THQ - Call of Duty has stamped out memories of great first-person shooters

“I think it’s probably very true to say that there’s reaction to what used to be a small subset of the genre of a military shooter, which has ballooned and mushroom-clouded to almost define the genre, and kind of stamp out memories of what I remember being great about first person shooters, whether that was Half Life, System Shock or GoldenEye – where a first person shooter didn’t necessarily have to involve military material, it just meant an invitation to a fantastic other world, which to me was always the point of video games in the first place.” - THQ’s head of global communications Huw Beynon

I do have to admit that I've been bored with military FPS titles for years now. Let's hope other devs are feeling the same way.

I'm starting to respect a lot of THQ official's opinions on gaming. As I agree with a ton of them. Their business practices sometimes leaves me confused regardless.

That's just your opinion. You could say that about any game if it got popular enough and basically changed how the genre worked. It seems like everyone likes to pick on Call of Duty. I just don't like the idea of war or the military. I've only played a little bit of the game. I'm still looking for new fresh shooter that's very inviting and I haven't found that yet. It doesn't have to involve war or science fiction. It just has to be fun.

I was playing Doom (the original, though its the recent "Doom 3 BFG Edition" port). I miss the days of puzzle style maps instead of the current "corridor" style maps :(
