We know that the day-one Wii U update is a whopper. It takes quite a bit of time to download. We've also heard that it's around 5 gigs worth of data. Thanks to our friends at Nintendo Gamer, we know that not to be true. Check out this data usage image below, which represents the amount of data transfer roughly halfway through the download process.

Certainly closer to 1 gig than 5, but still a beefy download. Just make sure you set aside the appropriate time to download this necessary update.

thanks to the hilarious bad faith of some , i now think one gig is not a big deal . In any case , IF the wii u gather some modicum of support from third parties for the entire generation , those frequent updates of things should really be the norm . I just can't remember a time without updates on both 360 and ps3.

It's Nintendo, so of course it gets blown out of proportion...

Honestly if it was 5 gigs, it would've taken way longer than an hour on my slow connection.

@redhatdrawler This.

Has any PS360 system [or game] update ever been worth 5GBs...?

Wii U day-one update closer to 1 gig than 5 gigs

Postby Nin2000 » 20 Nov 2012 05:56

Given the highest internet connection speeds in australia are 10 times slower than the US, I am not looking forward to buying a new console that requires a download which could take hours and hours before it is fully functional. Oh, and it will probably auto switch off after one hour during the download so the system would end up bricked and unusable.

The system switches off said function [which you can turn off in Settings anyway] when downloading and installing.
