Okay, I guess the gameplay is there if nothing else. I'll try it. I wont buy it, but I'll make it a point to play the game. I'll just ignore the things I don't like.
This is going to be so very great. I know my posts on here don't really contribute to the conversation but I just really really can't wait for this game.
Looks alright. For some reason seeing it in motion makes me a little less hyped.
I guess I just don't like the art direction. However the level design seems alright. I will be picking it up, but I don't know if it will be as much fun as I had with SMB3 or SMW.
I agree with WiiFolder entirely. There is nothing about this game that screams online to me at all. To me the epitome of multiplayer gaming is sitting next to one another, having a good time. People complaining about the lack on online being a deal-breaker honestly baffles me. Was SMW a terrible game because it didn't have online? No, of course not. And neither will this be. Although I do really like the NSMB theme, I do think they're way overusing it according to these videos. We don't need more than one version of a song.
I don't need online with this game I'm use to Wii games with no online. Just the fact that people who can't fly in, get off of work, Sick Friends, anything it would be nice to play with someone other than yourself. Yes you could have used Wiispeak the thing needs an extra game that uses it.
Actually Animal Crossing is a game designed soley around the concept of communication between your friends and family. The very idea behind the series makes using WiFi and Wii Speak a perfect match made in heaven.
NSMBWii is a game all about local multiplayer and really focusing in on how fun it is to be together with friends and family and play a Mario game.
WiFi cannot in any way capture that feeling. Wii Speak or not, sitting in a room by yourself playing this game would be like watching Pamela Anderson undress through a peep hole.
And yes I know my analogy's always turn porn related but the point still stands.
Also I CANNOT see how some people have NOBODY to play this game with. I'm sorry but if you have nobody to sit down with and have some fun playing a video game than you're in a bad position in life. Hell call your parents in the room to play, your girlfriend / wife even. Nobody lives their life in a way that they do not have friends stopping by atleast a couple times a week.
Further more the game can also be played by yourself. So if your buddies can't make it over one night... just play yourself. Sorry if I come across as a jerk on this, but I just hate how some gamers think if it has multiplayer IT NEEDS WIFI. What was the meme? "No WiFi no buy". Ugh. X|
I am SO tired of people saying things like this game doesn't need online, and local is so much better. This game is a multiplayer game. The Wii can do online. Many people would be happy with an online component and the package would be better off with it's inclusion. So why do people, just because they personally don't like online for some reason, say this game doesn't need it? I want a REAL reason. I hope it isn't just because it's a Nintendo game that all is excused.
p.s. I would MUCH rather complain about little problems with online, than complain about having no online at all.
"Also I CANNOT see how some people have NOBODY to play this game with."
Maybe you want to play with a far away friend that also has the game. I don't see Why they couldn't add it. They could just have the option of playing local or online.
You guys need to stop making excuses for Nintendo leaving out online play with this. Yes, local multiplayer will always be the more enjoyable experience, but it's not always possible. If I wanted to play Mario with someone like MoldyClay at 11 o'clock at night am I expected to just go over to his house? That's a real pain in the ass just to play Mario for a half hour. This is where online play SHOULD have come in. People can't always get together at the drop of a hat to play a game locally.
Another example, my brother is currently in Philadelphia. I'm in New Jersey. If we were to get this game we could only play it together when he comes up here or vice versa. It's 2009. Online gaming should be a standard at this point.
There is NO reason Ninendo shouldn't have included online play with Wii Speak. I don't think anyone is saying the game is going to suck just because it doesn't have online play, but that doesn't change the fact that it really would have been nice and that it SHOULD.
I have my girlfriend to play this game with. My closest friends live at least a half hour away and the rest are at college still and in other states.
My parents don't play anymore and my sister is never home and is always 'too busy' on the computer to play.
Granted, don't get me wrong. I will be fine playing this alone, or with my girlfriend, but I'd like to play against two other people, and that is only going to be able to happen this year if I have a birthday party, and a Christmas party.
Nobody wants to drive a half hour, or even longer, for the purpose of playing Mario.
On top of that, those of you saying "ONLINE'S STUPID" fail to consider the fact that with online you can play at any time.
