Why no online in StarFox 64 3D?

A few days back, the Big N revealed some details for the upcoming remake of StarFox 64 on the 3DS. It’s great to see the game coming back, and it’s getting a handful of interesting bells and whistles to go along with the visual update. Unfortunately, Nintendo has decided that online play isn’t a necessary part of this game’s feature set. I was looking forward to online dogfights, but I guess no one at Nintendo was. How can they leave this feature out?
