I'm still surprised that this didn't use the NFC reader on the GamePad, but I guess it's because Activision wants to keep selling the Portal of Power.

I was thinking that too, but in this case, the toy has to remain on the NFC portal to be active. The only other way to utilize the NFC reader would be for credit cards.