Maybe your friends and you DO want to make a trip. But what if all of your friends are working? Or you have work? Or what if they are on vacation? What if it's too late? It's icy out and everyone's snowed in.
I have the most fun playing Brawl with friends in person, than online.
But that doesn't make online any less essential to being able to extend the longevity of the game for me, especially as you get older.
It's not a problem that the game NEEDS WiFi. It's the fact that it, and Wii Speak, are available options, and there is no reason it SHOULDN'T be there for those who need it (like, ACTUALLY need it) or want it for the convenience.
Wii Speak, WiFi, etc. Why have it at all if you're going to ignore it and not include it in titles that could benefit from it?
The first video IS so good. The only thing that sucked is that horrendous theme song. Give me a new theme piece or at least remix it so that it doesn't sound the same.
I'm with you. If the online is lagging then we get to here about how the Wii online sucks! The idea that 1st person shooters were on the PC first. PC are built for networking. Arcades Fighters were in mall areas. Where fighting random people is part of the fun. So I understand the idea of online being a must for those games. Super Mario Bros a home console game. That you usually trade off with someone in the room with you. Now we have this. WHich stays true to the original concept of playing with friends in house. Yes online would be cool. Yes the tech is their too do it. Will it make or break this game no. Can you beat the game with out having friends yes. This is no 4 Swords. Hell the game doesn't need any multiplayer. They just added to to justify the game being on the Wii.
I dont think the lack of online destroys the game, but it would have made it a LOT better, and just like others already said, there are certain people who you would love to play with, but cant because the world is not reduced to one town. Online makes things more convinient, but I can understand WiiFolder on why local is more enjoyable than online, its just that online is more convinient. Think Brawl, if the online was improved, do you know how many more people would be playing that game?
having said that, the super skill video took me back some 15 years or so.
I can't exactly argue with this, since it's technically correct.
But that doesn't change the fact that the game's selling point is 4 player (it's written on the box in that red atrocity in various languages), and some people will not be able to experience that due to reasons outside of their control, and there's no simple answer like "Go get some friends" or that they are a loser for being unable to gather 4 people at ANY given moment that they want to play it.
Yeah, it makes sense why you have local. Nobody said "Get rid of local multiplayer".
It won't make the game sell any less or a worse game to not have online. But it would be much more accessible if it DID have it. Leaving it out just seems silly, especially with Nintendo's philosophy.
There's no excuse for lack of online in this game, regardless of whether or not you prefer local.
'Local is better', even if true, is NOT a reason to exclude the option for people to play together who live far apart. Nintendo is supposed to be 'all inclusive' and bring everyone together right?
Frankly, yeah, I would absolutely prefer local too, but my friends are all long-distance. Inconsiderate (insert cussword here). >:/
Further, even if I did have friends to play with in person, I'd still want them to include the OPTION to play online for those less fortunate, or maybe if I end up moving out of town or something. Is that so much to ask? Done with the BS excuses now?
(PS - I hated not being able to play Super Mario World with friends when I moved away from them as a kid. Part of the point of gaming consoles being online compatible is to eliminate that from happening to people.
Also, you can multiplay that game on emulators now'days.)
Im sure it will be fun, but for me it just doesnt have that "punch" that THE fall Wii release should have. Much rather have Galaxy or Sin/Pun 2 or Metroid this Xmas than this.
People get so b**** when someone isn't hating and cursing Nintendo for not making this game online. Seriously, it's like they shot their cat or something.
Looks like they've ramped up the difficulty from the first one. Nice.
I'm indifferent about the online, since I probably wouldn't use it much if it were there, and the game is coming out next month, so it's not like Nintendo can do anything about it now, no matter how loud the whining gets. I'm gonna enjoy the game for what it is: a brand-new console 2D Super Mario game that supports 4 players.
What would online multiplayer add to a local multiplayer experience, outside lag which would kill any decent 2D platformer (even 100ms (which is pretty standard in all online games) would utterly destroy the 4 player platforming)? Nothing but problems.
