EoD - Smash Wii U!

Mario Kart 8 - details on development time, GamePad ideas, hope for F-Zero

The following comes from a GameKult interview with Konno and Yabuki. Information has been translated via Google.

- MK8 development began just more than a year ago.
- No others studio involved, 100% EAD Kyoto.
- About the Gamepad use: "Our priority is to provide the remote display on the GamePad only. We have other ideas, but that's all we can tell you for now."
- Why no F-Zero instead ?: "H. Konno: It has always been a Mario Kart per console, so we wanted to get a new one to have more people interested by our new system. But I also hope that there will be an F-Zero.
"
- About tracks size: "In Mario Kart 8 tracks have also been narrowed compared to Mario Kart Wii and reflects more the size of the road. "
- About customization: " Like Mario Kart 7 (but) with a little more choice"
- No editor even if they talk about it.
- About a Double Dash mode using the Gamepad: "H. Konno: For Mario Kart Wii, 7 and 8, we decided not to use it. But this is a request that is often heard, so maybe we can meet this desire.

A pointless Honk button better not be all they use the GamePad for in-game...

It's not pointless. It blows away racers Close to you. :3

Also, do they mean the Tracks will be shorter, or something? I don't really get it.

Well it also shows race rankings and a map of the course...

Really think they should have started working on this game much sooner.

Think they could have really turned the tides on their situation if they released it in Holiday 2013 rather than Spring (or whenever) 2014.

Sure the Wii version came out in Spring and went on to sell like gangbusters, but I think the earlier they get it out the better, and I think the Wii U needs Mario Kart more than the Wii needed Mario Kart at the time.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't want them releasing a half baked game, I want them to put as much effort as possible into it, but I just think they should have started sooner.

Oh well, I already own a Wii U and will get this game no matter what date it comes out :P.

I really hope the implement 2-player co-op (gamepad/wiimote)! Double Dash!! and 7 are my favorite console and portable titles of the series. Make it happen!

I'd really like a rear-view mirror on the GamePad screen.

Figured as much on F-ZERO. They likely came up with the idea, it was perfect for F-ZERO, but they had to do Mario Kart first, since it is more popular and more likely to move consoles. F-Zero just has to wait for the next race idea, since they already got their Mario Karts out of the way for this generation.

I'd support a Double Dash return. I know Devil Rising won't.

@Serebii

That doesn't really justify its existence other than taking things off of the screen.

That's SmartGlass quality and only useful as graphics porn.

It's not innovative or useful to the game. It just makes the game look nicer by taking everything off of it.

@GeneticRepoMan

The graphics alone already make it look less rushed than MKWii, which had the worst models of all the Mario titles on the console, IIRC.

great news coming from this interview, the game is 100 EAD Kyoto, and this is the best graphics for wiiU, so we can expect all Kyoto games to look at least like this, this gives me hope for zelda, also mayba an f-zero game is in development yay!!!

@GeneticRepoMan
You do know that they were creating Mario Kart 7, right? They worked on this game when Mario Kart 7 finished.

They couldn't start this earlier because they were working on MK7...

Oh please be more than just hope...

@IlikeBacon16
I'd love to have a choice, myself. You could touch the screen and pick between a rearview mirror or a map of the course or rankings or... :)

I think there will be a F-Zero for the Wii-U. But I think it will take a few years.

Also, I am still chocked at the lack of Ice Climbers games. I mean, new IC game for the eShop should be simple enough. D:

All this is 100% fine and dandy as long as Fawful at long last makes his racing debut.

I think the above quoted could be said about everything in regards to Wii U honestly. The system could have been out in Nov. 2011 with the way it's gone so far since the release (OS issues, lack of games, etc..)

Thanks for the name-drop Moldy! :mrgreen:

But FOR your information, I would totally support a "Double Dash mode" in the game, or in A Mario Kart game.

Know why? Because I don't HAVE to play it. The bikes should be treated like that too, you should be able to completely turn them off (yes even for 100 and 150cc) if you want. I'm all for more options. I just don't want to see another game that is JUST the DD idea, because I personally did not enjoy it.

They still need to keep the map on the tv.

When they say no editor I wonder if they mean no track editor mode. I hope that's not the case. I would be very disappointed.

A glimmer of hope is seen.

Has anyone seen comments like this about Star Fox yet? Since the 3DS remake they just seemed to move on.

I really don't care if the honk button is the only functional thing on the pad (they might do a weapon selection thing but dunno how hard it would be to use, esp if they do something with aiming). I just want a great, fun game. They can put the map on the pad if they want, but off-tv play would be more of a priority for me.

I don't care if that desire is DLC, or a mode that makes it to the fray late, but it will certainly make this the best Mario Kart game ever. I hope they thought about this before the audience suggested it... it's the first thing that popped into my head when I thought Wii U + MK.

@Devil_Rising
I agree with you. As an option, cool, but I don't think I enjoyed it enough to see a full DD2.

Miyamoto and Iwata have both made comments within the last couple years that they would like to see new Star Fox and F-Zero games. It'll happen eventually. Exercise patience.
