Looks like someone caught the 'What if the Wii never happened' article we posted earlier today! There's an obvious bit of inspiration from that article in the one linked below, which happens to take things a step further. The Wii is indeed a huge hit, but you have to wonder just how much of that success in the states has to do with the bundling of Wii Sports. Would the Wii have made the same impact without that bundle?

I wasn't excited for Wii Sports, but I'm sure it did help. I think the Wii still would have done well since people could still find out about the game. And the Ds is a weird system that doesn't come with games but sells/sold well.

If it didn't came with the Wii people would've still bought Mario Galaxy.

The article was misleading as it implies Wii Play actually was bundled with the Wii in Japan; it wasn't though I'm guessing the person means retailers were happy to bundle Wii Play or was it Wii Play actually has a higher sales figure than Wii Sports in Japan?
Anyway, if it didn't come with Wii sports it would have cost the classic Nintendo price of $199.99. Wii Sports would probably be a $30 or maybe $40 release. I think it would have forced NOA to have Wii Play at launch (like the rest of the world) but unless there some peripheral bundling with Wii Sports then Wii Play would be the most popular title.

Wii Sports sold the Wii, to anyone that wasn't a serious Nintendo fan anyway.

I'm sure ANYONE who got a Wii, the first game they popped in was Wii Sports. It was for me. Played Wii Tennis with my dad for hours and he called up my grandparents telling them they had to see how amazing it was. The game really helped the system gain appeal.
