Wii U - The "everything" Info Thread

I linked my Club Nintendo account around 12:30 am yesterday and it still wasn't show the survey at 4 am or so, so it takes some time. It is showing up now, so I'm guessing it takes roughly 12 hours to show up?

Also, I really wasn't looking forward to day one system and game updates like PS3, but we have arrived. Welcome to the HD era. :/

First impressions after getting everything set up and playing F Zero for a while. It feels like I just bought a new Nintendo portable instead of a console since I have only looked at my TV 10% of the time. I'm sure that will change as I get more games though.

My Walmart had 28 Wii U's at launch and only 4 of them were the basic model. 20 were reserved for pre orders, which I made sure to get and the remaining 8 were for retail (4 deluxe and 4 basic). They couldn't find the games or accessories though. Must have some bad organization in the stock room. :/

no. it doesn't send video to your wiiu. the controller has an ir led. it can act as a remote for the box. that's all

You can use the A button as enter, and you might be able to use the D-pad as arrow keys. You can also use X and Y as channel up and channel down

So...90% of the cost of this system is the controller, right? Has to be.

90% - Controller
8% - Software
1.9% - Goofing Off
0.1% - Hardware

Come on Nintendo, that's embarassing. It's not even in the same ballpark speed as PS3/360's ram speed.

It's actually GDDR3-1600, not GDDR3-800. It's not AS terrible, but still.

As we heard in the past, porting to Wii U is hard to get parity out of. Whereas making games from the ground up for Wii U accel. Apparently.

and yes, the wiiu hardware is sad. we knew this before we had systems to tear open.

Nintendo wants to cort (nice filter) third parties, then makes a console that's hard to port to. I knew this problem existed, but I never expected that we'd have noticeably worse performance than 7 year old consoles. For some reason I don't see the Wii-U getting much special attention to make things work.

Seems like the majority of gamers on the Internet (NeoGAF, B3D Forums, etc.) are extremely disappointed at the Wii U since the Wii U seems like an overpriced console that is supposedly on par with the XBOX 360/PlayStation 3 in terms of power, to the point where gamers are more willing to wait for the XBOX 720/PlayStation 4 than buy the Wii U. But I could be mistaken though.

Somehow, I have a feeling that Nintendo lost a huge chunk of fans (not fanboys) because of the Wii U being supposedly on par with the XBOX 360/PlayStation 3. This may be a very sad day for Nintendo. But I hope I am mistaken (though I doubt it).

You can't judge the majority reaction from forums like those. I think Nintendo and Wii U will be just fine in the long run.



Anyway, as for my initial verdict:

Wii U system itself - Didn't like the long ass update you have to do right away, but otherwise, the system itself is really cool and shows an awful lot of promise.

Nintendo Land - Bright, colorful, good looking. Cool music and retro graphic touches here and there. Otherwise? I wouldn't have paid for it by itself. Not because it's a minigame collection. But because it's nowhere near close to Wii Sports, which every single game in that was at least OK, if not great. This, on the other hand? Meh. Not bad. Just meh, to me. Glad it was a pack in.

New Super Mario Bros. U - So far? Fantastic. There are things I already see that I liked better about NSMBWii, such as the nice item inventory style menu, which this is lacking, as well as the cool card game for item Toad Houses. And naturally, it seems as if NSMBWii had the cooler power ups (Propeller, Penguin Suit). But the graphics are awesome, of course, and the game overall is very cool so far. Well worth the money.

I agree with Devil_Rising about Nintendo Land and I'm also loving NSMBU so far. Haven't touched ZombiU yet, so I'll gice my verdict on that when I do tomorrow.

The rumor was 32mb. For reference, the 360 has 10mb of eDRAM. But it'd have to be some super experimental ram to make up the speed difference in the regular ram. I mean...43% SLOWER than what's in PS3 and 360. I mean...I literally cannot think of how they came to that. It couldn't have been that much more expensive, could it?

And the fact is they're losing money on this system, and it's all because of that controller. What were they thinking? Ditch the NFC, make it a pack-in for "Pokemon Snap The Revenge" and shave enough money from the controller to get better ram.

Im close to believe this, the gpu will surely be more powerful and advanced, but the tablet will take away all that extra horsepower, and if developers indeed have to use it instead of the cpu... then there really is few reasons to think this console will be able to run games any better than 7 year old consoles. Right now, all ports have worse performance, even those that had nintendo's assistance.

Sonic Racing Transformed is better than the PS3 and 360 versions. And Darksiders 2 apparently doesn't have screen tearing like its' brethren.

But yeah...someone's going to get fired I think.
