the camera down and behind the character.

Yes they all have stories. Some even tie into each another. They stories are all very simular in plot however normally involving an "Evil Team", some sort of natural/unnatural force and you being "The only one" that can stop them.
Black and White mixed it up a little bit. But few if any play Pokemon for the Story. I personally enjoy the Social aspects of the games.

Also Monster Hunter has a story too...just no one plays them.

I know so many gamers who have been waiting for a FULL 3D Pokémon title to finally become available. This will surely boost 3DS sales later this year (and along the way to the release date of these games).

Personally, the last game that I played was White. I didn't really get too much into White 2/ Black 2. I have a feeling that this next gen will be very satisfying for Pokémon fans. :)

You know, I actually feel really positive about this, and I'm the guy who's always predicting calamity for the franchise. A quality 3D Pokemon game is WELL overdue. But you know what actually has me excited about it? Little things you see in the trailer that seem to indicate that they're finally breaking the mold on some tropes they should have done away with a long time ago.

However, it looks like they might have you still locked to running around on a grid, but I can't tell. I've long wished they would let you move freely and diagonally, like in Chrono Trigger.

And it looks like you guys have a good argument going over the addition of new Pokemon. In all honesty, I wish they would scrap most of them and start over with a new batch, just keeping a few of the favorite old ones. To me, the problem with having too many Pokemon is that for those who are trying to catch them all, it becomes absolutely daunting. I think it would be nice if they just made about 150 new Pokemon, included 50 of the old favorites, and let the rest fade away.

Well lets start with the positives:
If the Y pokemon is that bird thing, I must say it looks bad ass (talking lugia level here).
The sprites are dead! (3D aggron here I come).
Gamefreak finally decided to help build their own home.

Negatives:
I still get a really heavy gen 5 graphics dejavu from this game even though it looks so different.
I know this has been hammered in, but the starters are really starting to look dumb.

I'll be picking this up day one just because I can finally get my 3d battles and adventure in the same game.

This looks amazing! The graphics look fantastic, the new additions already seem better than the ones from last gen (the legendaries in particular), and it looks like they're really switching things up, continuing what they started with Black/White2. Looks like there's another Route 3, which means this is another completely new region (if Unova was the USA, I'm guessing this is France or Europe based on that trailer). And launch in all countries at the same time? That's great! Also, maybe it's just because I associate X and Y not with dimensions but with chromosomes, but does anyone else get a Fallopian tubes vibe from the deer's antlers?

@Hawk
They kind of did that with Black and White, but then people complained and they put more of the originals into Black and White 2. I'd also argue that your idea is one of the worst things I've ever heard, because it does nobody any favors except for the person who solely plays to Catch 'em all. Competitive players would be upset because some of the more interesting Pokemon gameplay-wise aren't necessarily some of the more popular ones, people who play just because they like Pokemon would be upset because their favorites arne't necessarily one of the top 50 favorites (some of mine include Dunsparce, Stunfisk, and pretty much every poison or bug type and the entire 3rd generation), and people who play Pokemon games will be upset because they can't transfer over their old Pokemon. So while it's perfectly fine that you don't like all of them, straight up removing all of them will upset a lot of people (like it did with Ruby and Sapphire, leading to the creation of FireRed/LeafGreen).

Hype level went from like 50 to OVER 9000! in just 10 minutes in the morning, I guess that explains how much I'm awaiting for these games.

Still, I have 2 questions:

1) In battle, do the Pokémon will use their animations from Pokémon Stadium(2)/Colosseum/XD/Battle Revolution/Pokédex 3D Pro(?) or they'll have new animations?

2) Will they have some kind of connectivity with the GenV games (and by transitivity, the GenIII and GenIV games)?

@HammerGalladeBro
I would assume no and yes, respectively. It looks like it's mostly new animations, and the pokemon seem to move a lot more than the ones in the console games really. Maybe the same as 3D Pro? I don't know, never played it. And I don't see why you wouldn't be able to trade old pokemon over, they have Pokemon from all gens but II in that trailer.

I've never played a game since Platnium and I'm intrigued because I love the 3D Pokemon games! Haters should shut up and so what if the graphics are sub-par it blew me away compared to white/black. your also forgetting the game comes out in about a year which is plenty of time to fix visuals, your arguments are invalid! Furealz Out! Woof!

