GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Who do you want in Smash Bros.?

End of the week, here we come! Everyone make sure to get your rest this Saturday and Sunday. Next week is going to be the busiest time of the year for Nintendo fans! Cannot wait for that...but for now, sleep! See you in a few, short hours.

Just incase you didn't remember the info coming from a previous Nintendo Direct, Nintendo and Sakurai reconfirmed today that we will indeed be getting our first look at Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS next week. I can't believe we've already come full circle for a new Smash Bros. game. The excitement that that brand builds up certainly rivals that of other big-name Nintendo brands, and is even bigger than some.

I can't even begin to fathom the amount of hours I've pumped into the Smash Bros. series. I remember spending so many months with the original Smash Bros.. I didn't think I would ever play a game more than that. Then Smash Bros. Melee came out on the GameCube. If I had to pick one game I've played more than any other in my life, that would have to be my pick. The same would be said for Brawl if I didn't have to become a stupid adult and do adult things all the time!

Now we're coming up on a brand-new installment in the series. It's also the first time that things are going portable. I still don't know how I feel about that, but I know it isn't a bad thing. I just need to see how/if the two titles work together and what you can experience on both sides. I think I might be more excited for this entry than any other.

Of course, one of the most exciting parts is looking at the brand new roster. There will indeed be returning favorites, but you know there has to be at least one or two newcomers in there. If I had my pick of two characters to make their first-time appearance, I'd have to go with Mega Man and Travis Touchdown. I really think both of those guys would have a lot to offer the series.

Those are my picks, now what are yours? Who do you want to pop into this fight for the first time? Leave us a comment and let us know!

Actually if they take very few out [I'm betting just Snake, Ike, Lucario and maybe Falco] then they actually have over half the roster already. Not much to build from the ground-up with them.

I do agree that knowing Sakurai and his bull-headed for small and lackluster rosters, we'll be lucky to get 40 [an extra 5 to Brawl's total number], though. :roll: :|

My hopeful roster is this, personally - http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/1486/ssbwiiurosterwishlist20.png

Seeing as we already have so many people for Megaman, my first pick is Rayman followed by 2 previously Sony only but 3rd party characters, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.

Remove Snake and bring the Konami rep I'd like to see (even though it wasn't created by them), Bomberman.

Characters that can L-cancel, air dodge, and move and react to hits like they aren't floating through space slowly. It doesn't take a tourneyfag to appreciate hectic gameplay that has some depth to it.

Alternate movesets. This is probably a pipe dream but it would cut down on clones and offer up tons of options if you could choose between two movesets for each character. It'd be wonderful, and probably balance hell too

