When rumors of a new Mortal Kombat game were rumbling, many wondered if the game would make its way to Switch. Mortal Kombat 11 got the Switch treatment, but with the next installment potentially putting a big focus on PS5/XSX, many thought Switch would be left in the dust.

Fast-forward to Mortal Kombat 1’s reveal, and we saw that the game is indeed heading the Switch’s way. We’re yet to see what what the Switch version looks like in any way, shape or form just yet, but you’d expect it to measure favorably to Mortal Kombat 11 before it.

What we have learned is that NetherRealm isn’t going to be doing the heavy lifting on the Switch version. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Derek Kirtzic, who is the Lead Systems Designer at NetherRealm, said it’ll be their studio partners that tackle the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1. This lines up with what happened with Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch as well.

So we don’t work closely with the Switch version. Obviously, we’ll look at it, we’ll review it. But we have that with our outsourcing groups, same as we did with MK11. And MK11 felt good. It played great on Switch. And again, it’s for us to make sure that it’s a quality product for the users, the people that purchase it a hundred percent all the time.

The developers who are bringing Mortal Kombat 1 to Switch include Shiver Entertainment, who handled Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch, alongside Saber Interactive, who have tackled countless Switch ports over the years.

I recall with Mortal Kombat 11, it took far too long to actually get screenshots and video of the Switch version, and I hope they don't repeat that. Right up until release they were being pretty hush-hush and even in the eShop listing the screenshots they used were clearly not taken from the Switch version. They've since removed the screenshots and replaced them with CGI trailers.
