For some reason the Game Boy Advance launch really sticks out in my mind. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Nintendo was finally moving on from the original Game Boy line. Sure, we had Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Color, but Game Boy Advance represented a true leap in graphical capabilities and sound. That little, tiny bit of jealous I had had for the Game Gear at one point was now completely washed away, thanks to Nintendo's '32-bit RISC processor' wonder.
My favorite console of all-time just so happens to be the Super Nintendo, and the GBA seemed like it was going to be the ultimate portable SNES. Little did I know just how many years of heaven I would get from the GBA. Not only did it play host to hundreds of absolutely fantastic original titles, we also saw a pretty healthy collection of SNES ports. Man, I'm going to start drooling just thinking about it!
With so many titles available, it was ridiculously tough to put together a top 10 list. Once again, we've teamed up with our friends at GameDaily to get the job done. Let's see if we've managed to upset you guys this time around! I've written up blurbs for spots 5 through 1. You'll have to click over to GameDaily to see what we came up with for spots 10 through 6.
Number 5 - The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
There is something that I find absolutely magical about The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. I often think of it as the portable brother of Majora's Mask, in a sense that this Zelda title provides a feeling and atmosphere unlike any other portable Zelda. To this very day, just thinking of some of the game's locations and music really gives me goosebumps. I'm pretty sure that's the sign of a good game.
Capcom/Flagship and Nintendo created quite a unique approach to the Zelda series with this title. Playing on the idea of a portable Zelda, you now found yourself playing as a version of Link that was smaller than ever before. Rocks and paths that you'd travel down as normal-sized Link were turned into dungeons and treacherous caves, thanks to the incredible shrinking mechanic. On top of all that, Link's iconic cap actually worked alongside you on this quest. It was strange...it was different...and it was a truly memorable adventure.
Number 4 - Metroid : Zero Mision
Metroid: Zero Mission absolutely blew me away when I first got my hands on it. Nintendo was very open about the title, letting gamers know that this was a remake of the original Metroid. Even for a fan of the series like myself, I found it hard to see the original Metroid through the beauty and upgrades that this remake received. This is a picture-perfect example of how to remake a title, and have it come out better for the work.
Metroid: Zero Mission took the best parts of all Metroid titles up to that point, and crammed them into our GBAs. Seeing the original Metroid redone with beautiful 2d art and a revamped soundtrack really brought the game alive like never before. One of Nintendo's most important NES titles had now taken us deeper into the myths and lore of the Metroid universe. Best of all, we get to experience an all-new ending gameplay segment that lets us control Zero Suit Samus. The last 45 minutes of that game may very well be my favorite ending portion of any Nintendo title.
It's hard to say anything bad about the Advance Wars series. Advance Wars is one of the msot addictive franchises that Nintendo has ever created. Even for someone like myself, who just so happens to dislike RPG and strategy titles, even I can't resist the allure of Advance Wars. That's why back in the day, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising was the first Advance Wars game that I picked up.
At the time, there were some complaints that Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising was a little too similar to the original GBA outing. As the years went on, people really started to enjoy the subtle differences between the two titles. What may have seemed like tiny changes at the time have now lead the way to the major revolutions that the series has seen in subsequent releases. None of that could have happened without Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, a title that is still played quite heavily to this day.
Number 2 - WarioWare Twisted
This, my friends, may very well be the crowning achievement of the WarioWare series. It's funny to think about it, but the technology in WarioWare Twisted still blows my mind to this day. The tons of mini-games based on tilting and twisting your GBA made for some of the most unique and laugh-out-loud moments in the WarioWare series. That's saying a lot for a franchise that's definitely out-there!
I'd say that the sensation of the twisting in WarioWare Twisted is worth a top spot on this list alone. Holding that game in your hand, you could feel every little movement that you were making. This cartridge really made you feel like you were in complete control. It was another example of motion control before motion control was big! Someday I hope to see WarioWare return to the Twisted format. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best entry in the entire franchise. One of the few GBA games I've kept to this day!