These characters ~

Mario with standard moveset [ALT - Mario & Luigi, Ice Climbers style, with M&L art style and bros attack style moves]
Luigi with Luigi's Mansion based moveset [ALT - Mario & Luigi]
Peach with standard moveset [ALT - Super Princess Peach-based moveset)
Bowser with standard moveset [ALT - Minion-based projectile heavy moveset]
Wario with Wario Land based moveset [ALT - Warioware-based moveset]
Yoshi with standard moveset [ALT - Toad riding Yoshi with a faster, more air-oriented moveset]
DK with standard moveset [ALT - Friend-heavy moveset with rocket barrels, animal assists, etc]
Diddy Kong with close-combat combo-heavy moveset [ALT - quick 'hit and run' style moveset with bananas and peanut gun]
Link with standard moveset [ALT - Moveset lacking bows/boomerang/bomb, using other items from Link's repertoire]
Ganondorf with his own damn sword based moveset [ALT - Ganondorf with old school Captain Falcon moveset]
SS Zelda with standard moveset [ALT - SS styled Shiek with Shiek's standard moveset]
Samus with standard moveset, made to be more projectile focused, with rapid fire cannon [ALT - Other M style close-combat moveset]
Ridley with Project M Charizard like moveset, heavy on air attacks with a super jump [ALT - ground attack based heavy moveset]
Fox with standard moveset [ALT - Falco's moveset]
Wolf with standard moveset, made heavier and more defensive [ALT - more offensive Fox-styled moveset]
Kirby with standard moveset and no copy-power inspired moves besides the neutral B [ALT - entirely copy-power based moveset]
Metaknight with standard moveset [ALT - moveset based on Kirby's 'Grapple' copy power, with a multitude of ground and midair grab moves that have effects outside of grab range, like Lucario's tilt special]
DeDeDe with Dreamland games inspired moveset, without hammer [ALT - slower, more powerful hammer moveset]
Ness with standard moveset [ALT - Lucas moveset]
Pit with blade-based moveset and emphasis on extreme mobility [ALT - Bow-based long range moveset with emphasis on spacing and precision]
Pikachu with standard moveset [ALT - more powerful self-damaging moveset ala Pichu, but with special moves like Surf and Fly]
PKMN Trainer with 5th or 6th gen starters [NO ALT]
Mewtwo [ALT - Formes]
Chrom with Link style moveset, with emphasis on broad sword strikes to keep the opponent out of your hitbox [ALT - Faster, more agile strikes with emphasis on sword tipping ala Marth]
Lucina with combo-heavy moveset based on Marth's tilt special chains [ALT - Marth's moveset]
Shulk with Ike style moveset, slow but heavy strikes with a sword range that grows with damage % [ALT - Faster moveset that's fairly weak but each move inflicts some sort of character debuff, like poison damage, slightly slowed movement, tripping, etc]
Metal Face with a slow, heavy moveset based on precise close range strikes with some long range projectiles for mixup [ALT - idk]
Captain Falcon with standard moveset [ALT - Moveset wherein attacks move Captain Falcon (imagine F. Kick or Ike's running tilt), keeping him in constant motion]
Samurai Goroh with Meta Knight inspired moveset, with weak but quick blade strikes - moves slow but can finish combos with powerful smashes [ALT - idk]
Little Mac with fast and powerful boxing moveset but no grab moves and weak shield, focusing on offense [ALT - defensive moveset]
Game & Watch with standard moveset [ALT - moveset based on other Game & Watch moves throughout history]
Pikmin 3 Protags (as one character) [NO ALT]
Tom Nook as an extremely light character ala Jigglypuff with fast projectile heavy 'throw junk' moveset [ALT - slightly slower offensive moveset using household furnitures as weapons]
Ice Climbers with standard moveset [NO ALT]
Mii with some sort of light, fast moveset [ALT - slower, heavier moveset. Can't choose between - based on size of selected Mii]
Sonic with standard moveset [ALT - Classic Sonic inspired moveset, without homing attack or spring jump]
Bayonetta with idk man
Raiden (say what you want about Snake, he was more fun to play as than the entire rest of the roster put together)

I know some folks want to keep the roster limited and balanced, but... I am the opposite.

I want everthing bigger, better, more epic.

I want a huge roster (if it must be, supplemented by DLC).
I want epic stages. Multi-tiered, action elements, moving between environments, etc
Robust and reliable online

And just make it fun, like you always have Nintendo!

Balanced and limited? That's not very Smash Bros for me. It's about getting a group of people together and having crazy fun. The crazy bullshit that goes on is all part of the fun. I hope they don't forget it's roots of being a game to be played in the living room with friends and family. Yes online play needs to be improved but for me it isn't the main draw.

Make it big! Go crazy with stages and characters. Don't try too hard to make it a serious competitive fighter. Cause for me at least that's not Smash Brothers. It sells because it's crazy 4 player goodness. It's the Mario Kart of Fighting games.

I'd rather no more characters. The roster is bloated as is. Do we want to add more characters that people won't actually use? If they add new characters, then remove some old ones please.
Half the characters right now, are just clones of existing ones. They are basically costume changes.
User avatar

They are not clones. There are subtle differences and also that fact alone that it's another characters makes people choose it over another.

Speak for yourself. I use everybody and I'd argue that having so many accessible characters is one of the main things that defines the Smash Bros series' legendary replay value. Also, half the characters are clones? Unlike Melee, Brawl has no true clones (where there were 6 clones and 1 semi-clone in Melee in a cast of 26) and there's more than enough differences between Luigi, Ganondorf, Falco, Wolf, Lucas, and Toon Link and their respective counterparts to set them apart. Even if you want to be nitpicky about these differences, 6 out of 39 is hardly half, in fact, it's less than a 1/5th of the total cast.

"Half the characters right now, are just clones of existing ones. They are basically costume changes"

... have you even played Brawl? If so, did you even try most of the characters?

