Wii online play on Wii U

When you play a Wii game on the Wii U can you use the online functions of the game as when I loaded up the Wii menu I didn't see an option to set it up and doing a google search on it I cannot find any information about it.

Will I need the external ethernet box to play online?

It uses your Wii U settings for online.

I tried it again and it did work but the first time I tried it online it said there was no connection.

Thanks for the information as I searched the manual and even searched Nintendo's support site and couldn't find anything about it!
