Uggghhhh...headache all day. Not one of those regular headaches, but the kind that makes your neck hurt as well. It always happens when I don't sleep normally. I was tossing/turning a lot last night, which left me a bit stiff today. I hope I can get back to normal after tonight's shut-eye. See you in a few, short hours!

Looks like there's a major shake-up over at Nintendo. It's funny how Nintendo always seems to sneak out big news without anyone suspecting a thing. We might know that some sort of reveal for a franchise is on the way, but the Big N still manages to hold many of their cards close to their chest. This time around, the surprise was an internal shift instead of a game reveal.

Nintendo is going to bring together their console and portable dev teams. This is the first major restructuring that Nintendo has seen since 2004. Of course, hindsight is 20/20. We all knew that Nintendo was building a new office for themselves, but we never realized that an internal shift was going to be one of the main motivators for the creation of this space.

There's no doubt that Nintendo has been talking about this move for quite some time. They've only just announced it now, but the shift goes into effect this February. It seems like the plan is to have the teams work together in order to birth some connectivity ideas between Wii U and 3DS. This is an idea many of us have been hoping for!

Nintendo has already said that they'd like to allow gamers to play a game on the Wii U and continue on 3DS, or use the 3DS as a Wii U controller in general. If Nintendo is just saying this now, you can bet some ideas are already in the working prototype stage internally. Could we end up seeing some of these ideas unveiled at E3 this year?

What would you like to see Nintendo do with the pairing of the 3DS and Wii U? What's your dream game and scenario? Leave a comment and fill us in!

Wait this is the first ive heard of this, but that is a rather interesting turn of events. The possibilities are indeed quite infinite, ive already got a few swimming around in my head at the moment.

I'm more wondering what this will mean for the next generation of console and handheld. Is it going to be like a handheld you plug into the TV to play at home, or a console that comes with a handheld to take with you. The WiiU may be just the beginnings of an idea like this. Or maybe nothing will happen, and we will still get separate consoles and handhelds, just with better connectivity. It could be good for multiplayer games on Wii U so more than one person could have their own screen, maybe something like Crystal Chronicles.

I'm not sure the new building is only for hardware R&D. If they were just bringing the two teams together, why would they need such a big building ? I think there is a bigger restructuration going on (with Miyamoto working on smaller project, etc...). Nintendo spending on R&D increased by a lot over the last few years. It's probably for WiiU tech, but hopefully also for SW.

As for next console/handhelds, there are two scenarios :

- the two will work closely together (one handheld, that can be used like a gamepad, but with dedicated SW)
- only one console, (one gamepad), with a pico-projector for big screen gaming... dunno :)

This sounds like very good news. I haven't been shy about expressing my dissatisfaction with Nintendo lately. It seems like they just can't keep up, so perhaps a restructuring is exactly what they need.

Since the GBA days I have wanted a home console Pokémon game, where I can send my character and his Pokémon to continue there adventures. It can be a totally different location, as long as its a full featured Pokémon game.

This is exciting! I have wanted this ever since I heard the specifics of the Wii U and Gamepad, I said it sounded like a large 3DS split in half. I would love to be able to play new (or even re-released) versions of Chrystal Chronicles and Four Swords. Or a brand new series from Miyamoto that takes the multi-screen gameplay to whole new levels.
Something else I would like would be the ability to stream 3DS games to the TV. At least the top screen. I have trouble showing people what I'm playing on the 3DS small screens.

Also this ^ But not only Virtual Console, I'd love it if everything was able to be swapped back and forth.

too soon for E3 2013, unless they come up with eShop games they want to show. i suspect we will get a nintendo direct after the summer dedicated to showcasing some of the games they come up with. E3 2014 should have more on this.

dragon quest x crossplay

cross compatible text editor, image gallery, email, and e-reader (doc, text, large pdf with images, popular ebook formats, electronic library book checkout format) apps for both consoles that can also integrate with friends or anyone via web. maybe with google docs/google drive compatibility for text files.

mario paint styled music composer that uses actual classic sound fonts from nintendo, square enix, etc as well as support for user made fonts and with large and always growing library of songs and fonts/fx available as DLC. but must be open and allow users to exchange and use their own sound fonts and songs.

Universal accounts are something really obvious that they should do to start with. Add in a universal collection of accomplishments while you're at it. As for game connectivity, I don't know, I've no idea the extent to which the two can be connected. For example, as a controller for the Wii U, wouldn't it just be inconvenient on a much smaller and lower res screen compared to the Game Pad, not to mention missing buttons? Would there have to be some new supped up 3DS on the way at some point (along with dual circle pads, and ZR and ZL) for it to work well? Or perhaps the 3DS could just be used as a complement to a Wii U game, like the GBA was used in Wind Waker. Some crossplay of online games might be a possibility too. Unified and actual accounts with synergistic features are a must, but who knows what else. I'm sure Nintendo will be able to figure some cool things out.

real accounts. universal achievements. Unified VC, etc, etc. You know, all the stuff they will never do.

what this tells me more than anything, is that they want to make their next system portable only. maybe hooks up to a TV at home. And this is the first step in reducing overhead(people's salaries).

what they really need is a shake up from top to bottom if they want to survive long term.

Wonder how many people will get canned due to redundancy.

I personally Nintendo needs to do more than build a new building and shuffle people around if they want to survive the next several years. The industry is changing and Nintendo's always one of the last ones to change with it (optical media, online play, HD graphics, etc)

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Oh, the possibilities...

How would you play your Wii U game on a 3DS when Wii U is so much more powerful than a 3DS?

