As Game Informer has been hyping for weeks now, their latest issue features a huge spread on Epic Mickey. You get your first look at in-game screens and brand-new art, as well as Mickey's redesign, and a host of other characters. Trust me, you're going to want to run out and pick up this issue for yourself, just to get a look at all the visuals!
Obviously, I cannot show you the screens or art on here, but thanks to Hero of Legend, I can give you the first details!
- Mickey's appearance is much, much closer to his original debut style
- Disney was the one to approach Spector
- Spector originally was against the idea of creating a Mickey game, because he said that he didn't do kids games
- Spector changed his mind when Disney said that they were looking for someone to 'reinvigorate' Mickey
- Disney had to get back the rights to Oswald before he could be used in this game
- the sorcerer Yensid creates a pen-and-paper world for his forgotten creations, which is where Oswald lives
- this world is similar to Walt Disney World
- Mickey enters this world through a magic mirror, and accidentally spills paint and paint thinner on the drawing of this world. Mickey escapes before Yensid finds out.
- The spill that Mickey caused ends up turning the drawing into a twisted version of what was originally created.
- the Phantom Blot ends up taking over this world
- many years later, after Mickey becomes successful, he re-enters the mirror and sees what has happened to the world. The Phantom Blot drags Mickey into the world, which is where your adventure begins
- use the Wiimote to paint in buildings, platforms and more
- swipe away enemies with the Wiimote when using paint thinner
- create/destroy the world as you go along
- Junction Point took hundreds of photos while at Disney World in order to capture the essence of the park, and translate ideas into the game
- play the game as you like, either destroying everything in sight, or taking the hero's route. It's completely up to you, and you can mix-and-match play styles
- Gremlin Village is reminiscent of 'It's a Small World'
- Mickey's appearance and stance will change based on the way you play the game
- trade some items for health
- Pete returns, and at one point attacks you with a huge zepplin
- Donald Duck animatronic pieces are scattered throughout one portion of the game. Collect them to put him back together.
- Spector wants this game to scare kids, in some ways
- the game will also have funny parts
- Spector calls the game world's visuals 'the bastard child of Tim Burton and Disney'
- elements of platforming, exploration and role-playing
- go into the inner-workings of some levels and rides
- visit the gears and mechanics underneath the 'It's a Small World' ride, complete with an eerie re-imagining of the music
- enter movie screens to move from in-game island to island
- movie screen transitions put you into a 2d world, where you'll revisit some of Mickey's old cartoons
- find sketches, and bring them to life with your paintbrush
- sketches can be activated to give you new powers (clock sketch to slow time, TV sketch to distract enemies, and more)
- collect 'E-Tickets' to enter rides, and use as a form of currency to buy power-ups
- Jim Dooley 'Pushing Daises' is doing the soundtrack
Warren Spector on Mickey
"I want him to be a hero...and I want to remind him that it's okay to behave badly."
Warren on Oswald
"All he really wants is to be loved by Walt Disney. In the end, the Blot won the war and pushed Oswald into hiding and exile."
Warren on the Gremlins
"The Gremlins are the only forces of good in the world that can continue to fight against the Blot.
Warren on the Bunny Kids
"These are going to be the breakout stars of the game. Mark my words."
Warren on the Buddies (Donald, Goofy, ect.)
"Oswald is trying to recreate Mickey's life, so he has the Mad Doctor build these animatronic versions of his buddies."
Warren on the Mad Doctor
"He's from an early 30's cartoon that is pretty swell."
Warren on the Phantom Blot
"The Phantom Blot has been a consistent villain since 1939. He's just been lame."
Warren on the Blotlings
"They're the popcorn unit. You need something that the player can just swat away. They're supposed to be funny, silly and stupid."
Warren on the Beetleworx
"In order to deal with these guys, you have to erase their painted bits to get to the vulnerable inert spots underneath."

@MAD_BOY
I've received written instructions from various North American and European magazines that tell me the rules and regulations for conveying their information, and that includes no scans.
I have received no such emails or contacts from Japanese magazines, and my outreach to them has been unanswered.
This. RMC, you always post scans from Famitsu and other Japanese Magazines, but when It comes to US mags, its a problem.
At any rate, this game sounds awesome. This game is going to be (excuse the constantly used and bad pun) EPIC.
@RawmeatCowboy
Those mags probably don't know that you post them. This site is viewed mostly by North American and European users. They may have similar rules to the US and Euro Mags....or they could be totally fine with it.
My guess is that american mags would lose sales, whereas japanese ones are more likely to get people importing them when they see what cool info they have!
That, folks, is how to deflate hype for this game. This guy sounds like a prick and wants to appeal to the edgey "hardcore" crowd. Consider my expectations low.
