The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been about as big of a box office success as Nintendo and Universal could have hoped for. The film became the second highest-grossing animated film in cinematic history, and one of the top five highest-grossing movies of the year. That’s an incredible amount of success to achieve, but now Mario and the gang could take home an even bigger accolade.

The 2024 Golden Globe nominations have come out, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been nominated in not one, not two, but three different categories. You can see the categories and competition below.

Best Motion Picture – Animated

  • “The Boy and the Heron”
  • “Elemental”
  • “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”
  • “Suzume”
  • “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”
  • “Wish”

Best Original Song – Motion Picture

  • “Addicted to Romance” by Bruce Springsteen, She Came to Me
  • “Dance the Night” by Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, Dua Lipa and Caroline Ailin, Barbie
  • “I’m Just Ken” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, Barbie
  • “Peaches” by Jack Black, Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Eric Osmond and John Spiker, The Super Mario Bros. Movie
  • “Road to Freedom” by Lenny Kravitz, Rustin
  • “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish, Finneas O’Connell, Barbie

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Picture

  • Barbie
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
  • John Wick: Chapter 4
  • Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1
  • Oppenheimer
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie
  • Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

Mario is up against some stiff competition in both categories, but especially the Best Original Song and Best Motion Picture Animated departments. Battling it out against the likes of “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” in music is going to prove extremely difficult, but not impossible. The same goes for Best Motion Picture Animated, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Boy and the Heron and Suzume seeming like incredibly high bars to hurdle. As for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Picture nomination, I think Mario has a real shot there!

We’ll make sure to bring you the results of the 2024 Golden Globes once they take place on Jan. 7th, 2024.

Thanks to Olivia for the heads up!
