Rein says you can do Unreal Engine 4 on Wii U, but Epic isn't

"You heard the stupid gaffe yesterday about the Wii U. If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen." - Mark Rein

So there you go. This is just what I said earlier on the site as well as the podcast. Unreal Engine 4 can be scaled for Wii U. It's just that Epic isn't the one that's going to do it. I'm looking at you, Ubisoft!

@Trutrutru Also, the wii u is capable of HD to the same extent that the other consoles will, the wii couldn't render past 480p if i remember correctly
@ddddd a modified version of UE 2.5 that is close to UE3. I think Ubisoft (or someone) said they got the equivalent of UE 2.9 running on the 3DS too

The rest of the comment "While that game might not look as pretty as it would on a "true" next-gen console, the new engine is scalable to a variety of platforms, including mobile." More hate

He laughed at the Nintendo while he had an audience of Xbox and PlayStation fans, and then backtracked to save face as soon as nobody but Nintendo fans were still listening. Kotaku, IGN, and sites of that nature are only going to report the fact that Epic laughed at Nintendo and called it incapable. Reminds me of what was pulled at the presidential debates, and it was disgusting there too.

I know what you mean, this was fanboys/haters bait; there is a big difference to write something on twitter like "UE4 will not support Wii U..." to "Yes, @MarkRein laughed at Wii U running Unreal 4. He explains a little more:...", this was a tweet from an IGN fanboy editor, so they were really happy to hear about this.

And we all know sites like the ones you mentioned only post doom and gloom news related to Nintendo, because I haven't seen any news on those sites about the web framework Nintendo revealed at GDC.

I thought i was the only one that noticed. Its almost like the Nintendo team over there don't even exist. No mention of any of the Wii u indie support RMC posts here almost every day, Nintendo framework, the increase in hardware sales after MH3U released and 3DS dominating the Japanese hardware charts once again. But the moment any thing negative happens to Nintendo its all over their front page. I only go there because of the community, i find them hilarious.

@TimmiT

Best response I've heard so far. Putting UE4 on the WiiU just wouldn't make much sense. Most of the people here either don't understand that or just don't like the way he said it.

UE4 is an upgrade of UE3 that includes new features for lightning, reflections, particles, etc most of which require DX11 support and higher power than the WiiU can offer.

In a way it makes sense that the WiiU isn't officially supported. Still it would make the life of the developers much easier if they could export a project for WiiU directly from UE4 without having to do extra work. Also the UE4 is probably more optimized than UE3, so even for the same visual result you would at least get better frame rate in UE4.

Not having UE4 support is not the end of the world but it would certainly bring more games to the WiiU, but obviously without the fancy features.

Its perfectly possible to have the unreal 4 engine on the Wii U. But Epic wont bother because they consider the market too small, and they use the opportunity to moch the wiiu because they know that will appeal to the ps/xbox/PC fanbase which are their primary market. Its that simple really.

Pretty sure Metroid Prime used a heavily modified version of Unreal so maybe Retro will do something great with Metroid that uses an equally awesome, customized engine.

I say this all the time, but its true so here goes....

Gamers have turned into sour, negative, cynical little crybabies....and these developers from the west are unprofessional douchebag hipsters that deserve no respect in anything they say.

Combine that with the likes of pachter, and gaming culture and media is a sad joke leading the whole great hobby down the drain at a rapid pace.

well.. he gave ign some nintendo hate for their front page.

"no unreal 4 for wii u" which was just below one of their daily ps3/ps4 stories

Ikr. It just feels like the Nintendo team don't want to post this news, the only "good" new they've posted about Nintendo in the last couple of weeks is that Miiverse is coming to PC, but what about Unity supporting the console, or the web framework that will make things easier to indie devs to bring their games to Wii U and what about some of the kickstarter games announced on Wii U? They don't seem to care about that.

if you go to ign right now, on the front page you will see a picture of mario looking sad over the unreal engine thing then when you go to the wii u page down below there is a blurb about the whole thing with this blurb "Epic explains that Unreal Engine 4 won't run on Wii U -- so downgraded ports may be the platform's future". how effing bleak can you make it? and as you said, none of the positives that came out of gdc... it really makes me beyond pissed because they help in forming the consoles future.

So were not getting Gears of War or Bulletstorm? Tragic.

Seriously, what else does Epic make?

THEN he said.. "But WHY would anyone WANT to?"

And laughed uproariously until tears streamed down his cheeks and he was gasping for breath.

I've never heard that. And it in no way felt similar to Unreal at all. Retro was founded by the folks who used to be Iguana, who already had a successful Turok series under their belt. I doubt they needed to use the Unreal Engine. In fact I'm not sure that any Nintendo Published title has ever used that overrated engine, ever. Don't quote me on that though.

Actually, I've also read a few sources which did say Metroid Prime is built and a heavily modified Unreal Engine 2

And if true, look what they were able to accomplish with it.

Sounds like Epic, just like some of these other companies, have a personal beef against Nintendo.

Its not a beef against Nintendo, they are courting MS and Sony to not follow Nintendo's business model
by having them produce expensive consoles to justify buying their expensive engine.

I don't know, it seems that they're all too willing to trash Nintendo at every turn and not say that their engines "can" support the system but when the topic of mobile comes up they're more then willing to show engine support. I couldn't tell you if they do or don't have a beef but that sure is the image that they (and other western publishers) have been conveying when talking about their engines and anything Nintendo related.

you can always modify a game engine if you want and downscale it. with software almost everything is possible. i mean if it runs on iOS it can run anywhere.

Unreal Engine 4 is the best and most advanced commercially available engine. What would be the point of stripping it down and having it perform like UE3? In the sense of this being a waste of resources. Just use UE3 from the get go. It is an AMAZING engine as well.
