“Our commitment is that every time we release there’s a new level of magic in both the toys and the game so we need to upgrade the portal which will support all the new and old toys.” - Guha Bala, Studio Lead
In other words...we want more money! Check out more figurine pics here (thanks Jordan)!

That's a loaded answer. It sounds more like a PR explanation. In other interviews he's already explained that it's because of the new technology. The old portals aren't made to read leg-type/body-type, only element type. It actually makes perfect sense.
What would be nice is if they planned ahead and knew what they wanted in future games and prepped the portals ahead of time.
DLC...for your DLC. What a crock of shovel.
@OMGerBer
Or even if there was a way to update the portal itself, like have some kind of hardware/software or something in it that you could download a patch on an SD card for and then update it that way, but I don't know if that's possible with such a thing.
Multiple Choice:
Why are Activison requiring people to purchase a new portal for their next Skylanders game?
A) They're incompetent.
B) They're greedy.
C) They're cheap.
Answer: D) All of the above.
Considering I haven't even seen half of the skylanders promised for Giants, I think I'll be skipping this "upgrade".
Just more crap to fill the landfills next to the Guitar Hero and Rock Band drums.
@ecco6t9 Indeed, they get a hit and run with it until the IP bleeds.
Why not, ya know, have a year in-between game updates [but keep the IP alive in other media, like TV or something, in the meantime], so this doesn't spectacular blow up in your face [like GH]? At least, as fast...
CoD and Football games aside, annual game releases just don't work for very long.
