Here's a bit of bad news. Remember talk of another Wii U update that was going to speed up loading time on the Wii U? Seems that was nothing more than a translation error. The update in question was pertaining to Dragon Quest X, not the Wii U itself.

I'm sure they are. He just didn't refer to it in this particular interview.

Nintendo not actually working on Wii U loading speed update

Really does need to be addressed, even if it's only for the smaller apps like Miiverse and Friend List. Those really shouldn't take as long as they do.

Obviously a misleading headline. We don't know if they're working on it or not.

Nintendo not actually working on Wii U loading speed update

Postby OmicronTurtle » 20 Dec 2012 08:23

The Wii U has been out for three weeks now and I still have no desire to buy one...this has never happened to me before for any Nintendo System and if they don't seem interested in getting their act together and ironing out these initial bugs and pain points it doesn't increase my desire for one at least not until a real System Seller Game comes out but that probably won't happen in 2013. I don't see Metroid, Zelda, 3D Mario or Smash Bros. arriving in 2013.

The games will come in time, Nintendo doesn't cater specifically to you. We don't even know what will come out past Spring of 2013.

Again, that's not what they said. They said the update Iwata was referring to was for Dragon Quest X. They in no way said they aren't dealing with load times

Well again, I'm not as concerned about loading times as I am about the system still locking up requiring pulling the power cord out of the socket to reset.

the load times are obviously being addressed in some way, and will see optimizations in time.

Turtle, if you honestly think there won't be a heavy hitter/system seller in 2013, you are a moron

Nintendo not actually working on Wii U loading speed update

Postby ronnande » 20 Dec 2012 13:53

Obviously they have programmers working on optimizing and speeding up the OS, but they wont officially state that. It will seem as they admit something is wrong and faulty with the system. That would indeed be a bad move. I think peoples problems with the loading times are a bit exaggerated, they are not THAT long. Plus the WiiU has the most complex OS of any console to date, and that will lead to longer loading times. But that said I still think it should be possible to speed it up on the WiiU. I also think the random crashes are a much more important issue to fix.

Except, Iwata did exactly that when he promised in his most recent Nintendo Direct (19 December) that improvements would be made to the laggy OS.

Indeed, we already have Pikmin 3 just around the corner, and if we're really lucky hopefully Bayonetta 2 as well (but I doubt it unless it's late Q4)

I haven't picked up a Wii U yet though, but hey, if I can put up with Shenmue and Skyrim's load times, how bad could this possibly be?
Considering I've been playing Video Games since I was 3 years old, I'm still pretty terrible at them

No love for Pikmin 3?
...

Also, even if Nintendo doesn't directly come forward and say they are working on the loading speeds, I'm pretty sure we can assume that they are.

its true....there are no system sellers out right now......and it honestly looks like there wont be any till late summer or christmas season 2013....thats a long wait....hopefully nintendo can pad the time in between with some decent stuff...hopefully they release a couple HD remakes in there somewhere before christmas season 2013

we'll probably get a 3d mario.....maybe smash bros...although that will likely be delayed to first quarter of 2014 if it is indeed announced for this year

I'm comparing to the 360 myself, where bringing up a list of friends or the current download takes a second or two after hitting the A button to select it. The OS for that has arguably become a lot more complex over time too, incorporating voice and movement navigation along with many additional features, working on the same old hardware as well as new hardware. This is especially when you compare the old, original blade style OS to the current Kinect Friendly OS.

I feel too that the 3DS's menus are a tad slow. See someone come online and want to see if they're playing Mario Kart online? Gotta wait to head back to the main menu, then load up the Friend List, which all in all takes a fair amount of time before you're back in the game either continuing on or heading to the online mode.

It somewhat discourages the player from using these features too often, though I do appreciate that simply hitting the HOME key lists the person who just came online at the top so that's something I guess.

I have the opinion that players would use Miiverse to post screenshots and what not more for games without native Miiverse support (such as NSMBU or Nintendo Land) due to the time taken to do so.

Don't get me wrong, I'm overall very pleased with the console and it's getting prime time very regularly, but this for me is the #1 area that lets it down.