There aren't even a single "clone" in Brawl. Wolf has very similar Special moves, but all his other moves are unique. Falco has enough unique standard moves to not be considered a clone (though more is needed, me thinks). Luigi plays very differently to Mario, and has loads of unique moves. Toon Link is probably the cloneiest of all characters, and while most of his moves have the same sort of animation as Link's, he still plays extremely differantly. And Ganondorf has some Captain Falcon in him, but he's not nearly a clone (like he basically was in Melee). Lucas is also very unique, with some too similar attacks, of course.

If all these are "clones", then I feel sorry for Sakurai for all the work he has to so to prevent any character to have a slightly similar move... ._.

@sdsichero@Madman Ideas
More characters would be awesome but to say you don't want it balanced is detrimental to the game.

"Alternate movesets. This is probably a pipe dream but it would cut down on clones and offer up tons of options if you could choose between two movesets for each character. It'd be wonderful, and probably balance hell too"

This is one of the BEST ideas I've EVER heard and imo is next step for series. In fact, I would take it step further and instead of just alternate movesets, how about customizable moveset? So if someone wants, they can have Wario with part Wario Land moveset and part WarioWare moveset, or someone can have Ganonorf with Captain Falcon CQC moveset, but with some of his sword fighting moves. Like you say, it would be balance hell, but it would be amazing if done right.

SSB is all aboust playing how you want and giving players options, and this would be the next step.

@MegaShock100
This would be terrible. It would be terribly unbalanced.

I know some of you LOVE the fact that it's unbalanced for some reason or another. Maybe deep down you hate the game. I don't know.

But there needs to be some sort of compromise between competitive and casual. Balance the characters and make crazy stages but allow stage hazards to be turned off.
User avatar
09 Jun 2013 14:31

I think doing that for all characters might not be the best Idea. However, one thing I'm sure would work well, is to give all characters two Special Moves for every Special Option (two Up Special, Down Specials, etc). Like, Bowser's two Up Specials would be his Whirling Fortress attack, and Hammer Throw. Do you want a well-needed recovery, or a powerful throwing attack? ^^

And so on. However, costomizing with all moves for a Character Creation (using Miis) should be possible.

@OmnipotentSwine

That's why is the developer's job to balance it, genius. :roll:

Maybe you should have read and comprehended before posting your knee-jerk reaction. Re-read my last line:

"SSB is all aboust playing how you want and giving players options, and this would be the next step."

I don't like Brawl for many reasons, but I appreciate ALL types of SSB playstyle. This is a game about playing how you want and I enjoy playing both ways. But like Darth Vader say, you don't have to be the "tourneyfag" to appreciate faster and more complex gameplay.

Second, customizable movesets would be AMAZING for the competitive community, just as much for more casual fans and for fanservice.

Competitive games are all about experimenting and discovering the dominant strategy and then applying that strategy better than others or discovering a counter-strategy to that dominating strategy.

A customizable moveset is a treasure trove of depth since there is so much to experiment with and potentially discover. Plus is giving players tons of options and letting them play how they want to. If done right, it could lead to incredible amounts of depth. I consider Melee one of the most complex and deep fighting games out there, and imo custom movesets would take it too a whole new level, one no traditional fighting series could ever reach. Only a game like Smash Bros. can allow for something like this.

@MegaShock100
Customizable movesets in fighting games never do well. No one ever prefers them. They end up being benign and tacked on rather than beneficial.

Look at Soul Cal. It's not very popular. And I believe MK: Deception (might have been Armageddon) had it as well.

The 3D MK games were terrible and like I said Soul Cal isn't very popular.

@OmicronTurtle

I don't know what Brawl you were playing, but aside from Final Smashes and a few B moves, all of the clones had been revamped to the point where they aren't even remotely classifiable as clones anymore. I can't even tell if you're serious.

As for "nobody plays", maybe that was the case in Melee, but in Brawl, I play at least 20 of the characters constantly and a few others when I feel like switching up. And that's not including transformations (which I play as well or integrate).

And unlike Melee, I can't really think of a character I DON'T like to play as for one reason or another.

@OmnipotentSwine

Right because two failed or underwhelming attempts mean the concept doesn't work. You sure passed the IQ test!

SC is mediocre (but fun masher) except the first one and the fifth one is alright. MK... lol MK.

You are saying "no one" as if you actually speak for everyone who plays, but in reality you are completely ignorant of most opinions. In SC people enjoy using different weapons and customizing their characters' appearence, that is why people still play those games despite them having silly mechanics and design.

Custom movesets, IF DONE RIGHT, would be amazing, especially in series like Smash Bros.
