General Information
Release Date: November 18, 2012 (NA), November 30, 2012 (EU), December 8, 2012 (JP)
Price: $59.99 US
# of Players: 1 - 5 Players
Miiverse: Accomplishments, Notes

New Super Mario Bros. U is the fourth entry into the New Super Mario Bros. franchise, the second to grace a home console, as well as the second New Super Mario Bros. game to be released this calendar year. While we've seen a lot more Mario over the past few years than usual, some feel that this is a bit overkill. While the game hopes to dissuade you from thinking that by introducing Super Mario World map elements, Yoshis, and one new power-up, it's going to be a while before we see Mario in a 2D adventure since Nintendo only releases one 2D Mario game per Nintendo platform, per Shigeru Miyamoto's request. New Super Mario Bros. U is also the first Mario game in High Definition, sporting 1080p graphics in all of its' shiny, plastic goodness. Hopefully, Mario won't let us down, like he let the Mushroom Kingdom down earlier this year.

Downloadable Content
New Super Luigi U
- Announced during the February 14, 2013 Nintendo Direct, a downloadable, single player expansion was announced that will star Luigi. Every level will be completely remixed for this Expansion, complete with Flag Poles, Secret Exits and Star Coins; the expansion will have its' own set of Challenges as well. No date or price has been set for this expansion, but Satoru Iwata likened it to full retail software. Considering Nintendo's DLC pricing thus far, it might be pricey.

Good thing we have DLC so we can still be getting new Mario content 3 years from now.

I guarantee they won't do 3 years of content for NSMBU. Maybe 3 content packs that lasts until March (a span of 5 months, just like NSMB2, which is lasting until the end of this month). That gets us until Pikmin 3, give or take a month.

I actualy can't wait for this game! As far as DLC goes, I think it will be better than NSMB2 because of challenge mode. I could see different backrounds for the coin battle mode, and possibly an add on world 9 in the sky. (Like NSMBwii's) Im excited for any DLC for the game, and will definately buy it! With NSMB2's DLC, it was pointless, and pretty bad. With challenge mode, I could see how they could put tons of new ideas into the game!

Don't give up your hope. Keep in mind that Nintendo is in for the profit, and they only do one Mario 2D title. While I'm sure it won't be a "Constant" DLC, I'm sure we will get some DLC once a year or something.

So, did anyone see all that new footage someone put on Youtube?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nYT7wxH-S4&feature=plcp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4w63PezZmw&feature=plcp

Apparently this guy (Super Normal Mode, whoever he is) got a copy of the game sent to him and played a whole bunch of levels, since you can see an absolute metric ton of new areas in the above videos.

Also, some of the new content from the official site included this great Coin Battle trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxSrs0PaQnI

Got to love the ghost house stage and the fact they reused the SMB 3 brick tileset in one of the battle levels.

I just watched a little bit of that first video, and now I REALLY want to get a Wii U sooner than later. Novelty of owning a shiny new toy aside, NSMBU looks so damn good. I'm looking at some of those stages and it does look more challenging than NSMBWii. I really wish Nintendo would release NSMB: The Lost Levels, though. Not DLC, but entire game that's brutal from the first level to last. It would be freakin awesome to see a Lost Levels that make use of all the complex level ideas that the NSMBWii/U games have thanks to modern tech.

This games is awesome and the challenge mode is very cool. I can see how some people are suffering from Mario overkill, but I grew up with Mario and the more the better. The returning enemies from Mario World are cool and new Flying Squirrel Suit is nifty!

Ugh, it may be that I'm being reckless (as usual) but this game has way more of those challenging moments than the previous games. I've gotten the Super Guide block to appear twice now. What I'm wondering is... Is it the same as in NSMBW where JUST having the block appear will unshinify (heh) your save file stars? I'm in one of the later levels of World 5 (Soda Jungle) and I made a Super Guide block appear. I played other levels to see if it would disappear and it didn't. I seriously don't want my stars to be unshiny. Can anyone confirm?

I'm having a lot of fun with this game. As far as it being more challenging is concerned, yes, I think it is. This may be because of boost mode though. Whoever plays with the gamepad usually likes to mess us up as opposed to helping us.

Compared to NSMB: 2, this game is much better in my opinion. Improved level design, improved graphics, multiplayer up to 5 people, challenge modes that are actually interesting as opposed to coin rush, Yoshi, and so on.

I've only beat two worlds so far, but yeah, great game. Enjoying it a lot more than Nintendo Land and Black Ops 2.

I got 5-stars in this over the weekend. It's no cakewalk. I'll take a short break before tackling the Challenges.

I got all 5 stars recently, too.
Spoiler:
The Star World levels can be brutal!
I've completed a few of the challenges but, wow, they get TOUGH. It's going to be a while before I go back and try them since I have many other new Wii U things to do but it's probably going to be never before I'm able to get a gold rating on all of them…

Agreed, the SMW nods are really cool. Mixing it with SMB3 is even better!

Watching some gameplay of it on YouTube *almost* makes me wish I had a Wii-U, I thoroughly enjoyed playing NSMB Wii with my siblings. So much frustration and fun... It's so easy to picture the 4 of us flailing about in this game, too.

Ok this has been driving me absolutely insane all game..

How.. How did the developers leave out one of the fundamentals of Mario physics with that if you hit a ? block on the bottom right and it contains a mushroom the mushroom will pop out to the left, and vice versa . Hitting it on the bottom left will send it out moving to the right.

I've died countless times because I'm trained to expect it to work like this and it doesn't..

What "fundamentals"? SMB3 was the only game that did this, it isn't a staple.

My biggest grip is probably the music. D: I don't really enjoy it in this title. I don't know why, I think it's too similar to past NSMB titles. It's a good game don't get me wrong. I just have a few personal dislikes here and there.

....wait, NSMBW it does this? :c Really sucks for someone like me who might struggle a lot with later levels, but still want to clear them myself and keep all the start.
I think the Super Guide blocks disappear after you clear that level, though.

Anyway, I love this game! As usual, the first 5-6 worlds were a bit too easy, but still fun! And the Challenges are great... and man, those things are hard. Even the easiest ones I had to play over and over to get the gold medal.

Well I just beat the game. Now I'm working through Superstar Road to try 100%ing Story Mode. I'm also still playing the Challenges trying (Gold) medal everything. I'm also playing the unlocked Boost Rush modes.

Most likely Boost Rush stages and maybe a few more challenges. No way they will add more original levels or a new world to the map. As far as by when, it's anyone's guess.

NSMB 2 was released last summer with DLC starting that fall. Since NSMBU released last fall, I don't see DLC starting until this spring. I could be wrong though as it's just a guess.
