Pokemon X/Y Sell More Than 4 Million Units Worldwide in First Two Days

First Pokémon RPG for Nintendo 3DS Launches Simultaneously Around the World

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- On Saturday, Oct. 12, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for Nintendo 3DS became the first set of games in franchise history to launch simultaneously worldwide. Nintendo reported today that the games combined to sell more than 4 million units across Japan, Europe* and The Americas on Saturday, Oct. 12, and Sunday, Oct. 13.

"The early response to Pokémon X and Pokémon Y not only reaffirms the ongoing passion of Pokémon fans, but also indicates that an entirely new generation of gamers is eager to experience the franchise for itself," said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

Since this was the first global launch in franchise history, there isn't an exact historical precedent for comparison. However, when combining and comparing regional data for previous launches, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y would be the fastest-selling Nintendo 3DS games of all time and are tracking ahead of the last Pokémon RPG titles, Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2, by more than 70 percent.

With more than 245 million** games sold worldwide, the Pokémon franchise continues to be one of the strongest brands in the history of video games. Since 2002, five sets of Pokémon titles have combined to exceed 10 million units sold to date worldwide, with three sets combining to surpass 15 million units. That list includes:

Title Platform Total Global Sales
Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl Nintendo DS 17.63 Million
Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire Game Boy Advance 16.22 Million
Pokémon Black and Pokémon White Nintendo DS 15.42 Million
Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver Nintendo DS 12.67 Million
Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen Game Boy Advance 12 Million

*Data from Europe primarily covers Saturday, Oct. 12, as the great majority of retail outlets are closed on Sundays across Europe.

**Pokémon global sales are based on internal sales figures, and are current as of March 31, 2013.

Wow, so in two days they managed one quarter of lifetime sales for the highest selling versions? Man, that's crazy.

Makes me wonder how many 3DS were moved along with them, because I'd later heard that a LOT of people were 'upset' that a Pokemon game was coming to 3DS instead of DS, because they somehow thought that Pearl/Diamond thru BW2 meant that Nintendo was going to put Pokemon on only DS forever.. somehow. I still see comments in X/Y-LPs with people saying 'well too bad Nintendo, I don't have a 3DS, so you just lost a sale, has anyone dumped this game yet so I can play it anyway'.

I had an acquaintance in high school who was convinced that Nintendo wouldn't bring the series to the Game Boy advance because the system lacked infrared support. He was serious about it, I'm sure the people complaining about this are just being d-bags who are only doing it for attention and to see the reactions they'd get.

While I understand GF's reason to not release a Main Pokémon game for the Wii-U, I do Think they really should. I mean, it would certanly help the Wii-U a lot, since Pokémon, especially the main games, sells like hell, as proven here. ^^ And I for one would love a main game in gorgeous HD.

Heh heh, GTA5's got some stiff competition on the "fastest selling game of 2013" front now. (though I like both so no complaining or anything from me)

Heck a really good spin off would be good too. An action adventure game like those PokePark games on Wii, except expanded to be a bit more like Zelda or Okami, would be great, and heck I'm one of those people who'd love to see a new Pokemon Snap. With the Wii U's HD graphics the Pokemon and environments would look great, and you could have an option for either traditional controls or gyro controls to use the GamePad as a camera, and maybe even a special mode for off-TV play only where you can play in first person and move the controller 360 degrees around you to see all of the environment on the GamePad screen. Just an idea.

^ Well, they are working on a New Pikachu game, apparantly (one that might even become controversial), so that might be a PokéPark for Wii-U. ^^ And while I'm not that interested peersonally, a Pokémon Snap for Wii-U would be a perfect fit.

@nGen They still don't count digital sales yet, do they?

I imagine this will be the biggest Nintendo d/led title[s] also to date, so it could be alot bigger than 4 million!

Not really, GTA sold 17.5 million units in the first 3 days I read.

GTA5:
17.5 million / 159 million install base = 11.01% of users bought the game on the first 3 days

X/Y:
4 million / 35 million install base = 11.43% of users bought the game on the first 2 days

The GTA5 comparison is irrelevant anyway you slice it because it is available on two separate platforms, and soon to be three, whereas the Pokemon games are exclusive to one. And anyway, who cares?

17.5 divided by 2 is still higher than 4...

I love both games though so I'd agree that it doesn't matter at all either way.