I don't want developers to have to think about things like this. Oh so now we gotta make sure anythign we do will also function on a 3DS in case the idiot gamer feels like they should be able to play this Wii U game on their 3DS? Bleh.

Just keep handheld and home console gaming apart - as they SHOULD be. This is one of the reasons I hate Wii U. I don't want to play my home console games on a small screen.

As for connectivity between Wii U and 3DS they already tried this with GBA and Gamecube and it never really amounted to anything.

as demonstrated by how those incredible investments panned out for social gaming in 2012 , or was it mobile gaming ? (hint : big crashes)
lol changing industry that added after nintendo did it : dpad , shoulder button , diamond shape button , default four controllers , analog stick , rumble(heavier different patent), badly 3d motion gaming (kinect), pattern pose gaming( just dance central), laggy body gaming(kinect vs bboard) , laggy pointer (move, kinect), two hand controllers, gyro moving screen aiming, laggy two screens gaming (vita router ps3), second screen info (smartglass), and free online oh wait they can't do the last one , obviously it's worth 300$ bucks to play online for five years but how nintendo dare charge 0.5 to check for parental controls .
It's mostly to reassure investors and so on , nothing is going to truly changed. The 3ds doesn't have any competition , is the japanese industry . The wii u could use some publicity from that . The gyro in the 3ds comes from battle quest after Miyamoto probably saw how fun it's to aim arrow with the wind blowing .... but yeah aiming in modern games is "quick snipping" what a joke

they could use a cartridge to use the full power of wii u to make incredibly good looking 3ds game with 3d !

Is the WiiU tormenting you or something?

I agree on the other parts though. The WiiU is way stronger than the 3DS. And a handheld should be a handheld as a console should be a console. BUT I would like to see them connect more than they do now! But not like the PS3 and Vita! The charm with handheld games is that they are handheld. That is, for me, why the PSP and Vita get boring since they try to be like stationary consoles in handheld form.

No one is saying the 3DS could play Wii U games. They are saying more cases like Monster Hunter, and the possibility of streaming to the 3DS from the Wii U. The 3DS needs no processor for that, so it could easily be used for control in Wii U games, or even off tv play.

Well yeah but that was more because you had to buy the game(or in some cases games) and the link cables and have both systems. It added up really fast. but now the tech has improved (no more link cables). So I say let Nintendo experiment a little. I certainly don't think every game needs a WiiU/3DS link feature but the idea of another Four Sword-esuqe game excites me.

Really? Seems to me Nintendo was the one instituting the biggest changes over the last console cycle with an added emphasis on motion and touch control gaming as well as the blue ocean strategy to get non-gamers to pick up a control. I guess it's how you look at it.
Any objections lady?

Calling it: The next generation of Nintendo- after Wii U and 3DS- won't be a portable or a home console, it'll be both. You could use it as a portable system, but it would also act as a Wii U style controller. Some games will be only for the portable portion, other parts just the console, while other ones will be able to work for both or have some other type of connectivity, like having a mini-game on one that can help you out in the other.

And, through wi-fi, it'd be possible to play your friend who's wasting time on a vacation somewhere even if you are sitting at home playing on your console.

I don't foresee that being an issue. This isn't just a development philosophy shift but also an economical one. It allows for more cross development, not just for game ideas but for game resources as well. Having the same people working on game resources for both Wii U and 3DS games at the same time will surely speed up development. I think that's really more of what's going on. Sure the connectivity features are going to be great but the money and time they're going to save because of this will be far greater in the long run.

As for Nintendo not changing with the times? Optical was a technological stop-gap. It's already on it's way out while physical is making a resurgence. And that includes digital as it requires physical to work. Online is a bigger "gimmick" than motion control. And HD is just a resolution change. Being in HD or standard or 4K or whatever makes no difference in how a game plays or even really looks.

And if Nintendo's in trouble, what with having the biggest and highest selling franchise in video gaming EVER, then where would you say that Sony, MS, and most 3rd parties are sitting? You know, all those other guys that make far less money on gaming than Nintendo, if any at all? In the end, Nintendo makes money and that is enough to keep them in gaming since gaming is all that they do. Even if the Wii U only sells around the same amount as the GC they'll still be around for another generation. Could you say the same for Sony or MS?

I know I'm in a very small minority, but I used the link cable for GBA-Gamecube games a TON! I loved playing Windwaker with my brother on the Tingle Tuner. 4 Swords was amazing! I even had the E-Reader on my GBA hooked up to Animal Crossing and got exclusive gifts and patterns. I have been waiting for good connectivity on consoles since.

The only one I can think of on the Wii was Pokemon Battle Rev. It was fun, but it wasn't as expansive as even some of the other Stadium games. It was really a glorified battler for Gen IV pokemon with friends.

Now that we are moving on and getting more connectivity, I want a new Zelda with cross-platform connectivity! I want the third Pokemon version (presumably Pokemon Z) to be on the Wii U so I can transfer my pokemon over and have a real 3D adventure! I want a Mario Party that uses the gamepad and multiple 3ds's! I want to bring my Animal Crossing characters into the home console version on the WiiU. (Imagine using the 3DS as a second controller/screen so you could visit a friend's village on the WiiU but still be able to go wherever you want in that world).

I know this is a crazy, unlikely wishlist, but I hope Nintendo gets the idea of inter-connected gameplay in this new console generation. I've loved it in the past, but I want to love it even more in the future. I want Nintendo to wow me!

I think it's just a logical step. The Wii U console already has all kinds on handheld technology on board. No need anymore for a separate team that does only that.
