October 15, 2009 by RawmeatCowboy Filed Under: Nintendo in general

Here's a little excerpt from a journalist roundtable with Shigeru Miyamoto, which took place earlier today...

N'Gai Croal - "Where were you when you heard that Captain Lou Albano passed away, and what was your reaction?"

Miyamoto - "You're the one who just told me."

Something tells me that Miyamoto may not even know who Captain Lou is, or was. I just hope there was something lost in the translation of the question/answer.

I'm not really surprised. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show wasn't EVER endorsed by Nintendo of Japan.

Obviously Captain Lou Albano doesn't ring any bells to any normal japanese person/gamer.

That would be a really shocking question to get if it was about someone he had a close relationship with.

Would any of us even know the Japanese voice actor for Captain Falcon by name? Or Link? I'd wager most would not.

And those are canon.

@Burgers

Actually, I thought a lot of people knew Noboyuki Hiyama's name (adult Link). Though, that might just be Zelda fans that know that. I don't know the other actors though, and I don't know who does the new voice for Link.

But I don't know Captain Falcon's.

I never heard of Captain Lou until his passing. I don't think he's that well known.

@MoldyClay

Link's new voice actor is Akira Sasanuma, who's also had roles in Gundam Seed, it's sequel series, and in one of the Kamen Rider series. Link's other adult VA also did Ikkaku in Bleach, and Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho.

Getting on topic, I wonder if Miyamoto ever was very familiar with Lou or even the Super Show. Obviously he knows Martinet since he's the official VA for Mario in the games in every country, but what about the cartoon VAs? For that matter, did Miyamoto know the seiyu who voiced Mario in the 1986 anime film?

@Asad

He's mainly well known to those who grew up on Mario and wrestling during the 80s. Of course I'm not an 80s kid, but I liked wrestling for a while years ago and I liked watching the Super Mario Bros. Super Show whenever I could. He was a good pre-Martinet Mario.

To be fair, Captain Lou wasn't a super-huge celebrity or anything (after the 80's anyway), and Miyamoto's obviously a busy guy. He doesn't have time to check Gonintendo everyday. :P

Doesn't suprise me, I'm sure Miyamoto had more important things to do.

Even less known was Captain Lou's other song, immortalized in animutation form for your enjoyment.

Nutz, you beat me to it.

I'm figuring Shiggy had no clue who he was. If he did, I'd expect that he would've said more like:

Miyamoto - "You're the one who just told me. That's sad, he was a great Mario and really seemed to enjoy portraying the character for kids."

Or something to that effect. Unless he's just slighty evil and was thinking:

"That's the past man, who cares, we got Charles in Charge now!"

:)

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show was amazing. But I don't think it ever came out in Japan, did it? Miyamoto might know who Captain Lou was, wrestling is bigger in Japan than it is in America, after all (same with Mexico and Canada).

I wonder if he was aware of Captain N, the Game Master? Also awesome show.

Captain Lou... realy wrestling fans are the only ones who really know him...

i don't blame Miyamoto to be honest, i didn't know who the man (Albano) was and i am old enough to have watched the mario show.

plus as BigLord has already said, i don't believe the show was endorsed by nintendo of japan...

...and i don't know we have to assume miyamoto never watched the show in the first place as it was a terrible show (as with so many late 80's/early 90's cartoon series).

i understand why most people in japan would not know (quick! off the top of your head, who is the original kamen rider?)

but it is kinda odd for him to not know of a guy who did a whole cartoon series based off his character.

then again, im sure the fellows at bungie havent a clue who is voicing anybody in the halo anime

then again again, lou was more than just a voice actor, he was mario himself, in the flesh and everything.

Yeah I don't think he knows who the guy is. I don't think Miyamoto cares that much about Charles Martine either.

It isn't that hard to imagine he didn't know, Miyamoto doesn't even play many games nevermind watching an American show for kids.

Captain Lou was clearly an awesome fella, but even I didn't know about that since a little while ago...
