Masahiro Sakurai is back with yet another game development video, and this one fits into the “Design Specifics” category.

One of the biggest hurdles for new gamers is learning the controls when they sit down to play. In this video, Sakurai stresses the importance of teaching players the controls without boring or overwhelming them. He determines that the best method for this is to allow the players to implement the controls in a hands-on way as they’re learning.

In fact, Sakurai says that a mode like this was originally planned for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but had to be cut due to scheduling issues. He also mentions that the ‘Break the Targets’ mode in the original Super Smash Bros. was designed with the intent of teaching players how to use each character. Every player and designer has their preferences, but this is one area Sakurai feels he could improve in for future games.

So... why didn't they bring back the 'Break the Targets' mode in its original form?? I did feel like they helped teach you how to play with those characters, and I always enjoyed completing them, too.