Everything about this game looks like a dream come true. I'm a big Disney fan, and seeing really forgotten characters like Oswald -even older than Mickey!- makes me very happy.
Also, doesn't it seem to have a Disney tale feeling in it?! Magical mirrors, moving through movie screens... God, it just can't come soon enough!
Also...
- Donald Duck animatronic pieces are scattered throughout one portion of the game. Collect them to put him back together.
F*ck yeah! Donald is my favourite Disney character!
GOTY right here, ladies and gentlemen. And yes, I'm really embarassed that I'm getting hyped up like a little girl for a video game.
- Mickey's appearance and stance will change based on the way you play the game
inFAMOUS Mickey.
Anyways, sounds pretty cool. Though why would the Bunny Kids be the breakout stars of the game? That's like, supporting the rabbit instead of the mouse.
Don't really want to type too much, but I'm excited to see some footage (or screens if I'm asking for too much).
RawmeatCowboy already replied, care to take a look at it?
@Terranigma Freak
Haha, what? Did you not read anything that he said? Anyone who sees my comments knows I'm the first one to jump on a developer or hardcore attitude, and geez, you're jumping the gun here.
In reality, games focused solely on kids these days tend to suck, because developers have forgotten that kids aren't stupid and deserve better than crappy licensed games, Disney has been a huge force of bad on this matter.
Plus Spector is a generation zero developer, the man holds old values, I'd trust him more than almost anyone else to make the game into something anyone can enjoy, and understand just the right kind of creepiness that is good for an all-audience game.
He wouldn't turn down the idea of a "kids" game as long as HE doesn't try to make a s*** game.
...It's his goal to scare small children?
Interesting...
He replied while I was typing up my message. Care not to be an a******
@CJLopez
Okay guys, calm down. No need to argue. Let's just enjoy the awesome info!

Anyone with it want to be my friend?

Where've you been?
Yensid is the sorcerer from Fantasia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yensid
This was unoriginal back in the 1940's.

EDIT: Also, thank you Hero of Legend. I saw this on NeoGAF before and then I saw someone post that you posted it here so I came back over here to see it.
...What? What does that even mean? Note how he didn't come back because Disney said "NO WAIT DUDEZ YOU CAN MAKE MICKEY COOL AND HARDCORE AND TOTALLY RADICAL", he came back because they said this was an important thing, not just some two-bit kid's game.
Kids are of course going to be the primary target of the game, if Disney wants to reinvent Mickey, it's the kids who matter, with bonuses of nostalgia and a new spin for the older crowd. The point is that it's going to have to be a game filled with respect and genuine care, not a crappy kids cash-in.
@moonspark
Disney films are honestly filled with nightmare fuel, have you gone back and watched any? If you never felt scared at anything in one of Disney's cartoons as a little kid, congratulations, you're of a choice few.
Most stuff that seems harmless and amusing to an older person, like Pink Elephants song from Dumbo, was fascinatingly scary and 'wrong' to a kid...But we watched it anyway because it was so cool, and we loved the movies.
This game sounds more promising with each news bit.
Fail.
I have seen them and nope.
Thank you, thank you!
Looove that idea.. why can't ideas like this spur more often.
I have a feeling like this is going to be like watching one of the old Mickey cartoons.
Oh you
But anyways Holy s*** this looks amazing. I'm literally jizzing in my pants because of how awesome this game is. GOTY! All years
Fro~
Man, I wish I could say more! ARG! HOLY WOWOWOWOWOWOW!
BOOYAH!!.. can't wait to see Mickey's initial appearance.
Yeah I knew about Fantasia, but I never knew the sorcerer's name. I saw it on the Gaf and felt like an idiot. Thanks for making me feel more stupid here, lol…
Honestly though I think it's more damaging to post the info rather than the pics. Pics you can look at in a glance... but you'd be better off actually buying the magazine to read what's going on in the pics.
so...
POST THEM PLEASE.
Fro~
PS: Hey RMC, is it OK if we charge people money to see the scans? I don't want to PM someone them for FREE!! Lol. ;D
agreed. I want to see how it looks in motion.
Anyway, I can't wait to see some gameplay videos of this thing.
Game looks alright but the concept art certainly wowed me more than the first scans have.
I C WUT U DID THAR.
I am looking at the scans now and my mind is blown.
Some of the screens of Mickey are kinda like "EH... DUNNO" but a lot are awesome.
Also love the Donald robot and Oswald.
BEST PART?
I just got my Oswald t-shirt in the mail today! :3
Better edit that fast before you get the banhammer
And if anyone can tell me, is the music going to be good? Because I love music, but I'm not familiar with the composer of this game.
Aww, I want one!
