As we’ve already shared, Director Shiro Mouri and producer Takashi Tezuka are the ones steering the ship for Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Where does that leave Shigeru Miyamoto? In a new interview, we get some more insight into his input on the game, along with one of the complaints he lodged.

In an interview with IGN, Tezuka revealed that Miyamoto does have some involvement with Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but he’s not a day-to-day part of the team. In particular, Tezuka said that Miyamoto would visit the team to check in on their work, and then offer up opinions from time to time. Turns out one element Miyamoto was very vocal about was Elephant Mario.

The Elephant Mario transformation has been a huge hit ever since its reveal, but apparently Miyamoto wasn’t a big fan of its look early on in development. Mouri mentioned that when Miyamoto saw the tentative visuals for Elephant Mario, he said it didn’t look like a Mario character, and he also stated that the water-spraying animation wasn’t up to snuff. Mouri mentioned that the team already had plans to adjust things about Elephant Mario, but Miyamoto’s comments helped steer the direction going forward.”

Miyamoto isn’t just upending teatables, he’s addressing the elephant in the room.

People like it? I'm not sure about that... I don't, but no big deal.
