Name any other video game movie in existence. Go ahead, pick any of them that have popped up in the existence of cinema. No matter what you choose, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has pulled in more money domestically.

As of today, Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s box office total sits at $146,258,543 in the United States. The film managed that total in just 3 weeks, and that is enough cash to make Sonic the Hedgehog 2 the highest-grossing video game movie ever in the states. That means the previous record-holder, Uncharted, has now been relegated to second place. In turn, this bumps Pokémon Detective Pikachu from second to third place.

With the Super Mario movie pushed to Spring 2023, Sonic will have a whole year to enjoy this record. Will everyone’s favorite plumber be able to dethrone the Blue Blur? We’ve got a whole year to debate that!

We maaaay be overstating the significance of the Mario movie. So what if it doesn't become #1? Mario isn't even in the #1 Nintendo-published mobile game (losing to Fire Emblem of all things). He's the top selling game series on dedicated hardware, and there's little else he needs to prove. Sonic can keep this win--he certainly needs it more.

The Mario film MUST overcome this or I fear Nintendo will shut down projects and not try for another 2 decades.
