Thunderful Publishing has released a fiscal report for the year ended Dec. 31st, 2023, and it has some sad news for fans of the SteamWorld franchise.

SteamWorld Build launched on multiple platforms, Switch included, at the start of December 2023. In the four weeks leading to the end of the year, Thunderful has said that the game didn’t sell as many units as they were hoping.

“We are pleased to have new momentum with regard to our most important IP, but sales during December fell slightly short of our expectations. We believe this is because the genre of this game has not really appealed to our most dedicated target audience and it has not been well-suited to the Switch console, which has traditionally been a key platform for SteamWorld games.”

[Thunderful CEO Martin Walfisz]

It seems this slow sales momentum has caused a bit of a domino effect with the SteamWorld franchise, as the studio is now putting SteamWorld Headhunter on hold. To be clear, development on the project has been paused, but it’s not completely dead. Somewhat frustratingly, Walfisz didn’t share specifics on why Headhunter had been put on ice, but hopefully it goes back into production soon.

This is the first time I've heard about SteamWorld Build! Haven't heard any chatter about it...
