Wii U DS Player

Postby LSF22 » 03 Dec 2012 16:39

Just curious if anyone thinks Nintendo will release a DS Player attachment for the Wii U like they did the Gameboy Player for Gamecube? I know it wouldnt be anytime soon since they are still selling the 3DS which is backwards compatible but maybe in a couple years when sales slow down for everything. I think it would be awesome to play some DS games on a bigger screen and now it will be possible with the gamepad. I know it wont look to great all stretched out, but it would be nice to play on your tv and then pop the game out and put it in your DS when you leave the house.

I guess it's technically possible(especially with some TVs being able to display 3D), but I think ultimately Nintendo would want to avoid canabalizing their sales of 3DS if you could just buy them on one system. After that... book-style mode would be impossible, at least in the sense of what you would be willing to do to play a quick game or two. At least any 3DS tilting-game aspects could be done with the gamepad, but with only one camera(and forward facing at that) a few features may need to be cut or inaccessible for certain games.

...but mostly I think Nintendo would just want to avoid taking sales away from the 3DS and even current sales for regular DS systems. Otherwise sure, I'd like to have options, and it'd be pretty neat.

They should've just added a DS/3DS slot inside the Gamepad.

why build obsolete hardware for already sold software when you can use new, existing hardware and make people pay for downloadable software that can't be resold, traded, etc.?

You mean like the Wii Mini?

I don't know how good the GB Player did but there had to be some sort of market for it. I think in 3 or 4 years when Nintendo has moved on from the DS and is focused strictly on the 3DS and whatever new handheld they have coming out, it might be worth releasing a DS Player for $75 or that costs them $10 to make. Maybe its just wishful thinking since i have a bunch of DS games but im tired of playing them on my DSiXL.

You're probably right though that it will likely be VC releases if anything. Maybe they can add save sharing somehow for those who own the original DS game.

I get the idea with the two screen set up, and it might work well for some games (Mario Kart DS comes to mind), but a heck of a lot of games depend on the fixed relation between the screens for accurate gameplay, which I think would be a huge problem with the game pad - having to hold it in a fixed position stretched out in front of you so you can see both it and the TV at the same time. Sure, that's definitely not every game, but if that's a problem for a significant portion of the games, I don't think Nintendo would be willing to release that product.

i don't mean like wii mini. i mean like existing hardware that can virtualize old games, i.e. VC.

as for lakster's idea, there's no need to use both tv and wii u gamepad. just the gamepad would suffice. turn it lengthwise and make the whole gamepad screen display both ds screens.

Exactly. I think maybe the reason why we haven't heard anything from Nintendo about the VC service for the U is because they might be planning something really special with DS games to launch alongside it and probably announce it at E3 2013. Heck maybe they might even put some full retail DS games on both the U and 3DS eShop.

lol.. i see what you're getting at, but i guess the same could be said of using the stylus in horizontal method, tv+gamepad or not.

control goofiness aside, i don't think they'd ever virtualize their portables on a console again anyway, now that they can do it via their portable stores.

I think the GameBoy Player was released as a sort of bridge between the GameCube and the GBA. Since the GBA was so popular and people had a lot of games for it, the GameBoy player made sense at the time, because people would already have the soft for it (there was different Gamecube + GBPlayer in Japan).

Now, it doesn't make much sense to make it as an accessory, especially since the 3DS can play DS games. As for download solutions, we might see that, but I'm not sure Nintendo will bother. They've yet to bring the GBA virtual console to the 3DS :P

That said, the Gamecube onl sold about 20 million units or so vs the GBA's 100 million units. I think it was more or less a great money maker way for people to buy more GBA software.

What I'd really love is to play 3DS games on my Wii U.

Seeing 3DS game descriptions and screenshots on the Wii U eShop makes not wanting this so hard. XD

Except there's no market for 3D TVs in America. Until that changes and prices come down, the likelihood of a 3DS Player is slim. =/

It doesn't have to be in 3D. If they'd just give it to me in 2D I'd be ok with that. :)

Sounds interesting, but I'm unsure if Nintendo will do it. IIRC the Super Game Boy didn't come out until after the GB had already been on the market for over... 6 or 7 years. If they were to make one I think it'd only be for games on the original DS, not the 3DS, since it's too new and they wouldn't want some $60 or $70 add on cannibalizing the sales (plus, remember the Super GB couldn't play GBC games).

Yeah I know the GB Player on the Gamecube came out only after the GBA had been on the market for two years, but I feel I need to emphasize that the situation was different (Nintendo's home console sales at the time were rather poor, while their handheld sales [especially since they had no competition at the time] were through the roof).

Actually the Super GameBoy 2 could play GBC games.