If you want online multiplayer that much, go back to your PC or gaming centric PCs. I'm thankful they decided to only add local multiplayer in the game. The resurrection of local multiplayer is a welcome sight.
Making the argument that this game needed wifi because it allows you to play multiplayer at anytime is stupid. It actually doesn't as you still have the problem of your friends not always being able to play. Don't even get me started on how dumb it would be to play this game with strangers on WiFi through random matches.
Not only is it a multiplayer game but you can also obviously play it in single player. Or is playing a super mario bros. game by yourself and having fun suddenly unheard of? If you don't have people in the room to play with just play by yourself, not like it's no fun by yourself.
People who claim this should have had wifi just flat out don't look at the game from a design perspective and only through an obsessive typical core gamer's eyes.
What if your friend disconnects during gameplay and he was holding onto your character? What if your friend is just messing around and keeps tossing you in a pit? You don't have the ability to slap them upside the head through WiFi. There's a huge list of reasons that a game such as this just isn't going to work on WiFi very well at all.
It's not Nintendo's job to forcefully alter a game's design because some people flat out don't have friends. Don't give me the whole cliche' argument of "oh well they're all away at school". You cannot possibly have NO FRIENDS in your life. If you do then maybe new super mario bros. wii not having wifi isn't the biggest issue in your life right now.
Since when would online have to benefit Local when it's Online mode and not Local?
That doesn't even make sense.
And why should a game with enhanced DS graphics on the Wii have lag?
Nobody said to get rid of local multiplayer and you're a complete fool for being happy that they don't give a s*** about people who can't play with anyone else at home for various, legitimate, uncontrollable reasons.
Online gaming is on the Wii. It's an online console. The whole point, and whole philosophy behind it as far as Wii is concerned, is to play with other people, either far away, or with friends that you're nowhere near.
You are actually GLAD that people CAN'T have fun with their friends, because you think people should all move and live right next to each other so they can play together.
Get over yourself.
He flat out said he would prefer local, but that doesn't make online a bad thing.
And learn to read all of the legitimate situations where this would be beneficial.
Wifi opens up a hell of a lot more opportunities if you can read. Such as going on vacation, moving, far away colleges, snowed in, and for kids- not being allowed to have friends over or something and using Wifi to bypass it.
And nobody said they wanted to play Random WiFi.
And nobody said they can't play by themselves. I prefer my games to mostly be single player. But the game advertises 4 player in various languages on the box, so the selling point IS multiplayer, so why would you alienate people who don't live next to their friends?
People who claim this should have had wifi just flat out don't look at the game from a design perspective and only through a "ner ner core gaming wifi ner ner headset and leaderboards ner ner HD grafiz ner ner neogaf" point of view.
WHAT ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT?
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?
My god, as if you being a troll wasn't confirmed before, that just sealed the deal.
What? I see this game being touted as a 4-player experience. If I'm by myself, I should be able to still play with other people. Also, even if I did have 3 other people to play with locally, I only have 2 wii remotes. And you know how expensive those are. It would cost me at least $80 for two more controllers. The game costs $50. I bought the Wii for $250 plus tax expecting games like this to make use of WFC.
But yea, I just wanted to pop in and say that I disagree with your comment and that i think you are wrong. You are making bold claims and generalizations about people with reasonable expectations regarding the implementation of online, just because you don't want to admit that this game should have online.
And if this game shouldn't have online, then what game should? Are you trying to say that online gaming shouldn't exist at all because local multiplayer can be more enjoyable? Or is it just because we know the lag would be so horrible that the game just absolutely wouldn't work online, so we shouldn't try at all? Or are you just talking out your pooper?
Nintendo knows this game will sell anyway, so that's why I think they didn't bother with online. Excitebots gets online, but not this?! grr
@Adanac It would be cool to have anyone in the world be your opponent or partner is games.
It's not at all a matter of 'admitting' this game needs wifi. Through a design perspective it doesn't need it / would not work well on WiFi.
Too many gamers never sit back and really look at a game and think about what it's direction is before complaining about something it doesn't feature.
The stage demo for this game at E3 wasn't showing some guy in another state and the other on stage playing together... they never spoke of WiFi or gave the impression the game would feature it. In fact they showed exactly why the game would be fun and what it was about - local multiplayer with back and forth banter between players.