@Furealz
While I think the game looks great, I think it's safe to assume the game won't change very much vissually in the 9 or so months until its release. That's not a lot of time to completely overhaul graphics.

Knowing that Game Freak has to create probably more than 700 individual Pokemon, I think the graphics are just fine.

Finally, a fire starter I can be proud of again.

I'm surprised so few have mentioned the scale of the Pokemon. How cool is it that the handheld Pokemon games are finally showing the scale of the Pokemon? The only true indication is that scene with Golurk, but it's pretty clear. The new designs are pretty nice, and those two legendaries look good too. It's also really hard to guess what types they're going to be. As for the starters, hopefully they evolve into Pokemon with interesting typing as well, no more pure grass, fire or water (it's just too uninteresting for a starter), and definitely no fire/fighting (not that it seems likely that a fox would become a fighting type, though I would have said the same about certain small fire bird).

@Hawk

People like to bring their old Pokemon with them. For example, I have my Swampert from Gen 3. It's the same Swampert I've had with me for 10 years. People like that aspect.

Also, with the invention of just bringing previous gens upward (instead of trading like with Gen 1 and 2), you don't have to actually 'catch 'em all' and that's why that slogan disappeared. Only the most hardcore fans bother and it's less of a chore to catch 700 pokemon than to EV train and chain breed a perfect team.

With transferring, you can catch all of them in a previous gen (say, 3rd or 4th) and then upload them all into the next gen and not even have to worry about catching 300-400 of the Pokemon. So I don't see the point in getting rid of them, and there would be too much outcry if they got rid of certain ones that aren't popular, but have their fanbases.

I hope to be this pleased when I see the next Animal Crossing or 2D Super Mario game.

I know I'm getting kinda off-topic here, but there is absolutely no reason to say that AC New Leaf is just another rehash of Wild World and City Folk. If you actually watch some gameplay footage (there's a ton in Josh's and LinandKo's channels) or read blogs like this one you'll see that the game is nothing like the other and allows for a lot more of customization to be done, as well as many different mechanics. Though I agree that 2D Mario games are really getting stale.

As for Pokémon, I also think that the graphics look kinda bad (DQIX anyone?). I really hope they improve it, it will definitely be at this year's E3 so we'll see.

I've never been a Pokemon fan in all honesty, i got to maybe the 3rd trainer on the Blue version but didn't stick around. With that said, I understand why people like it and appreciate the series.

I actually liked what I saw with this Nintendo Direct and it actually got me interested in the series. I may end up checking the game out.

To anyone wondering about a "following Pokémon" ala HG/SS, did anyone else notice the trainer dressed like Red with a Pikachu on his shoulder? To me, that suggests customisable outfits and a potential for following Pokémon to be optional.

@MoldyClay

I guess that's why it's weird to me. It feels like a sad thing to remove all the Pokemon you've caught from a game just to move them to the next one, so I've still got all mine in their original game.

If you're still playing the old games, you can always break out Red/Blue, Gold/Silver, or Ruby/Sapphire when you want to Catch 'em All! Everyone wins!

I'm just pumped to have one for the 3DS hardware. However, with the amount of content b/w 2 provided, I won't accept anything less from this outing.

And DQIX did it on the DS! but to be fair its just the overworld that looks jaggedy.

Red/Blue Team Rocket is a Pokemon mafia, they steal things, run a secret gambling business, hold the president hostage etc. etc. you beat the leader Giovanni who then seriously has a mid-life crisis about how you beat him and needs to re-examine his life, then he disbands Team Rocket and is never heard or seen again.

Gold/Silver The remnants of Team Rocket are trying to re-consolidate and figure out what happened to Giovanni. You stop them, Giovanni is not found.

Ruby/Silver Team Aqua wants the world to be all water because they're stupid, Team Magma wants the world to be all land because they're stupid. Depending on which version you pick one is evil and one is good, oh and they still have the same pathetic goal whether they're portrayed as the "good" or "bad" guys.

And that's when I stopped playing them, Ruby was a disappointment, the world just didn't interest me anymore. I'm thinking about getting into the series again with Black/White 1 or 2 or maybe this one.

I don't care much about Pokemon. I haven't played one since the original Pokemon Red on Gameboy. So naturally this announcement does nothing for me. Still, it should sell a lot of 3DS systems, so that's good.
