Dan Hsu: "The Wii U has been set up for failure."

Wow. You held out for two whole days before "Nintendo is teh doomds" rhetoric, game industry. I mean, that's like, 48 hours, which is a LOT of minutes, and even MORE seconds.

It seems that his entire thesis -- post-initial launch -- boils down to Nintendo having moved the buttons on the controller.

Yep, that's it. Hard core players can't adapt, system to fail.

But above everything else, I feel this one design choice will ultimately prove to be the Wii U’s undoing in the long run: The buttons on the controllers are in the wrong place. The hardcore players aren’t going to like that, as I’ll explain in more detail below. And if they’re not buying games on this system, the Wii U will end up a lot like the first Wii: successful in the beginning, collecting dust before its time should be up.

The Toys R Us sale is its current standard software sale of Buy 1, Get 1 at 40% off. It had run the same sale on all software at $50 or below -- including WiiU -- the week before.

And while I don't remember any such sale in 2006, Toys R Us was doing Buy 2 Get 1 Free on Wii games at Christmas 2007 -- when the system still caused major lines at stores.

(As for Target, I looked at mine and the selection was awful).

That was so hilarious and inept on Hsu's part that I actually had to feel a bit bad for him; it was written like he was desperately trying to find something to bitch at so he went for the pettiest complaint he could find.

I don't think it's going to doom the WiiU or whatever, but I've been saying the same thing about that controller. It's not anything like the 360 controller because the only thing that matters nowadays is analog stick placement, and the WiiU's is different. The Classic Controller Pro is more like the PS3 controller and the 360 is more like the Gamecube than the WiiU is like the 360. That being said, the WiiU's controller does look uncomfortable.

having no issues with controller whatsoever, people are just trying to bitch about anything they can to get page hits cause Nintendo PR, for better or worse, sells. Dan Hsu had a nice interview back when the 360 launched bashing the system for its ports and lack of games (he came off a little rude in the interview) and got lots of page hits in return. Just a tried and true formula for many in the interwebz to try and sound relevant. for myself, after loading up the update (50 min to download and install) and cruising through the menus, most of the things people are complaining about are EXTREMELY minor (there are some freeze ups reported but i haven't had any problems) and are things that i'm sure will get cleaned up with upcoming patches. if you're on the fence, wait a year, thats the best advice to see whether a console will take off or fall on its face after launch (Vita). no one really knows how things will turn out, but if history is any indicator, Nintendo will prove it has a rightful place among consoles and in people's homes.

Well, that's the state of the industry these days. Wii was trashed for being less powerful than existing console that came out that year or the year prior. Now we're at the point where WiiU is trashed for being less powerful than consoles that haven't even been announced yet, much less released.