This argument isn't going to really come to any kind of conclusion though. It's really just a matter of people who have friends to play with and people who don't.
What games SHOULD have online? Mario Kart for example works great on WiFi for many reasons. It takes away the annoyance of splitscreen for one. It's a competitive game is another reason. It's a series that has always been based on frantic multiplayer unlike Super Mario Bros.
Animal Crossing is another game which greatly benefits from wifi. Being able to visit each other's towns without being in the same room. It feels like stopping by a visiting a friend. It's a communication game, a way to stay in touch with friends and compare how they've customized their stuff to your way of living in the game.
Oh and as far as your complaint about only have 2 wii remotes. I assume your friends would also own a remote or two to bring over when they come to play. If they don't then how would you have played them on WiFi to begin with?
" Such as going on vacation, moving, far away colleges, snowed in, and for kids- not being allowed to have friends over or something and using Wifi to bypass it."
Yeah I go on vacation to get away from things and bring my wii to play new super mario bros. with friends on wifi... while i'm on vacation. And seriously guy snow in? How often does the average person get snowed in to where they cannot go anywhere? 3 days a year at best? If you're at college I assume you have friends there... I mean there's no way you can't find somebody in college to come to your dorm and play a game.
As far as the online debate goes. I would rather play this game with my friends in the same room as me, and that happens to be the way I will play. My girlfriend and I will likely have a go at it together, and we'll also invite some friends over for some 4 player action from time to time.
That said, I think having an online mode wouldn't be a bad thing. There are people out there who don't have friends that game, want to play with friends that live far away, or don't have friends at all. So the option for them would be nice...as long as Wii Speak was added into the mix.
It doesn't matter to me. I have every intention to play the game socially. I think it will really add to the experience. There are those that believe online is the be-all, end-all of video game features, however, and the option would be nice.
It isn't an option, though. So let's move on. It's an old topic. We've all heard the arguemnts from both sides numerous times and bringing it up over and over again won't change anything.
Did I mention I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME TO COME OUT?
Correct. But the problem we are arguing about isn't that it needs it.
It's the fact that it's inconsiderate to the gamers who have totally uncontrollable circumstances in which they can't play with their friends.
And there are people on here that are arguing that WiFi is dumb, and should NOT be in the game, because apparently it will RUIN local multiplayer, and because only PC/PS360 fans want it.
Not because, you know, your friend goes on vacation and wants to play with you while they're out in Spain.
Or there's a snowstorm and you can't leave the house, and want to play with some buddies.
Or, you know, you're at home, a friend is at college, and another friend moved to another state and your significant other is right with you and the 4 of you want to play.
Apparently these situations never occur, and WiFi, on a WiFi enabled console, should not be a factor when making a game, even as an optional feature.
@WiiFolder I would play with random people if my friends didn't have remotes. And not all my friends and family have Wiis.
Man, not everyone values back and forth banter like you do. I admit, banter can be fun, but then, the main fun of the game doesn't come from banter. And if Nintendo bothered to use WiiSpeak, or standard headsets, people would still be able to talk mess to each other. Different people have fun in different ways, and there should be more options than just local multiplayer.
The developers obviously don't think players should have to experience the game in the same way if they can't or don't want to. That is why the Super Guide was added for newer and less skilled players. If it wasn't added, would you say that newer gamers just shouldn't bother with this game, or that experienced gamers should just deal with the game being super easy to beat? If they can add the Super Guide to help players who suck at games, why shouldn't they add online for people who don't have other players or controllers around?
Spain, One of the largest countries in Europe. Beach resorts on Costa Blanca. Tons of national parks. Famous Monuments all over the place... But I better pack my Wii so I can play Super Mario Bros. in the hotel room on WiFi.
Seriously though it's a dumb argument which is going nowhere. The game doesn't have WiFi, it was a design choice, move on. Don't purchase it if you don't have people to locally play with. Either that or look forward to playing through the giant selection of 80 new levels, new powerups, return of koopalings and lots more.
