New Feature: Customizable News Filters

Control of the firehose of news is in your hands

A new site feature has been recently launched that allows you to better tailor your news experience. Are you tired of reading rumors? Want less of a certain analyst in your life? Maybe you really really don't want to see comics from this one place in your feed? Now, you have some control.

While editing your user profile, you will notice a new option on the left menu bar called "Custom Filters."

Clicking on that will bring you to a form where you can customize your news experience while logged in. You can have the main page filter by categories, tags, games, and title content. You'll even have your own custom RSS feed.

Couple things to note:

* This feature is still relatively new. Most, if not all, bugs should be sorted out, but some could still creep up. I'm notified on any critical site errors and will try to fix them as soon as I get the time to do so.
* Your filters only apply to your special RSS feed and the main page of the site. They will not apply to forum topics, notifications, or viewing stories by category, tags, games, etc via other methods.
* You will always be able to view any story if you know the URL.
* False positives and negatives can happen. What you see or don't see is completely reliant on the story author properly naming stories, setting categories, tags, games, etc.

Thoughts? Comments? Complaints? Let me know here or shoot me a PM.

Finally, a quick PSA:

Did you know? - If you're tired of seeing comments from certain users, you can make them never show up again for you! Just click the little eye icon with a slash through it on a comment and that user won't show up anymore! The user will also not be able to reply to any of your comments or send you PMs. You cannot use this feature on moderators, story authors, or cortjezter (pro-tip: While I do have admin powers on the site, I am in neither of those groups... hint hint).

Is this on GoingSony as well?

Yes, it should work on GoingSony as well. Filters are also separated out so you should be able to have GN filters and completely different GS filters. You'll need to go to your profile edit page on GS though to access them.

Excellent feature, it will be really useful to me.

For fully exploiting it, you should add more tags to the news and to the filter list.

You can always suggest tags for stories if you think something is missing. Just use the "FIX THIS STORY!" link.

Other than a credit on the story, for now, it won't earn you much more than those bragging rights and a warm feeling. In the future--you might get much more for doing so.......

Very nice. Something to think about is that, if I'm correct, the most wanted exclusion tag for the categories section would be something like "mobile stories" as separate from consoles and portables. I suppose that would mean tagging those stories, but I think that might be the most in demand. I have a sneaking suspicion that you will find Pokemon GO to be the most excluded custom term in content/tags/games as it is.

Mobile games would technically fall under portable, with a tag of "mobile" as its platform, just like "3ds" is a specific tag for a portable device or game.

For the content terms, are strings of multiple words accepted? Do they need inverted commas?

I'm not following what you mean.

In the "Content" category, does it work if I put "famitsu most wanted" or do I need to put only single words like "famitsu"?

Example:
[miitomo, skylanders, famitsu most wanted]
or
[miitomo, skylanders, "famitsu most wanted"]
or
[miitomo, skylanders, famitsu]
?

Examples 1 and 3 will most likely get what you want. Though example 3 will match on titles with just "famitsu" in them. If you explicitly want "famitsu most wanted" to match, you want the full phrase.

Those are called quotation (or quote) marks, not inverted commas. There's also the apostrophe and the single quote mark (same character but different use)

Wow surprised t27duck haven't downvoted or ranted his own News.
Sorry, couldn't resist : D

BTT: It's definitely an improvement to the System we are used to. At the moment I may not need it, but it can come in Handy so I think it's good this new Option is there.

Can we have a filter for press releases?

that's just fantastic, yeah like everyone I wish this was everywhere.lol

Thank you for this! I appreciate how much you guys listen to feedback.

There are some categories missing from the Categories section. Things like "Podcast" are missing.

Another problem: the Content section is limited to 255 characters. That is nowhere near enough, at least for me. Please fix this.

Cool new feature. Thanks guys. Will surely be useful to many readers! ^_^

So, I wonder if my adamant requesting has something to do with the release of this feature or not ^^

T27's schedule works in mysterious ways, however this was always a planned feature of the site; as far back as 2012

So guessing it doesn't pick up anything in the body of the article? I'll have to hope RMC puts "Emily" in the title? Well that's unfortunate.

But neat feature none the less. Thanks for the hard work!

Nice mail, t27duck. :p

On-topic: Nice! Hope this means I can remove to an extent Tilmen from "my" GoNintendo.
