Seriously, that is all there is to it. All you need to enjoy this product is an original NES controller. The Wii NES RetroPort hooks up through your Wii’s GameCube controller ports. You slide the Cube controller end into the Wii, then slide your original NES controller into the opposite end of the RetroPort. That is all that is needed for setup. Once you go into a VC game, you just pick up your NES controller and play. I wanted to give the RetroPort a try with an NES game that would test reaction time, but the NES games available right now for the VC didn’t really suit my needs. I decided to try Sonic the Hedgehog instead.

Once I got past the very weird feeling of playing Sonic the Hedgehog with an NES controller, I was really digging it. The controller worked perfectly, just as it would with any other NES game. No lag time, no control issues…it was spot-on. Here I was thinking that there would be some sort of issue along the way, but I couldn’t find any. Slight taps of the A and B buttons, tiny presses of the D-Pad left and right…it all worked as it should. It felt just like the old days…albeit a mix of 8 and 16 bit fun.

I can’t recommend the Wii NES RetroPort enough. This is hands down, the best way to play NES games on the VC. Hell, it even works great for certain Genesis games as well! You can preorder the RetroPort by clicking HERE. The only differences between the version I have, and the final version is that the one you get will not be purple, and the two plastic parts will be bonded together. A huge thank you to the gang at RetroZone for letting me test their product!