Ugh. Whatever. Apparently, playing your game whenever you feel like is dumb, and only friendless losers would rather play online than grab random people for a game of Mario. I feel the same way as Burgers right now, and MoldyClay made good points. I think I'm done.
- I, and friends, have brought game consoles with them on vacations before. It's called "playing when you're back at the hotel at night and you're bored".
I played Resident Evil on a portable TV. *shrugs* Sorry if this isn't a common thing.
- Snow is regarding younger people, bro. Or when you just get your license and your parents are like YOU CAN'T DRIVE IN THE SNOW YET. I'm not talking about older people in this situation, since the target demographic will be younger people.
- I personally am out of college, and as such, I don't see anyone there anymore, and only a small handful of the friends I made there do I still talk to.
On campus, were there people who would gladly play games? Yes. But that doesn't mean I want to play with them. Some of them were obnoxious and terrible people to play games with. To the point where someone threw a controller because we exclusively killed him in Smash Bros. (and it wasn't even HIS controller).
But I have friends that are still in college, but are on completely opposite ends of the state and rarely come home anyway. For that matter, in my case, I think only 2 of them even have a Wii, but this isn't the case for everyone.
For the rest of your comment:
- What difference does the stage demo make? The Animal Crossing demo had you play by yourself while Mario talked to you through Wii Speak.
All kinds of games can show that they are amazing and about playing together at home, near each other. But I still don't get why this means online is a bad thing.
How does the design say "This would be bad online"? Because it's an adventure game?
I am going to either play alone, or play with my girlfriend. Or, at some point, invite Sgt Scyther over and we'll play.
MrBubbles will never play because I am convinced he's no longer a gamer. Everything is graphics and sales to him.
My problem with the other side of the argument is that it seems that all they argue is that "WiFi is bad, for HARDCOREFAGS only, and would totally ruin the game because it's meant to be local (because, this somehow makes sense).
I address this in the above post, but to be clear, part of those arguments are for:
1. Younger people (which doesn't always mean young kids. It can be anyone up into high school) that get DRAGGED into vacations that they don't want to be on.
Or, if you're going across the country or something, you can play during your breaks/stops.
And it was also in reference to playing at night, when you're back at the hotel and bored.
My friends have done this, and I have done this once when I was in high school.
The adult arguments are related to scheduling. The "baw, I can't go out/I'm on vacation" are related to younger people.
I'm not arguing about me having people to play with, as my intent, from the start is to just play alone or with my girlfriend. It's just the fact it would've been nice to have the option, but apparently that's demon speak.
I know it was a design choice, but it seems to exclude people, and that seems silly.
I'm looking forward to a game, so this was never an issue for me, personally.
It's an issue because the logic is just so backwards.
But I'm done for this topic. Let's stop arguing until the next time it's brought up and someone says something stupid and everyone rampages.
Im way late in the conversation, but I feel having more options in a game, particularly a NINTENDO AAA-title one, cannot be a bad thing. And to argue that for them to add any option into a game, even one that maybe only one person in the entire world would use and enjoy, is a BAD thing makes zero sense to me. Furthermore, for Nintendo devotees who are clearly passionate about gaming (assuming engaging in conversations on GoNintendo indicates passion) are okaying Nintendo's EXCLUSION of certain options means the consumers are giving the huge, powerful corporation a free pass!! How can we as gamers expect Nintendo or third parties to start listening to our valid complaints if there are just as many of us "letting it slide" for this game as there are becoming upset and vocal?
If the game literally IS NOT capable of 4-player wifi because of the Wii's technical limitations then that's fair. But if Nintendo could have made it happen with friend codes, Wii Speak, random players or with NONE of those things, and chose not to include them because of laziness or for any reason then shame on Nintendo!
I personally will be playing this game with 3 friends locally. But for me to DEFEND Nintendo's exclusion of an option that could make this game better for even one other person out there would be ridiculously selfish of me.
I'm going to love playing this game. I wouldn't love it any less had there been an option included to play over Wifi. But the fact that some people would love it MORE had that very option been thrown in means Nintendo has made a huge misstep in my opinion.
haha yes! i shouldve mentioned those as well... particularly video 1 is AWESOME which is kind of ironic since it's only 1 player...I wonder how fun/difficult pulling off amazing run-throughs like this will be with 4 people!! probably lots of both!
