GT Countdown - Top 10 shooters

Postby Turner4590 » 04 Dec 2012 23:20

This list is a joke. Modern Warfare 1 above Half Life 2!?

And honestly, these people need to actually sit down and play Goldeneye again. Sure it was great for it's time, but it has aged abysmally.

Okay I'll admit I haven't watched this yet, but going by these comments: I think the placement is based on how "influential" the game is rather than overall quality. Goldeneye pretty much set a standard for it's day and is pretty much the game that managed to make FPS games relevant on consoles (before Goldeneye it was more of a PC genre since controllers of the time [though mainly the 16-bit console ones] were considered heavily inferior to the keyboard/mouse set up).

Also, while the placement may seem strange now, lets face it: Modern Warfare 1 is a game that helped to shape shooters this past gen, like it or not. Also, to be fair, Modern Warfare 1 did come out before the CoD series fell into the trappings that MW2 and 3 gave the series (if those games never happened and it was just Treyarch's games these past couple of years I think the series wouldn't have the stigma it has, especially since I feel World at War, Black Ops 1 and 2 not only have the tight controls of MW1, but have better level designs and narratives that actually have interesting characters [I should note I don't hate MW2 and 3, but I will agree they were too samey, and had weaker narratives outside of select moments]).

You're perhaps not wrong when saying "it's about how influential the games were", but still... Goldeneye? Yeah, it made people on console play a FPS which there weren't THAT many of on console, but while I can admit to having enjoyed playing it with other people at a time, it was S*** compared to what was on PC at the same time. Yeah, it was popular, but that doesn't make it all that great.

You're absolutely right. The fact that it was popular doesn't make it great. The fact that it was great makes it great.
Any objections lady?

I still haven't played Modern Warfare 1, but I did play Half Life 2...didn't see what was the big deal about Half Life 2, perhaps because I missed Half Life 1?

As for GoldenEye, it's in my N64 right now. I think it has aged very well. How does a game age well? It still plays well, and GoldenEye does just that.
1) Plays well? Yes.
2) Awesome levels? Yes.
3) Awesome weapons? Yes.
4) Multiplayer? Yes.
5) Explosions. Explosions! EXPLOSIONS! Yes.
6) Different objectives pending on difficulty selected? Yes.

Those are just a few.

Gametrailers has their list.... here's MINE.

10. Turok - The N64 classic was better in Turok 2, but the original Turok had so many things that modern games simply don't have, ranging from dozens upon dozens of cheats and modifiers. But the sheer joy of killing dinosaurs as a badass Native American with a space bazooka is unquestionable.
9. The Darkness - Did I just sprout tentacles and eat the heart of a mobster? Cool!
8. Left 4 Dead - you, three friends, and a million zombies. Who's got pills?
7. Perfect Dark - In a just world, Joanna Dark would be as famous as Lara Croft and as respected as Mario. Sadly, Rare lost their minds and Perfect Dark Zero happened (the only game I ever regret buying). But the original? Amazing.
6. Bulletstorm - Remember when games were fun and didn't take themselves seriously? Bullestorm does. Have a hotdog.
5. Bioshock - Is a man not entitled to have a great story, pure gameplay, and a lack of multiplayer in his first person shooters? No, says the man at Activision; it needs more on-rails explosions. No, says the man at EA; it needs online multiplayer. No, says the man at Capcom; it more disc-locked content. I rejected these notions and chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture!
4. Half-Life 2 - Gravity Gun. Alyx Vance. Dog. Best game ever.
3. Team Fortress 2 - It's just pure insane wacky fun. It can get messy, but I dare someone NOT to have fun in a match of TF2.
2. Halo 1 - Halo 2 and Halo 3 may have evolved the formula, but something about Halo 1 just felt "right" to me. It felt tighter, more responsive, more skill-based. The pistol was the great equalizer, where skill with that starting weapon alone could tip the balance, long before instant-kill plasma swords and dual wielding was the name of the game.
1. Goldeneye - Yes, I agree with GT on this one. "Best shooter ever", probably not, but it's the best shooter I to me personally due to all the amazing memories I had. All those fun modes, all those clever gadgets, all those intense multiplayer matches... By far the best time I've ever had with a shooter.

GoldenEye did have dual analogue controls. You could/can use two N64 controllers if you choose to do so, and use the sticks on both to control Bond. It's a bit odd of course, but if you can get the controllers together, or held decently, it does work...a little fact most don't seem to know about Bond.

OK but dual analogue setups still make me want to abort puppy fetuses. The first two Primes were the only game's I ever tolerated such for, and that's because their hard lock system made it bearable.

GT Countdown - Top 10 shooters

Man, I know that its ''cool'' to hate CoD because its mainstream, but CoD4 was nothing short of a masterpiece. That game was tons of fun and set the standard for FPS games to follow. And Goldeneye DESERVES that number 1 spot, its just, well, the best.

GT Countdown - Top 10 shooters

Postby MegaShock100 » 05 Dec 2012 01:57

If the list is about most influential, than #1 should be like Doom, followed by Quake, Half-Life, then Goldeneye.

And I was just reading a critique of Goldeneye, where the guy points out its crippling controls, retarded AI, bad level design and overall lackluster presentation. I mean, if you have the nostalgia for it then obv. it'll play well. But for people who never cared for it, it's gonna be awful. Same thing can't be said for genuinely good games like some of the PC shooters like the first Quake.

@TheLastBlade

lol @ gamefailers. Goes well with LameSpot and IGNorant. xD

People don't even listen to the "rules" of the list. Modern Warfare 1 wasn't on the list, because Modern Warfare 4 was. They didn't list multiple games of the same franchise.