Number 1 - Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
What can you say about Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga? This is the RPG title that kicked off an entire portable series...one that continues to this day. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is the RPG for people that hate RPGs. What lower level of entry do you need?! It's completely user-friendly at first, it throws in tons of real-time mechanics, and it features some of gaming's most infamous characters. All those elements combined made it one of the most-haves for the GBA.
The real magic started when you actually made your way through the game. I remember being blown away by just how good the story was, with a level of writing that you don't see in most games. Damnit, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is a funny game! It's this humor that sets the title far apart from other RPGs, even ones that exist today. Combine the belly laughs with a mix-match of RPG elements from all different genres, and you come out with something truly unique. Without a doubt, my favorite franchise on any portable platform.

Story Feedback
@Choccy
That's mean. Those two games are great.
"bloody terrible taste in games"
The same can be said to you. That's what opinions are....
I think that one was more amazing than zero mission, specially since that one was a new original one!!!! not a rehashed version!!!
Also, i think circle of the moon is way better than aria of sorrow. Though i loved its weapon system
1. Legend Of Zelda: A Link to the Past(SNES port with first multiplayer Zelda)
2. Golden Sun
3. Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
4. Golden Sun: The Lost Age
5. Pokemon Sapphire
6. Pokemon Leaf Green(Remake of Game Boy game)
7. Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town(Despite the English errors)
8. Pokemon Emerald(Almost identical to Pokemon Sapphire)
9. International Yu-Gi-Oh game(Really searching now)
10. Star Wars Episode II: The New Droid Army(Eww...)
Haven't finished Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Pokemon Dungeon, or Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Skipped Final Fantasy IV Advance, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, for the DS versions. Played the Legend of Zelda NES, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, on the Virtual Console. Played Super Mario Bros. on the Game Boy Color. Played Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc on the Gamecube.
What? I can say there shouldn't be a Wii top list because of so many ports (let's count Virtual console as ports as it gets the numbers across)
The fact there is a top 10 list I'm looking at going "but what about *list of 15 games that are not SNES ports*" says it all really. I'd hope the GBA is all SNES ports could die in the same corner as Nintendo r teh kiddy and will be bankrupt in 12 months, tops.
To keep things quick, my list would have Mother 3, Rhythm Tengoku and Fire Emblem for sure don't know what I'd get rid of to make room.
No Fire Emblem?!
No Fire Emblem?!
No Fire Emblem!?!
NO FIRE EMBLEM?!?!
NOOOOOOO FIRE EMBLEM!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!
And holy f*ck on a f*ck sandwich, as Starwolf_UK reminded me there's no Mother 3 either. But at least that one has somewhat of an excuse for not being as recognized.
Also, Sonic Advance is just wasting space on this list. There are plenty of better games that were not mentioned on the list. There was one in particular I had in mind, but I can't seem to remember what it was now. Hmm, it's on the tip of my tongue...
Here's my personal list:
10. Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen
9. Wario Ware: Mega Microgames
8. Metroid Zero Mission
7. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
6. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
5. Metroid Fusion
4. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
3. Golden Sun / The Lost Age
2. Fire Emblem
1. Mother 3
(Ports were excluded, full remakes were not)
Yeah, the list fails on that alone.
Super Star Saga was okay I think. I don't care about it as much as others do, but I particularly remember one very addicting minigame, where you had to line up colored barrels. I'd probably download a beefed up DSiWare-version of that, day one.
I dare to go against the flow when it comes to Sonic Advance, though. While it did bring the series "back on track", I found the game to be terribly short even for a Sonic game, with lame leveldesign and plagued by the GBA's small display. First game I ever sold. All the GBA-Sonic games may be okay-ish for the fans, but I'd never put them on a Top-list.
Finally I loled at but also agreed with the lack of Pokémon games. Somehow the GBA-generation doesn't strike me as memorable as the GB(C) and DS entries.
...almost the end. You see, I've been stuck on the final boss fight for a very long time. I'm disappointed that I was never able to finish it.
Also, Zero Mission and Drill Dozer were beautiful. I don't know if I'd place Sonic Advance on this list, at least compared to other entries. But hey, it's your opinion, and it's definitely a list of great games.
