I may get this base on not finding the perfect Hard Drive that's 2.0 and compatible with a y-cable or plug in.

If you can fine me a cheap one that at least have 500 gb and compatible with a y-cable, please let me know, because I'm lost :/

Can someone give me a step by step on how to hook up a Hard Drive to the Wii U and what brands work and don't work. I don't have one yet but soon when second shipments come in. I don't want to deal with confusing and keep going back and forth, buying and returning Hard Drives. Any suggestion? Are anyone having any issues so far?

Buying a Y cable would solve any compatibility problems. And I believe anything 2TB and below is cool...

I heard the WiiU only can handle 1 usb devive at a time, so will it recognize the HDD and its 2nd cord as 1 device or 2?...

Nintendo has stated that the best hdds are the one with their own power supply, like an ac adapter. they also said the y cable ones will work as well and the wii u recognizes that its a y cable and not 2 separate usb hdds.

ive already read of issues with single usb hdds with no power supply messing up. probably want to avoid that.

as for brands, no idea.

one device. iirc on the y-cable one of the plugs only has the power connections. so all it is for is to draw another 5v

also, at 8bitmemory.com you can buy hard drives that are built into original NES and SNES cases. more expensive and dont seem to be self powered but still pretty cool. i havent tried this site, just noticed it in the latest gameinformer shopping guide.

So can you actually play with game saves off the external hard drive instead of the internal memory? I have a 8 GB basic model with a 500 GB external drive and I'm wondering how to do it.

Is there an actual list of some compatible HDD's, or will just any drive with a Y cable or it's own power supply work? I've got 2 extra drives available but just need some info before I try hook one up and format it. I'd like to also know if we can play game saves directly off the HDD.

i know there was a list of hdds somewhere but even then they couldnt guarantee anything. they just recommend using a self powered hdd for the best chance of compatibility.

as for game saves, i dont know. i would assume all game saves will save to the internal storage but i havent hooked up an hdd to find out yet. i know games downloaded to the hdd will run off the hdd.

Around 10 days ago I bought a 500 GB external hard drive made by Toshiba from Wal-Mart. The device worked fine for around a week, but today when booting up New Super Mario Bros. U it flashes to a screen that says, "There is a problem with the USB storage device" giving me an error code of 160-0105. What the heck does this error code mean?

By USB. There isn't anything that needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet.

Nope I'm just using the USB cable that came with it. It isn't a Y-cable just a regular one.

that's why, then.... nintendo said that in order for an external hard drive to work properly it ideally needs to plug directly into the wall, but if it can't do that then it at least needs to have a y-port and plug into two of the wii u's usb ports. otherwise the hard drive won't be getting enough power to operate it properly.

Ok so are these Y-cables available at major retailers like Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, or Walgreens? Will the Y-cable work by plugging in another USB cable and such?

If you get an HDD, you need a Y-Cable to power it if it doesn't have its own power source.
