Don't expect Cole Young to appear in Mortal Kombat 1, says dev

There have been a ton of characters in the Mortal Kombat franchise over the years, and one of them is Cole Young. The thing is, Cole has never been in a Mortal Kombat game. Instead, he comes from the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, and it sounds like that’s where he’s going to stay.
NetherRealm recently revealed Mortal Kombat 1, which is a restart for the iconic franchise. It’s going to bring back fan-favorite characters and fresh faces, but Cole Young won’t be joining the cast.
According to a Comicbook.com interview with NetherRealm’s Lead Systems Designer Derek Kirtzic, the dev team behind Mortal Kombat 1 is leaving the characters of the Mortal Kombat movie to the cinematic side of things. In other words, the only chance you’ll get of seeing more Cole is on the big screen.

Good. An original character was never needed in the movie to begin with. Such a strange choice when MK already has so many iconic characters. Nothing against the actor. Maybe he should have portrayed Johnny Cage instead.

Hahaha! I was literally going to start my comment the same way - "Good, ..." I saw that movie, and the new character was by far the worst part. In contrast, Liu Kang and Kung Lao were the best part; it should have just been based around them. Hollywood logic is idiotic.

10M agoI’ll offer the counterpoint. I watched the movie, wondering which of all the beloved MK characters would unfortunately be the focal point of the movie plot. Or perhaps they would repeat the mistake of the original 90’s movie and try to focus on ALL the characters at once.
Instead, this Cole character gave the story a way to follow a generic nobody and observe the MK universe from an outsider perspective. I loved it and thought it worked really well for the film. Now, does this mean Cole Young needs to be in MK 1? Of course not. The point of having him in the movie was to allow the other characters to equally play a role in the plot. He would bring nothing to the game.

10M agoEven though I don't care for Cole, it'd be funny to see some kind of cameo or mention in the game, like as a character in the background getting beaten up or something.
