Iwata recommends digital purchase of Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Iwata I'd like to conclude this interview with a few words of my own. Animal Crossing is a game that I hope people will play throughout the whole year. But we want people to play other games too. So something I would recommend is the digital download version. I think a title like Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which you can play throughout the year, is ideally suited to this format. That makes me sound a little like a salesman, doesn't it? (laughs) - Satoru Iwata

Pretty much everyone is singing the praises of the digital version of New Leaf. It just makes sense for the type of game it is. Which version will you go with?

Of course they would. It's pure profit for them and you don't get to get rid of it if you get tired of the game.

Nice try, but I will personally endeavor to inconvenience companies that say things like this at every possible opportunity.

Iwata recommends digital purchase of Animal Crossing: New Le

Postby The_King_Up_North » 08 Jun 2013 14:46

I would if Nintendo had an account based system. As it is, it's too risky to digitally buy a regularly priced game. But if it was $10 on the eShop and $40 in store, obviously I'd go for the eShop deal, but that clearly won't ever happen, so accounts is what I'm waiting for.

I already have it pre-ordered from GameStop, so I'll stick to that.

As convenient as it would be having the digital version, I'm still going with the cartridge. I refuse to buy anything digital from Nintendo until they fix their backwards account settings. The amount of hoops you need to jump through in case you need to replace eshop games is absurd.

I have the requirements to get a free 3DS title download from the eShop. AC:NL is one of the options.* :)

*A list of 8, register 3 of them with Club Nintendo and get a fourth one for free. I have four of them. (Castlevania, Luigi's Mansion 2, DKC Returns and recently bought Fire Emblem Awakening. And loving it.) What a way to christen a new 32 gb SD Card, eh?

I'll bite with the digital release but only because I'm getting the code for a nice discount. Someone didn't want there free game cause they're a retail only gamer. So i'll be taking it off them for 5 quid.

Then I recommend creating an account system to protect the consumer.

And charge less for download versions because they cost less to produce and the consumer takes a much bigger risk with no ability to sell the game.

Do those things Mr. Iwata and I'll buy the game (and many games) via the eShop.

@bellboy

Yeah, I really wish we got that deal here in the US. I'd qualify for it, if we did.

On topic: No thanks. I'm not paying full price for a download that has no box, packaging, or real ownership, for that matter.

Iwata recommends digital purchase of Animal Crossing: New Le

Postby MAGNUS-8M » 08 Jun 2013 14:59

I actually feel that it would be best for games like AC:NL to be digital.. that's the one thing I hate about those types of games, is that I feel like if I have to constantly be playing it, I'm either going to neglect other games and feel obligated to only have that one put in, or I finally get bored of playing it every day and put it aside indefinitely, only to trade it back in and regret it later. Having the digital version kind of solves both of those problems, even if I'd rather have the right to trade back in later... eh. In a way I've kind of adopted RMC's idea of not wanting to regret taking games back anymore, so I haven't really even done that for quite a while now anyway.

Digital for me. Solely because I'm too lazy to go to my GameStop. Plus, I already have the $38 (tax included) I need to get it in the eShop.

I'm just going to ignore the first few posters... Don't make me feel bad.

Wow, you guys clearly don't know how easy it is to do a digial download. It doesn't get lost as easily as people think (If you lose the system, it's YOUR fault. You don't get a Pet like a dog or cat for free if you have that stolen or lost), and it's really simple.

And discounting the game? The game is the same both ways, and the manuals nowadays aren't even worth reading.

Getting digital x4. 1 for me, and 1 for each of my 3 girls. Rather have the game constantly available on the system because it is one of those games you'll want to jump in frequently without having to worry with the card. And my little girls would probably loose their cards within a few days. Digital is the way to go. Even though it is same price as the retail version, that doesn't bother me. As a software developer myself, it is more about paying for all of the hard work (sweat and tears) the developers had to go through to make the game. The packaging is incidental. And.. $35+tax is pretty cheap for a game that is going to be used throughout the year(s) unlike many other games costing more than get old in just a few hours of play. :D

Iwata recommends digital purchase of Animal Crossing: New Le

Postby jraics » 08 Jun 2013 15:18

@TheDreamingHawk

You're wrong on so many different levels, and are totally missing the true ownership point, as well as the savings that these companies have by cutting out large portions of the supply chain, which they refuse to pass on or at least split with the consumer. They don't have to pay for: boxes, cartrigdes, boxart, packaging, storage facilities, transportation, insurance for said transportation, etc.

Iwata recommends digital purchase of Animal Crossing: New Le

Postby ShivUK » 08 Jun 2013 15:20

So I'm looking at the game on the eShop over here and it's £35. Looking at it on Amazon, it's there for £28; 20% less than on the eShop.

This makes it very, very unappealing to buy the digital version. It makes it feel like Nintendo are trying to pull a fast one on you as a consumer. Sure, it's more convenient in some ways but it's pretty inconvenient in others.

In reality I'm probably not very likely to sell any games I buy but the added inconvenience of not being able to lend the game (or give it away) if I wanted to is massive.

As has been said before, the digital version should cost less, not more.

Physical is cool for collectors and all but they are still the same content wise. I wouldn't be surprised if it costs MORE to make than it is to buy.

Old habits die hard and I love a bookshelf full of games, so I'll stick with the retail version.