Same here not that big on handheld gaming
I loved Fusion, and while it was much harder than Zero Mission, it was too linear, and not in the sense of just you go here and here in a specific order... but in the sense that the game TOLD YOU where to go.
While it was better at storytelling, I feel it did it all wrong when it came to playing the game.
And the final boss was underwhelming, but I loved fighting SA-X.
Though it should probably be on the list, though I don't think *over* MZM.
MEANWHILE~
- Golden Sun is far too low.
- The Minish Cap is definitely the GBA Majora's Mask, but it's nowhere near Majora's Mask's level. Though I am excited to see it on here.
- Zero Mission is a great game.
- Lack of Pokemon FRLG.
- I'm not a fan of Fire Emblem, but I am surprised to not see at least one on here.
- Mother 3; lol (but on the same hand, that would make Mother 1+2 a candidate)
- Also surprised at not at least one Megaman game, though my list may not contain it.
@Yarbskoo
I wouldn't really consider ALttP a GBA game, because unlike FireRed/LeafGreen or Zero Mission, ALttP is a straight up port with a tacked on multi-player. *shrugs*
And Emerald is way too similar to Sapphire. You're better off just putting them all as one game, or just using Emerald.
I thought that Fusion was the weakest game in the series. It was still very well made, but having someone talk to you and automap each stage of the mission changed the feeling of the game. Instead of the isolation and exploration that I want from Metroid, it became "just another action game" that was worth playing but not memorable or special.
On the other hand, Zero Mission took everything good about the original and improved it with tons of secrets and hidden passages, new mini-bosses and enemies, and a massive ending sequence that is completely new and different. This is clearly more than a simple remake - and to prove that point they include the orginal NES game as an unlockable after you complete Zero Mission. It totally blew me away by delivering more than was promised.
So to everyone who says that Fusion is the better game: why not write a paragraph explaining to the rest of us why you feel that way?
Aside from that i agree with this list
first, Tendonin already brought this up but, WHERE THE MOTHER ^(%)&*(%**() IS FIRE EMBLEM???!?!?!?!?!?
Warioware twisted is by far the most overrated game on any handheld system and the first Mario and Luigi wasnt that amazing (Bowser's inside story is though). I'd take those 2 out and put FIRE EMBLEM, and probably Pokemon FRLG
at least Golden Sun is on the list, but that game needs to be in the top 1 for the list to have any justice.
so at the end of the day, this list fails hard. real hard.
Oh well, I know RMC doesn't like RPGs.
I'm thinking Top 10 GCN games are next?
Those two games are great. However, the GBA was full with more than awesome games.
Yeah, the only reason ALttP is on there, is that it was the first time I played A Link to the Past, and I greatly enjoyed the portability. Remember, this is a list of my favorites, not of the games that are necessarily the best on the platform. Also, I had the pokemon games separate because I was having trouble remembering games to put on the list. :\
I personally would take Sonic Advance 2 over Sonic Advance. Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen should also be on here. Mother 3 really deserves to be in the top five, but I can understand why it isn't as RMC hasn't really gotten around to playing it yet.
I've never played Fire Emblem, but I'm surprised at the lack of it.
Sadly, it is indeed a very rude/jerkish comment section. D:
What's worse is that I have yet to find one "TOP WHATEVER LIST" on any site where the majority of the comments aren't "ZOMGoodness, THIS LIST IS TEH SUXORZ, LOLOLOLOL FAIIIIL" Kinda pathetic, really. D:
Fro~
I don't think Mother 3 should be on there since it hasn't been published OFFICIALLY in English or any other language other than Japanese. Fan translations don't count since they're just that, FAN translations. Might as well include Roy's Fire Emblem game while you're at it (it never got released here, but we got the prequel simply as "Fire Emblem").
I wouldn't bother with them Eternal Rain. They all seem to conveniently forget that Mother / Earthbound bombed in the west and thus still haven't accepted that it wouldn't be a good business deal for Nintendo to revisit it, like, a decade later.
It's like if people moaned about the Wii's visual and online capabilities three years after the fact [when the PS360 are that-a way]...
Oh wait.
What the hell does the quality of the game have to do with the sales it would potentially have? It's an excellent game and, thus, it belongs on the list, fan translation or not.
