Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - framerate test

Postby Cloud_Mario » 25 Dec 2012 19:45

I've always been satisfied so long as the framerate stays consistent throughout the game. What was the framerate on the Wii version? Anyone remember?

MH Tri had some bad FPS drops, when you played against two or more Monsters on little space.
If the FPS does not drop below 30 FPS meh, it could be worse.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - framerate test

Postby Hamr » 25 Dec 2012 20:22

Knew it. Mostly stable around 38 FPS is still significantly better than mostly stable around 30 FPS, but no way is it close to the 60 fps that some people were claiming due to that one PR rep.

@Cloud_Mario

Vanilla Tri was 30 fps most of the time, even in instances where you had to fight two big monsters at once.

During more crowded fights, like the killing fifty jaggia quest, things got pretty atrocious pretty fast tho. I expect that quest and others like it to stink just as hard in Ultimate. Fortunately, those encounters should still be in the vast minority.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - framerate test

I expected 60 fps for a 2 generations behind game.
Oh well at least it is 1080p.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - framerate test

Postby Autosaver » 25 Dec 2012 20:45

Why isn't this 60FPS? The game is basically a port with some update graphics. It isn't really jawbreaking.

Then again, it is in 1080p and 32+FPS. The original was less than 480p and had a 30FPS with some small dips.

Looks OK. Just hope the animations are smooth and if the framerate truly doesn't go bellow 37-ish it's ok. I will be getting this anyway! :)Loved Tri even with it's flaws.

Maybe I'm losing it but didn't a dev confirm it to run at a rock solid 60fps?

Lame, but irrelevant. It's Monster Hunter. Nobody should care.

@bomblord

"Maybe I'm losing it but didn't a dev confirm it to run at a rock solid 60fps?"

A dev? No.

"It also appeared that the game was running at a constant 60 frames per second, which the PR rep verified."

This is how I imagine that conversation went.

Joystiq guy: Whoa, that looks like 60 fps! *does not actually know what 60 fps looks like*
Hey, does this run at 60 fps?

Random Capcom PR person: *has no idea what that means* Uh, sure. Let's go with that.

Joystiq guy: 60 FPS CONFIRMED!

Games journalism, everybody.

A Wii/3DS up port that can't run at 60fps? No thank you.

Sloppy work is the only excuse for this.

Yes! So true.

32 to 42 fps with vsync is pretty decent considering true 1080p. I wonder what the 3DS version will be like. The Wii U version is pushing a whopping 21.6 times as many pixels as the 3DS one (not to mention the Wii U Gamepad has 5.33 times as many pixels as the second screen on the 3DS). That's on top of any higher res textures, higher quality poly meshes, better filtering and other effects, etc.

Really not sure what the issue is here keeping it from running at 60. The 3DS version actually does run at 60fps, even in 3D. Wii U is far more powerful than either Wii or 3DS, it shouldn't have a problem with 60fps even at a full 1080p (and besides the texture quality and resolution, the graphics are the same as 3DS).

Of course these are also the same guys who tried to take a trailer of the same game from youtube and measure the framerate. Youtube caps its videos at 25-30fps and so of course they were going to see max framerates in a capped video. No telling whether they measured this right after that huge screwup last time...

I'm getting the game regardless if its 60 FPS. I like MH, so I'll be picking this up.

There are ports of PS2 games on the PS360 (ZOE specifically) that have all sorts of frame rate issues. This fantasy that more powerful systems should be able to run older games at 1080p 60 FPS without an issue needs to die.

Certain systems are better at certain things. That means that newer systems that appear to be more powerful overall may actually chug on older games if they played to certain strengths in those older systems that the newer systems either completely ignore or bypass all together.