Aw. I'm sorry. D:
EDIT:
@Hero of legend
It was $4.99 USD on the Disney Store (final total was $8.50).
http://as7.disneystore.com/is/image/Dis ... 76M?$full$
Aww, that's okay. XD
idk, lets see if you live
Since your just linking to a photo site, and not directly to the photos....probably not.
I'm still excited about this anyways and it's still to soon to tell.
Sigh...
With that said... STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME, MILEY CYRUS!
My hype meter would die if I knew Miley, the JoBros or any other Disney singer made music for this game.
You all need to chill, my god.
also, don't solicit requests to be sent this information.
violation = insta-ban.
Looks pretty much like Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 actually.
@Nez
inFAMOUS Mickey indeed! Hahahaha!
That means it will be fantastic then.
I immediately thought of Tim Burton when I saw the concept art. I love Tim Burton's romance/gothic style.
Tim should definitely make a Castlevania movie... After seeing what Paul W. Anderson did to the Resident Evil franchise, I am extremely skeptical with his version of Castlevania.
:gasp!: What a perfect fit for a whimsical soundtrack!
I won't post a link out of respect and adherence to the rules, but....
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.
Talk about epic. If he does work like that on this game, it'll truly live up to its title.
That said, I can't wait for gameplay footage and actual screenshots and not just scans. They probably don't help, although I expect the mostly untextured look of the models isn't a style playing to the strengths of an underpowered system these days. More advanced lighting and such things would help that kind of graphical path more than if it were relying on painted textures a tad more.
NeoGAF's an elitist forum, so what else should one expect?
As for the information. Golly, that sounds awesome [still hopin' there's some optional WM+ brush controls myself too].
Just the 28th for a trailer now [the screens are awesome]!
Best Disney movie of all time. Also most underrated.
You know how I feel old for knowing about it? I go into the Disney store when I was visiting NJ to see Springsteen at Giants Stadium (he puts out more energy than my dad on a good day, and he still has 10 years on my old man, lol). But I digress. The woman I talk to has grey hair, probably has a few grandchildren of her own. When I ask her if they have The Great Mouse Detective remastered on DVD,
"...Are you sure that's Disney?"
1986 movie...I've enjoyed it ever since I was born 5 years after...
SO I WANT MAH BASIL AND PROFESSOR RATIGAN.
Mmm, good point. Some people on there really act elitist to the point of me going "okay, that's all I can take."
@The_Dude1212
I love that movie! Believe or not, but just two or three weeks ago Disney Channel here in the US aired the movie at 10:00 AM on Playhouse Disney, with no commercial breaks and I they didn't "tone down anything for the kiddies" (so you've still got the crazy Ratigan near the end). I recorded the movie onto a VHS tape and I'm never recording over it (yes, I still don't have it on DVD yet).
or in other words, lame.
But i'm really hoping there's gonna be no need for me to!
Also, the only level we're seeing in the scans is "It's a Small World." Look up a video of the ride itself and you'll see that it's one of the more colorful rides at the Disney parks. Haunted Mansion's going to be in the game so you can expect "darkness" from that.
@WhatCD
I don't really see the "Spyro" designs you're talking about, and I own all of the original PS1 games (which kicked ass).
You might want to google Gremlin and find out about the meaning that existed long before the movie.
I love The Great Mouse Detective. and this game is going to good!
So nobody can really say if the rest of the game won't look like what the concepts look like, at least a little.
We're looking at Small World, guys. It's not going to look that grimdark yet.
Meanwhile, I AM kinda put off by the look of the Hades beetleworx. It just looks a little TOO cartoony for me.
Also, Mickey looks great in some shots, terrible in others, and decent in other ones. So I guess it depends on how you're playing.
Also, we don't know what it will look like in motion, so whatever.
After looking quite a few times, the graphics look a little better each time, and I'm still sold on the concept and Oswald's design/inclusion enough to not care about the graphics at this point.
It's not what I expected, but to think my hype dropped would be a false assumption.
It still looks like it will be amazing and really fun.
Edit: Just saw the scans, they look great!! Guys saying "murr durr blurrghh" are dumb. The art is fantastic, and colours make me happy. Day 1, definitely.
@Eternal Rain
@N64_RAMIO
I remember that movie! I loved it as a kid, maybe i will watch it sometime soon... -after- halloween because I am watching only scary movies until then!
This sounds great and yes it looks great and no don't get banned for posting.
If you are on the internet now (something tells me you are) and you can't figure out how to find it you are a very very bad internet user. Take vitamins and try harder.
@MoldyClay
Thanks for talking sense to all those 'it won't/don't look like its concept art!' folks...
By pointing out that 'the level this is looks EXACTLY like the concept art to this level...'
That can only mean good things about the other levels.