Loving this new game, but I CAN"T STAND the SOUND track!! ARgh it drives me crazy, that's the only downside, I really hope this song doesn't feature too often during the game, I really wish they'd replaced it since NSMB DS.
Story Feedback
And he gets smaller.. even more funny
edit: my mistake, it's just the ice power, I thought that was just limited to the penguin suit.
Where's the video from? Website?
No, that's just Mario using the Mini Shroom.
I thought that there was a power-up that made you smaller, but what you say makes more sense.. maybe the giant world is back.
@WiiFolder
Wait, now I'm confused
@mariomaniac45213
I honestly never saw the point of the Mega Mushroom. It was just an overpowered version of the Starman.
Though I still seriously hate the NSMB theme. :I
Probably just my personal taste hmmm
My bad. I mean the sync is off. I can hear it fine. It's just that the sound is later than the image.
He means the sound and video aren't synced properly.
Naw its my bad sorry!
If 2 or more people got the Mega Mushroom I think the game would crash xD
Still, the game looks Mega Awesome so far.
@gamerpete64
Also, this. That was neat. And Super Skills (Super guide?) with 2 or 3 people at the same time? Oh wow
EDIT: nevermind, that was a replay, I guess. The Super Guide uses Luigi as a main character.
I guess I just don't like the art direction. However the level design seems alright. I will be picking it up, but I don't know if it will be as much fun as I had with SMB3 or SMW.
But it made me realize I hate the theme.
Seriously, Nintendo.
The NSMB theme is horrendous.

WiFi would be boring in a game like this. It's all about being there in the same room yelling back and forth at each other and making a night of it.
It's a social game.
Not trying to get on your bad side but isn't that Wiispeak is for.
Because it's not like you could have friends that live far away that you can't play with in the same room, right?
This would have been a GREAT game to use WiiSpeak with. Much better than Animal Crossing since there is actually goals in this game.
And since when was a Mario platformer a social game?
People complaining about the lack on online being a deal-breaker honestly baffles me. Was SMW a terrible game because it didn't have online? No, of course not. And neither will this be.
Although I do really like the NSMB theme, I do think they're way overusing it according to these videos. We don't need more than one version of a song.
That first video, with the crazy skills of the player, does that show how the super guide will work?
I don't need online with this game I'm use to Wii games with no online. Just the fact that people who can't fly in, get off of work, Sick Friends, anything it would be nice to play with someone other than yourself. Yes you could have used Wiispeak the thing needs an extra game that uses it.

YES!!!!
p.s. I would MUCH rather complain about little problems with online, than complain about having no online at all.
What if you don't have a GF, Wife or your parents are dead. See you don't take anything into consideration. No Offense

@Eternal Rain
I think I'm just sick of hearing it. Potentially.
They just added to to justify the game being on the Wii.
this.
@someone17
This completely.
Not interested in trolls much.
(Mods, look at his feedback history.)
Maybe you should actually read the posts about it instead.
The complaints are entirely valid.
@Inneverate
You're not even reading these posts are you?
EDIT:
@WiiFolder
Seriously?
Thank you, man.
Excitebots gets online, but not this?! grr
@Adanac
It would be cool to have anyone in the world be your opponent or partner is games.
Losing a lot of respect for you, man.
@RustyCage
Totally welcome.
@terryxlr
This, this, this.
I would play with random people if my friends didn't have remotes.
@DonnyDarko420
This.
D:
Oh well.
You totally missed the whole point. I'm not going to repeat it to you though. Enjoy thinking you know what you're talking about. :3
@WiiFolder
And I can't defend them on this.
I hope I was clear
Bravo, my good sir!
To be honest, I feel bad that online got brought up (or rather, that WiiFolder had to reply negatively about it to Alkemystical).
Because these videos and tricks were really amazing and deserved more attention than the fight did.
Yeah, this. All things considered, the game still looks like it's going to a lot of fun and these videos just prove it.
Is that the demo play playing.
