Recently, a fan of WayForward let them know that he thinks the company would be great for a new Metroid game. WayForward obviously would love the chance to work on that property. WayForward then suggested that a petition might be the way to go, but with a tongue-in-cheek approach that petitions don't usually change much.

WayForward would love to work on Metroid

Postby LegendofSantiago » 16 Nov 2012 16:17

I think they could do it, but I think it would be smart to do it in a metroid fusion/prime situation where Nintendo at least announced a main 3D game and wayforwards works on this for the 3DS

Agreed... At a Super Metroid level, it was dark, moody with graphics and sound.

I picture them doing an awesome Metroid game on the vein of the classic 2D side scrollers, where the characters are all done in the flash style used in Mighty Switch Force, not the super cartoony character look...just how the characters look like cartoon characters, just also look more serious and still very well animated. I think of a few series I'd like them tackle...like Kid Icarus. I think Nintendo should add Wayforward to the group of developers that are trusted to making games based on Nintendo franchises and characters...think they could offer a new fresh look to many of them.

WayForward can do any classic franchise in my opinion. Love that company.

Heck, give them Mega Man. I'd like to see their sprite work with the classic series.

WayForward would love to work on Metroid

Postby lockNES » 16 Nov 2012 17:06

I love Wayforward's animation teams. From the way they do pixel art to the way they do hand drawn art, they are top notch. A Wayforward game can practically sell me on the animation alone, and in some cases it has.

It also seems that they take great care in handling licenses. Contra 4 was a spot-on return for the series. I didn't play Boy and his Blob but it looked like they brought it back better than I would have imagined it could have been done. I remember RMC had a glowing review of Aliens: Infestation on the DS a while back.

A 2D Metroid by a developer outside of Japan seems unlikely (besides Retro of course) but Wayforward is a team I'd definitely like to see give it a shot.

WayForward would love to work on Metroid

Postby Hamr » 16 Nov 2012 17:18

Eh, no thanks. Metroid is going to need a lot of talent to get out of the eight-year slump it has fallen into, and Wayforward's action output has to-date never failed to underwhelm.

Just because Other M wasn't received favorably, why do people feel the need for an outside developer to make a new 2d game? Fusion and Zero Mission were awesome. Sakamoto and SPD should be allowed to make Metroid 5.

Well, you know, Nintendo STILL has its own studios!

WTH is with every other developer saying they want to develop games from Nintendo franchises?
Leave something to Nintendo, too, will you?

Hell no. I'll personally hunt down Sakamoto the day WayForward has anything in the slightest to do with the Metroid franchise.

That's what happens when you have a longstanding, rabid fanbase. These people get so used to hearing their own voice echo that they start to think they think it's the only opinion, and that opinion somehow escalates to fact.

Zelda's been going through it as well; ever since Twilight Princess came out, people have been begging Retro to make a Zelda game (and every other Nintendo franchise ever). When Skyward Sword came out, the crazies somehow got crazier, and we had to suffer as people prattled on about how Zelda needed to be "saved" from Aonuma.

Of course, I'm not *opposed* to WayForward making a Metroid game. I'm actually curious to see if they could pull it off.

they are a talented bunch with a great appreciation of 2d sprites and animation . I don't think metroid is really the way to go , how about another contra (with easier difficulty please )

WayForward would love to work on Metroid

Postby Johnknight1 » 16 Nov 2012 21:35

Hell no. They need to make good games consistently. Metroid IMO is Nintendo's highest quality (per average) franchise. Seriously, the worst games (the pinball spin-off aside) in the series are the original, Metroid II, Metroid Hunters, and Other M. All of those are very good games.

Really, I think Metroid should stick with the staff that made Super Metroid/Metroid Fusion and Retro Studios. If Nintendo was smart, and they are, they should keep continuing to grow Retro Studios so they can make 2 games at once. Imagine them making Metroid and Zelda at the same time! o.O

No, the reason people hate Other M (and Team Ninja) is because Team Ninja (like a fair share of Japan) is sexist, they wrote an awful script, and that game was nothing compared to the Metroid Prime trilogy that came before it. We've become accustomed to Metroid being held to a standard that few video game franchises could claim to ever being held to.

...I didn't say anything about why people hate Other M. But no, people hate Other M because they like to hear the sounds of their own outraged voices and think their sh*t don't stink. Other M has a solid framework for translating Metroid into 3D 3rd person gameplay and is much more faithful to the series in that respect than any of the Primes. Its problem is it has weak writing and weak characterization, and they tried to give a soft core to a character that's been mostly devoid of personality but kicking galactic ass for over 20 years and they didn't quite pull it off.

Very few people seem to be able to have a rational discussion about Other M's strength's and weaknesses; it usually devolves into internet hyperbole spinning a grand tale about how Team Ninja and Sakamoto in particular are these cartoonishly evil misogynists using Samus Aran as a weapon to destroy women all over the world. I see unfortunate implications and casual, probably ignorant portrayals of both women and minorities in this game...but I don't see malicious, misogynistic intent to assassinate Samus's character. The best part about the internet crusaders is that there is and always has been a hell of a lot of misogyny in gaming, and that's worth fighting against. But even if Other M was supposed to be the evil thing they scream about so loudly, it's still no where near the core of the problem. Warring against an absent Sakamoto and Metroid over the likes of Soulcalibur, PS1 era Tomb Raider or any fantasy game where the female warrior has no choice but to wear 2 strand of thread and some armor on her shoulders shows just how much spine these internet crusaders really have.
