Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

A long time ago, there was a Japanese guy who created a game where you had to jump over barrels being thrown at you by a giant monkey. That game was so successful that it moved the company into the world of mainstream video games. That company's name is...not really important. But years later they decided to make like wrestling and turn the giant monkey face by giving him a makeover which included a snazzy ice cream cone haircut and a tie with his initials on it. The monkey's name...is not important also, but they gave him a co-star, his alter boy, Diddy Kong, who later went on to star in less successful games. So unsuccessful that the company didn't know what to do with him, until they decided to let Retro inject some new blood into the franchise. 2 and a half years later, that game has made its' way to the Nintendo 3DS with THREE D, new levels, power-ups and an easier difficulty as per series tradition. This is that game, and it's name...is kind of important.

Currently downloading it. No surprise it's already an hour in and it's almost half way done downloading. Looking forward to playing it once again but this time in 3D like it was meant to played and no waggle controls. :D

Have had it pre-ordered for months, but once again no stock on release date in Europe. Checked every shop in my town and couldn't find a single copy. Very excited to play this again though, so will probably head back for another look tomorrow.

It's fine once you get used to it, but I just wish they let you map the controls how you want. Right now there are two control schemes:

Move with Circle Pad
Roll/pound with X/Y
Jump with A/B
hold/grab with R/L

or

Move with D Pad
run/hold/grab with X/Y
Jump with A/B
Roll/pound with L/R

Sounds awkward. BTW, I am taking critiques on how I do topics for games. But as to not clutter this thread, send me a PM about the subject.

So how is the framerate compared to the Wii version?
I don't want an "all-in-one" multimedia system. I want a GAME console. ~ (me after the Xbox One reveal)

it's not as smooth, I don't know how to clock it but I'd say it's about half. that being said it's still as fun as ever.

Yeah, it definitely isn't as smooth and there are a lot more jaggies due to the low resolution. The controls are not too bad though, I got used to them right away. Still a great game that is a lot of fun.

On a side note. I went to buy this Saturday night at Wal-mart, the day after release, and had to ask an employee why there were no copies in stock. Turns out they didn't even know it was out yet and pulled out about 20 copies or so from the back room. lol

This game is great! Yeah it was good on Wii, but sooo much better on a portable.

It would have been amazing if they didn't just port it and add a few levels. It would have been amazing to combine in DLC like this did with New Super Mario Bros 2. I'd pay money to have access to additional levels! Add in classic levels similar to what they did with NSMB2!

Oh well I can hope for DKCR2 for that right?

I'd buy this game again in a heart beat if they offered this. Must have Kremlings though so no goomba-wannabe-Tikis plz. ^_^

Doubt it.

Retros probably working on something else now. :[

Does anyone else wonder if Nintendo gave Monster the chance to work on the port to give them some experience for a sequel?

that's my thought. If this is the case that means the Excite Series has been put to rest for a while, which is a shame. ExciteBots is one of the Best Wii games.

Yeah, I thought it was really weird (and pretty dumb) how you have to manually switch the usage of the D-pad or the circle pad. And you can't switch the functions of the L/R and X/Y buttons separately from the movement controls.

Maybe. The same was done with Batman Arkham City and Origins. Or it could be to give them experience with the system.

I bought DKC Returns for the 3DS yesterday and I'm having a great time with it so far. I love how I can roll and jump using buttons instead of shaking the Wiimote. I can hardly tell with the frame rate to be honest, on the 3DS it still looks like a great game and plays like one too.