The fan translation of the game is the exact same thing as the game itself. It's a stupid thing to say that they don't count, when GASP....it's the same game only in English! Crazy, I know.
Overall the list is decent. I like almost all of the games on this list. If I had it my way though, Golden Sun would be number one.
Besides that, I don't really care.
@Artistic_Anarchy
It should be obvious that they aren't including games that never came out in North America on these lists.
Fans of the game are just grasping at straws so they can complain about something.
@Artistic_Anarchy
But it NEVER got released outside of Japan. Not in official form at least. We're clearly only talking about games that saw a release outside of the island nation. The matter I'M referring to is it's RETAIL availability status outside of Japan, not it's quality.
I know, I wasn't directing that comment at you. But even so, even if it wasn't released in the US officially, it shouldn't just be written off. The fan translation is widely available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection. If we're talking about the "Top 10 GBA Games", not "Top Ten GBA Games Released in the US", then Mother 3 is easily worthy of being on there.
Like I said, I understand why it ISN'T (mostly because I know RMC has said he hasn't gotten around to playing it yet) but it still should.
I'd put Megaman Zero 1 or 3 over Astroboy.
While i do agree with you on that point, i think at least one of those games deserves a spot in the top 10. Of course i do have a slight Minish Cap bias, and there are still many GBA games I've yet to discover.
Pokemon FR/LG don't deserve a spot because they're remakes. Mother 3 deserves a high spot, but there are so many other games actually released in the US that I think it's good for everyone just to know that it's great. I mean, Rhythm Tengoku probably deserved a spot on the list too but you don't see complaints about that.
Lack of Mother 3 is absolutely devastating though. Perhaps they weren't counting it because it was never released in the US?
I am disappointed by the lack of Fire Emblem on this list, but I don't take issue with any of the other games on the list. Well, except Wario Ware: Twisted. Maybe I just don't understand the whole appeal. I am intrigued enough to look into Astro Boy, though.
No Pokemon games? Considering how Pokemon and Nintendo handhelds go hand in hand (they literally sell each other), that is just criminal. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire should be on there, but the FR/LG remakes have little reason to.
While Minish Cap does kinda deserve a place there, it is far too 'typical Zelda' and short to be the Majora's Mask of the handheld Zelda games...
No Fire Emblem is shameful, especially as the handheld ones are the best recieved.
Also, a Megaman game should be on there, either Zero or Battle Network which are both underrated (although with the rate Capcom pumps them out...).
Mother 3 may also not have been released worldwide (for which Nintendo deserve all the blame for screwing the franchise over), but anyone who has actually played it can tell you it is one hell of a game. It easily deserves a place.
Still, this is all opinion.
First time I got to play through ALttP as well.
Though the *actual* list -is- "top 10", not "top 10 favorite".
But I see where you're coming from.
Heh. I don't think I'm anywhere NEAR being qualified to make a top 10 list if I can barely scrape together 10 games that are my favorites. Also, top 10 lists are always vague in their criteria. What exactly earns a game a place on the list? Units sold? Critical reviews? Pure personal opinion? So many questions...
i hate it, its the only Zelda game I didn't finish cause it was that dire and un-original
Golden Sun? Check.
Mario and Luigi? Check. AND it's number one? Double check.
Hands down my favorite GBA game. Period.
And as a bonus, it made us remember how awesome the Koopa Kids were -- I can't help but wonder if their appearance in this game helped spur their reappearance in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
I also really enjoyed Zero Mission. To date I think it's the smoothest 2D Metroid. I think Super Metroid is a better game but Zero Mission controls more fluidly and plays more smoothly.
Minish Cap was good -- what I played of it.
I would have had Sonic Advance 2 rather than 1.
I actually would've included Mario Kart: Super Circuit, as well. Really loved that one, was a great portable game, looked amazing for its day, and combined the N64 and SNES MK's wonderfully, not to mention including all of the tracks from the SNES original as a bonus.
Have to agree that a Fire Emblem would be a good addition, and the GBA Pokemon games, while taking AWAY some of the new features in Gold and Silver, were still very well done.
