Pokemon Company talks Pokemon X/Y - not a reboot, going 3D, design and more

The following comments come from Pokemon Company International director of consumer marketing J.C. Smith...

On calling Pokemon X/Y a reboot for the franchise...

"There's never been a conscious decision to reboot. There's always been an evolution of the look and feel; it just happens to be that we played Black and White, and Heart Gold and Soul Silver, and Diamond and Pearl, and Platinum — all of those games on the same platform. So it feels like it's been a long time in the same way. But between the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color, and moving up into the DS now, it's always had that change."

- Game Freak has worked on ideas for X/Y during the development of previous Pokemon games
- focus on X/Y happened after Black/White 2 launched

On going 3D...

"This game has been a long time coming. Obviously, Game Freak wanted to make sure that when they created this new universe on the 3DS, that it looked fantastic; both in the polygonal style and also when people are able to see the 3D effects as well. It's really exciting to see the Pokemon come to life a little more. They're always working hard to make sure the games are as slick and polished as possible. But with the new expression of that game — they've had the DS for three generations of games now, so I'm sure it took some getting used to to fully utilize the 3DS. But even in this early stage of development, it's looking really cool."

On the new design choices...

"[Pokemon series producer and director Junichi] Masuda is still working on this project, and has been working on Pokemon games since the beginning. Moving to the new platform and having a new look and feel they decided that they wanted to pursue, just opened up their ideas to doing something a little different."

On bringing in new Pokemon alongside the old...

"It's unique. Everyone has their favorites, and sometimes a new one will pop up that makes it into their top ten. But I think that's what keeps Pokemon interesting, is that you can still encounter your favorites while still finding new Pokemon, while finding new things in the game."

On worldwide launch...

"We wanted to make sure, and Game Freak wanted to make sure, that everyone in the world could start trading, start battling, start communicating right from the beginning. It was never perfect when we had that lag. It's certainly nice to have people at the same place. People who pick up the game on day one in Japan, and day one on the U.S. can start developing their teams quickly, and can start training and battling and have it be a little more fair."

I do hope the overworld is improved visually. I was hoping it would look at least as good as OOT 3D. It looks more like a 3DS/DS hybrid. Also the trainers look creepy waiting for you in 3D

I still really hope there will be closer to 150 Pkmn than 100. The new Pkmn are always the big thing for me~

Also, Serebii, if you have time/want to, please tell me, which of the Three New Starters if your favorite? You have the main Pkmn site for me, so I'm very interested~ ^^

Great answer, because I think so too. Thank you for wasting your time to answer. XD

Now, the waiting game for the evolutions. Only 10 months left~

Um...yeah... about that... I don't think that happened. Outside of the battle graphics, I'm not sure how in the world these graphics could be considered "fantastic", much less "polished".

@Radiant

This is still in the early stages of development. Give it a little bit more development time before you judge it. It is still 10 months away and they can do a lot in that time.

I was a never a huge Pokemon fan but the transition to 3D does intrigue me and I wouldn't mind starting with this game. I played Diamond and hated it found it so boring....hopefully the transition to 3D will change my perspective on the series. (I like the spin-offs more than the main RPG series).
Finally got a PS3 sooo add me if you want. :)

Who is calling these games a reboot? Very glad they are finally going the 3D route and launching worldwide at the same time. Very excited for Pokemon X/Y!

I'll only believe that when I see it. Graphical changes throughout the part of a game's development that is visible to us are rarely very substantial (there are exceptions, but they tend to be for games that are shown long before they are released and don't even have titles yet. Pokemon X and Y are clearly well on their way through development).

Besides the fact that they think that this is already "fantastic" and "polished" says a lot. Clearly, they aren't setting their standards very high. They're setting them at DS level.

Guys, wait to see it in 3d. KI:U screens also look bad outside of the 3ds.

@Zaakro I doubt they would do much with it. What you see here is more or less what you will probably see at launch, minus obvious frame rate and content changes. When some people cried foul for the first couple black and white screen shots, we pretty much got the moving version of what it looked like.

I think that there was a missed opportunity with the overworld graphics.

This was their chance to take what they tried to do in Black and White, accentuate the classic sprite work with polygonal buildings and whatnot, but actually do it with hardware that can render something that doesn't look completely out of place. That could have been a very cool style choice if they pulled it off right; a retro-modern mix, featuring detailed sprites and polished polygonal models.

Instead they dumped everything into a rudimentary 3D engine. Instead of improving or dropping the style it's like they just decided to drag the entire environment down to the level of their DS polygonal models. Ugh.

you kids seem to be forgetting that the transition is hard for long time players and making the full 3D jump would have scared alot of the old fans away. is a good hybrid as it seems.

3D only makes the graphics look worse, if anything. KI:U always suffered from a lot of jagged edges in its screenshots; however, the graphics were naturally of a much higher quality that could not even remotely be seen as having been done on the DS. This is not the case with Pokemon X/Y at all.

Um... I'm a long-time player. I have been playing since 1999, and have played at least one version of ever main Pokemon game released.

This is the very same kind of argument that would have never allowed for games like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time to be made. If Ocarina of Time had the 2.5D design of Phantom Hourglass, we wouldn't be talking about it. I guarantee you of that.

You know… I was expecting Pokemon Colosseum/XD-like graphics from this game but instead we got trainers who look like they came from My Sims Wii. :|

I'm not expecting the final game when released to look any different…
