Gearbox talks more about Aliens: Colonial Marines' unique lighting system

“We spent a lot of our preproduction time making this custom lighting system that plugs into Unreal Engine 3. We had to design something from the ground up that would give us the capability to create… all this tension, to create all these dynamic events and to recreate the look and feel of what we experienced growing up watching [Aliens].” - environment artist Chris Neely

Aliens: Colonial Marines is certainly going to look and sound the part, but I'm starting to get nervous that the gameplay won't actually be all that hot.

A valid worry RMC - last gen [PS360Wii] had many games [acclaimed and not] that focused on style over substance.

very few games based on the Aliens universe have lived up to their hype. just in case the gameplay is lackluster or flawed, it would be cool to have a mode that would let you just wander around as either an alien or a human and to fully control camera in order to appreciate all the details, ambience, and audio and to take screenshots. if there were story pieces to find like in metroid prime, that could be a really cool alternate mode that would be easy to create. like a different story to discover in pieces for different playable characters. i wish there was a turn based rpg based on the aliens universe, rather than just action and fps. there are roleplaying board games based on the Aliens universe but i dont think tbere has ever been a traditional turn based jrpg videogame or an offiicial mmo rpg.

I'm most worried it'll be all AVP and gore; not Scott/Cameron.

I have no worries. Gear box is a great company and they are big fans of the series. This game is going to be great.

Seems like Gearbox are really enthusiastic about this project. Working with minor details and all. Plus the gamepad as the "radar" etc... And let us not forget that they are a talented studio. Think this can actually be good.

But I'll wait and see when it comes out =)

I have faith in the game, it is made by Gearbox after all. Can't wait to pick up my copy.

Let's hope it turn out more like Borderlands and less like Duke Nukem Forever.....that being said I am excited for this game.

I'm getting very hyped for this game. I hope the Wii U version turns out the best because that is the one I want to support. I will skip it on U, though, if it's better elsewhere.

I fear the sales will not warrant the 5 year development cycle and will finally sink Sega.

As a fan of Metroid I hope this game is good. I have a bad feeling it won't be.

Sink Sega? Do you think they are having such a bad time lately? I mean I think Sonic Kart is doing pretty good sales wise. Could be wrong though. In that case Nintendo should just acquire them! That's a MUST!

But in all honesty, there are boatloads of Alien fans waiting for this. Like me. And from the looks of things it's going to be awesome. But in this (allmost) CoD-only world it might not sell to well. Specially if it lacks a load of useless online options.

I'm really hoping this game comes together well... Could you expound a bit on why you have concerns about the gameplay?

That's nice...

...controls?

I could see that, if Gearbox was developing the Wii U version. But it's an outsourced port so there are valid reasons to worry about the Wii U version, let alone how it's going to play on any platform.

My roommate was very excited for this game but the more video he sees of it he looses more and more interest. And speaking of videos, is there even any Wii U footage out there? Every video I've seen shows the tracker on the screen. That's not Wii U footage. So where is it?
